    Spectral localization for semimetals and Callias operators

    A semiclassical argument is used to show that the low-lying spectrum of a selfadjoint operator, the so-called spectral localizer, determines the number of Dirac or Weyl points of an ideal semimetal. Apart from the IMS localization procedure, an explicit computation for the local toy models given by a Dirac or Weyl point is the key element of proof. The argument has numerous similarities to Witten's reasoning leading to the strong Morse inequalities. The same techniques allow to prove a spectral localization for the Callias operator in terms of a multi-parameter spectral flow of selfadjoint Fredholm operators

    Doubly Differential Electron-Emission Spectra in Single and Multiple Ionization of Noble-Gas Atoms by Fast Highly-Charged-Ion Impact

    Low-energy electron emission spectra are studied in collisions of 3.6 MeV/amu Au53+ ions with neon and argon atoms for well-defined degrees of target ionization. We calculate doubly differential cross sections as functions of the recoil-ion charge state in the continuum-distorted-wave with eikonal initial-state approximation using a binomial analysis of the total and differential ionization probabilities, and compare them with the present and with previously published experimental data. Very good agreement is found for the single-ionization spectra and for double ionization of neon, while some discrepancies are observed in the spectra for double and triple ionization of argon

    A spiking and adapting tactile sensor for neuromorphic applications

    The ongoing research on and development of increasingly intelligent artificial systems propels the need for bio inspired pressure sensitive spiking circuits. Here we present an adapting and spiking tactile sensor, based on a neuronal model and a piezoelectric field-effect transistor (PiezoFET). The piezoelectric sensor device consists of a metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor comprising a piezoelectric aluminium-scandium-nitride (AlxSc1-xN) layer inside of the gate stack. The so augmented device is sensitive to mechanical stress. In combination with an analogue circuit, this sensor unit is capable of encoding the mechanical quantity into a series of spikes with an ongoing adaptation of the output frequency. This allows for a broad application in the context of robotic and neuromorphic systems, since it enables said systems to receive information from the surrounding environment and provide encoded spike trains for neuromorphic hardware.     Dose-dependent effects of dietary xylooligosaccharides supplementation on microbiota, fermentation and metabolism in healthy adult cats

    In order to investigate the effect and appropriate dose of prebiotics, this study evaluated the effect of two levels of xylooligosaccharides (XOS) in cats. Twenty-four healthy adult cats were divided into three groups: no-XOS control diet with 1% cellulose; low XOS supplementation (LXOS) with 0.04% XOS and 0.96% cellulose; and high XOS supplementation (HXOS) with 0.40% XOS and 0.60% cellulose. Both XOS groups increased blood 3-hydroxybutyryl carnitine levels and decreased hexadecanedioyl carnitine levels. Both XOS treatments displayed an increased bacterial abundance of Blautia, Clostridium XI, and Collinsella and a decreased abundance of Megasphaera and Bifidobacterium. LXOS groups increased fecal pH and bacterial abundance of Streptococcus and Lactobacillus, decreased blood glutaryl carnitine concentration, and Catenibacterium abundance. HXOS group showed a more distinct microbiome profile and higher species richness, and an increased bacterial abundance of Subdoligranulum, Ruminococcaceae genus (unassigned genus), Erysipelotrichaceae genus, and Lachnospiraceae. Correlations between bacterial abundances and blood and fecal parameters were also observed. In conclusion, XOS could benefit feline gut health by altering microbiota; its effects dependant on the dose. The higher-dose XOS increased bacterial populations that possibly promoted intestinal fermentation, while the lower dose altered populations of carbohydrate-metabolic microbiota and possibly modulated host metabolism. Die Studierenden entwickelten in Einzelarbeit oder als Zweierteam Konferenzbeiträge zu folgenden Themen: - Spannendes aus dem Bereich der Energieerzeugung und der Grauen Energie - Aspekte der Kreislaufwirtschaft - Ökosysteme - ihre Belastung und Erhalt - Spezifische Wirtschaftszweige und Nachhaltigkeit Die Ergebnisse der studentischen Fachkonferenz zur „Nachhaltigkeit im industriellen Umfeld“ werden in der vorliegenden Publikation präsentiert

    Associations of changes in physical activity and sedentary time with weight recurrence after bariatric surgery: a 5-year prospective study

    Background Increasing physical activity and limiting sedentary time may minimize weight recurrence after bariatric surgery. However, few studies have evaluated potential associations of objectively-measured physical activity and sedentary time with post-surgical weight recurrence over time. Aims To evaluate associations of change in physical activity and sedentary time with weight recurrence after bariatric surgery. Methods Participants from the Oslo Bariatric Surgery Study, a prospective cohort study, wore an ActiGraph monitor for seven days at 1- and 5 years after surgery to assess daily physical activity and sedentary time. Participants’ weight was measured at in-person clinic visits. Chi-square Test and Paired-samples T-test evaluated group differences and change over time, while Pearson’s Correlation, multiple logistic and linear regression investigated associations between variables. Results Five years after surgery 79 participants (70.5% response rate, 81% female) (mean (sd) age: 54.0 (±9.3), BMI: 32.1 (±4.7)) had valid monitor data. Participants increased their sedentary time (71.4 minutes/day (95% CI: 54.2–88.6, p = <0.001)) and reduced daily steps (−1411.1 (95% CI: 737.8–208.4), p = <0.001), light physical activity (−54.1 min/day (95% CI: 40.9–67.2, p = <0.001)), and total physical activity (−48.2 (95% CI: 34.6–63.3), p = <0.001) from 1- to 5 years after surgery. No change was found for moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity. No associations were found between changes in steps, physical activity or sedentary time and weight recurrence. Conclusion Participants increased sedentary time and decreased light- and total physical activity between 1- and 5 years post-surgery. Overall, changes in physical activity and sedentary time were not associated with weight recurrence. Interventions to help patients increase physical activity and limit sedentary time after bariatric surgery are needed.publishedVersio
