Quantum-path signatures in attosecond helical beams driven by optical vortices
High-order harmonic generation (HHG) driven by beams carrying orbital angular momentum has
been recently demonstrated as a unique process to generate spatio-temporal coherent extreme
ultraviolet (XUV)/x-ray radiation with attosecond helical structure.Weexplore the details of the
mapping of the driving vortex to its harmonic spectrum. In particular we show that the geometry of
the harmonic vortices is complex, arising from the superposition of the contribution from the short
and long quantum paths responsible of HHG. Transversal phase-matching and quantum path
interferences provide an explanation of the dramatic changes in theXUVvortex structure generated at
different relative positions of the target respect to the laser beam focus. Finally, we show how to take
advantage of transversal phase-matching to select helical attosecond beams generated from short or
long quantum paths, exhibiting positive or negative temporal chirp respectively.CH-G acknowledges fruitful discussions with Mette B Gaarde and support from the Marie Curie International

Feeding Ecology of Juvenile Spiny Lobster, Panulirus interruptus, on the Pacific Coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico
Many aspects of the early life history of the red lobster Panulirus interruptus are little known, including the relationship between habitat structure, food resource availability, and nutrition of juveniles. We investigated the spatial and temporal differences in food intake, diet composition, and nutritional condition of juveniles at two sites along the Pacific coast of the Baja California Peninsula (Mexico) with contrasting oceanographic and biological conditions. One site (Arvin) is located inside a protected bay, Bahia Tortugas, where the waters are cooler and temperate seagrasses and macroalgae are the dominant benthic flora. The second site (Queen) in Bahia Sebastian Vizcaino was located along a more open coastline where seawater temperatures were higher and the benthic flora more indicative of warmer seas. At both sites, we randomly sampled epifauna within vegetated habitats to estimate the seasonal availability of food resources for juvenile lobsters from autumn 2001 until summer 2002. Concurrently, we used traps to sample P. interruptus juveniles for stomach content analysis. At both sites, Amphipoda, Gastropoda, and Polychaeta dominated the epifauna assemblages, as determined by an Index of Importance. Juvenile P. interruptus primarily consumed crustaceans (mostly amphipods and isopods) and vegetal material (surf-grass Phyllospadix spp. and calcareous algae), but their food spectrum was wide. Manly\u27s Index of Resource Selection indicated that lobsters preferred some prey (e.g., Brachyurans) over others despite their low Index of Importance. Despite marked differences in the types of food and their availability between sites, there were no significant differences in the nutritional condition (e.g., relative weight of the digestive gland) of lobsters at the two sites. However, the nutritional condition of lobsters was effected during some seasons. In particular, their condition deteriorated during the spring (April 2002) at Arvin, as did the proportion of individuals with empty stomachs. This study shows the feeding adaptation capacity of the juvenile California spiny lobster P. interruptus to different environmental conditions prevalent in Centre Baja California Peninsula
Vibrational quenching of CO2(010) by collisions with O(3P) at thermal energies: A quantum-mechanical study
10 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, 1 appendix.-- PACS nrs.: 34.50.Ez; 33.20.Tp; 33.15.Mt; 31.15.Ar.The CO2(010)–O(3P) vibrational energy transfer (VET) efficiency is a key input to aeronomical models of the energy budget of the upper atmospheres of Earth, Venus, and Mars. This work addresses the physical mechanisms responsible for the high efficiency of the VET process at the thermal energies existing in the terrestrial upper atmosphere (150 K ≤ T ≤ 550 K). We present a quantum-mechanical study of the process within a reduced-dimensionality approach. In this model, all the particles remain along a plane and the O(3P) atom collides along the C(2v) symmetry axis of CO2, which can present bending oscillations around the linear arrangement, while the stretching C–O coordinates are kept fixed at their equilibrium values. Two kinds of scattering calculations are performed on high-quality ab initio potential energy surfaces (PESs). In the first approach, the calculations are carried out separately for each one of the three PESs correlating to O(3P). In the second approach, nonadiabatic effects induced by spin-orbit couplings (SOC) are also accounted for. The results presented here provide an explanation to some of the questions raised by the experiments and aeronomical observations. At thermal energies, nonadiabatic transitions induced by SOC play a key role in causing large VET efficiencies, the process being highly sensitive to the initial fine-structure level of oxygen. At higher energies, the two above-mentioned approaches tend to coincide towards an impulsive Landau-Teller mechanism of the vibrational to translational (V-T) energy transfer. This work has been partially supported by the European Project No. R113-2003-506079 and the DGICYT Spanish Grant Nos. Trains of attosecond pulses structured with time-ordered polarization states
[EN]Ultrafast laser pulses generated at the attosecond timescale represent a unique tool to explore the fastest dynamics in matter. An accurate control of their properties, such as polarization, is fundamental to shape three-dimensional laser-driven dynamics. We introduce a technique to generate attosecond pulse trains whose polarization state varies from pulse to pulse. This is accomplished by driving high-harmonic generation with two time-delayed bichromatic counter-rotating fields with proper orbital angular momentum (OAM) content. Our simulations show that the evolution of the polarization state along the train can be controlled via OAM, pulse duration, and time delay of the driving fields. We, thus, introduce an additional control into structured attosecond pulses that provides an alternative route to explore ultrafast dynamics with potential applications in chiral and magnetic materials.Junta de Castilla y León (SA287P18); FEDER funds; Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (FIS2016-75652-P, RYC-2017-22745, PID2019-106910GBI00); Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte (FPU16/02591); EuropeanResearch Council (ERC) (851201); Barcelona Supercomputing Center (FI-2019-1-0013)
