    Carolingian biblical exegesis presents itself as a synthesis of exegetical and theological patristic tradition in order to make it affordable to the Christians of that time. The result of that process are interpretations of biblical texts that can be considered new, though based on the texts of the Fathers. Among them it is possible to find images of the Church containing ideas about power or how to govern and to order society. This paper studies Haimo of Auxerre’s commentary on I Cor 12, 12 et seq in order to establish the author’s concept of ’body of Christ’, in the context of the Eucharistic controversy of the ninth century.     First-principles study of lithium-doped carbon clathrates under pressure

    We present a theoretical study on the behavior under pressure of the two hypothetical C46_{46} and Li8_8C46_{46} type-I carbon clathrates in order to bring new informations concerning their synthesis. Using \textit{ab initio} calculations, we have explored the energetic and structural properties under pressure of these two carbon based cage-like materials. These low-density meta-stable phases show large negative pressure transitions compared to diamond which represent a serious obstacle for their synthesis. However, we evidence that a minimum energy barrier can be reached close to 40 GPa, suggesting that the synthesis of the Li-clathrate under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature may be possible. Electronic band structure with related density of states behavior under pressure as well as the dependence of the active Raman modes with pressure are also examined

    Municipal point source pollution in the Hackensack Meadowlands estuary

    A study was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of various sewage treatment facilities in the Hackensack Meadowlands District. The study dealt with overall plant efficiencies based on percent removals of suspended solids and Biochemical Oxygen Demand although other parameters were also included. Samples for this study were obtained from the inlet and outlet channels of the individual plants. The parameters studied were: Suspended Solids, Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Total Nitrogen, Nitrate-Nitrite Compounds, Total Organic Carbon, Orthophosphate-P, Total Oxygen Demand and Fecal Coliform. Results obtained were averaged so as to collectively represent wet and dry weather conditions. The results indicate that most of the treatment plants in the Hackensack Meadowlands District are out-dated and insufficiently equipped to handle the complex constituents of the municipal and industrial influents. Therefore, according to the results, it is necessary to up-grade these plants in order to sufficiently treat these discharges and meet federal, state and local ordinances. A number of recommendations are offered with accompanying modified flow diagrams illustrating an up-graded treatment plant

    ALMA 690 GHz observations of IRAS 16293-2422B: Infall in a highly optically-thick disk

    We present sensitive, high angular resolution (\sim 0.2 arcsec) submillimeter continuum and line observations of IRAS 16293-2422B made with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). The 0.45 mm continuum observations reveal a single and very compact source associated with IRAS 16293-2422B. This submillimeter source has a deconvolved angular size of about 400 {\it milli-arcseconds} (50 AU), and does not show any inner structure inside of this diameter. The H13^{13}CN, HC15^{15}N, and CH3_{3}OH line emission regions are about twice as large as the continuum emission and reveal a pronounced inner depression or "hole" with a size comparable to that estimated for the submillimeter continuum. We suggest that the presence of this inner depression and the fact that we do not see inner structure (or a flat structure) in the continuum is produced by very optically thick dust located in the innermost parts of IRAS 16293-2422B. All three lines also show pronounced inverse P-Cygni profiles with infall and dispersion velocities larger than those recently reported from observations at lower frequencies, suggesting that we are detecting faster, and more turbulent gas located closer to the central object. Finally, we report a small east-west velocity gradient in IRAS 16293-2422B that suggests that its disk plane is likely located very close to the plane of the sky.Comment: Accepted to ApJ

    Self–sealing hot isostatic pressing–diffusion bonding of titanium for near net shape manufacture

    Diffusion bonding is a manufacturing process that has been largely used in industry in a variety of sectors and applications (casting, fan blades manufacturing, nuclear reactors components fabrication, etc.). The process is performed in a hot isostatic press (HIP) and requires encapsulation of the components to generate vacuum and stability in the assemblies. Encapsulation is typically accomplished by a canister, which needs the same shape, geometry and complexity of the final component. In this work, a novel manufacturing process was developed to eliminate the canister and replace its performance by a “Self-Sealing” HIP-Diffusion Bonding method, which is based in a series of welding steps with laser and electron beams that create an intermediate vacuum cavity for diffusion bonding. The concept of this novel process was developed and patented at the University of Nottingham with Rolls Royce sponsorship. The research project for this MPhil study aimed to validate this technology, taking into account that joining of massive titanium sections cut from plate is an attractive alternative to manufacturing of large components by forging, as it offers a simple route to near net shaping, reducing the overall cost of assemblies and parts. A collection of different geometries was tested and all results were set as the process standard. The tensile and fatigue properties of Ti-6-4-to-Ti-6-4, Ti-624-to-Ti-6246 and Ti-6-4-to-Ti-6246 bonded parts are presented and compared with HIPed bulk Ti. The effect of surface preparation on the bond strength is also presented. Overall, little to no decrement in the strength, and only a small decrease in fatigue life is observed as a result of the bonding process. In all cases, failure was observed away from the bond line and showed high levels of plastic deformation. The novel process has been shown to provide a robust, reliable and repeatable method for bonding similar and dissimilar Ti plates
