Taxes on the income of ecclesiastics: the subsidio and the excusado (Sevilla Diocese, around the middle of the 17th century)
vista econ贸mico y contable. From the 16th century onwards the ecclesiastics and incumbents of tithes, noble people included, had to
pay two direct taxes, the subsidio and the excusado which levied on their annual income. These taxes were
bestowed by the Pope on the King of Spain. This paper aims to explain the functioning of these taxes on a
national level and their distributing among all Spanish dioceses. Special attention is devoted to their concrete
management in the Sevillian archbishopric around the middle of the 17th century from an economic and
accounting perspective
Thanks to the advanced state of research about the history of accounting, we can exactly
date the moment in which the present accounting methods were first used. However, there
are few studies focusing on the reasons to choose a specific accounting method to manage
an institution. This study reviews those reasons in an ecclesiastical institution, the Cathedral
Council of Seville. In the 17th century, when double entry was widely used in town and throughout the country, we can see how the Cathedral Council used instead versions of the
single entry method. This paper addresses the cases in which the different methods were
used. We think that there is a good correspondence between the method chosen and the
economic reality managed
The central accounting office of the cathedral council of Sevilla in the modern era: management and verification
Since the last third of 16th and the 17th Centuries the Cathedral Council of Sevilla created an
accounting office to manage the most of the task of coordination and supervision of its administrative system. It
also managed some economic and accounting tools of the organization. Before the own Council made these tasks
through the meetings of their members, but during this period these task were delegated to this office. In this
article, from the analysis of the books kept in the Cathedral of Seville Archive, we describe this central
accounting office and analyse its functions
The Santa Marta Hospital of Seville: activities and economic management (15th until 18th centuries)
During more than four centuries the Santa Marta Hospital of Seville developed
the aim of his founder in 1404: give food to the poor. For this the Hospital
rented their properties and could achieve its targets. All the economic process was
supervised by the Cathedral Council of Seville. In this article the activities of this
entity are analyzed through its accounting books

Tithe and the Cathedrals of Spain and England at the end of the Middle Ages
algunas similitudes y tambi茅n importantes diferencias, condicionadas, sobre
This article is a comparative study of tithe collection in
Spain and England at the end of the middle ages, based on the archives of
the Cathedral Chapter of Seville and Durham Priory. A number of similarities
are observable in the two systems but there are also important differences,
especially concerning the recipients of tithe: in the English case, tithes were
owed to the parish priest, but in the Spanish they were shared by the Crown,
the bishop and the cathedral chapter (as manager of the tithe)
