Quantum cost for sending entanglement
Establishing quantum entanglement between two distant parties is an essential
step of many protocols in quantum information processing. One possibility for
providing long-distance entanglement is to create an entangled composite state
within a lab and then physically send one subsystem to a distant lab. However,
is this the "cheapest" way? Here, we investigate the minimal "cost" that is
necessary for establishing a certain amount of entanglement between two distant
parties. We prove that this cost is intrinsically quantum, and is specified by
quantum correlations. Our results provide an optimal protocol for entanglement
distribution and show that quantum correlations are the essential resource for

Easy implementable algorithm for the geometric measure of entanglement
We present an easy implementable algorithm for approximating the geometric
measure of entanglement from above. The algorithm can be applied to any
multipartite mixed state. It involves only the solution of an eigenproblem and
finding a singular value decomposition, no further numerical techniques are
needed. To provide examples, the algorithm was applied to the isotropic states
of 3 qubits and the 3-qubit XX model with external magnetic field.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Linking a distance measure of entanglement to its convex roof
An important problem in quantum information theory is the quantification of
entanglement in multipartite mixed quantum states. In this work, a connection
between the geometric measure of entanglement and a distance measure of
entanglement is established. We present a new expression for the geometric
measure of entanglement in terms of the maximal fidelity with a separable
state. A direct application of this result provides a closed expression for the
Bures measure of entanglement of two qubits. We also prove that the number of
elements in an optimal decomposition w.r.t. the geometric measure of
entanglement is bounded from above by the Caratheodory bound, and we find
necessary conditions for the structure of an optimal decomposition.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Efficient generation of neural stem cell-like cells from adult human bone marrow stromal cells
Clonogenic neural stem cells (NSCs) are self-renewing cells that maintain the capacity to differentiate into brain-specific cell types, and may also replace or repair diseased brain tissue. NSCs can be directly isolated from fetal or adult nervous tissue, or derived from embryonic stem cells. Here, we describe the efficient conversion of human adult bone marrow stromal cells (hMSC) into a neural stem cell-like population (hmNSC, for human marrow-derived NSC-like cells). These cells grow in neurosphere-like structures, express high levels of early neuroectodermal markers, such as the proneural genes NeuroD1, Neurog2, MSl1 as well as otx1 and nestin, but lose the characteristics of mesodermal stromal cells. In the presence of selected growth factors, hmNSCs can be differentiated into the three main neural phenotypes: astroglia, oligodendroglia and neurons. Clonal analysis demonstrates that individual hmNSCs are multipotent and retain the capacity to generate both glia and neurons. Our cell culture system provides a powerful tool for investigating the molecular mechanisms of neural differentiation in adult human NSCs. hmNSCs may therefore ultimately help to treat acute and chronic neurodegenerative diseases
Comparing teacher roles in Denmark and England
This article reports the findings of a comparative study of teaching in Denmark and England; its broader aim is to help develop an approach for comparing pedagogy. Lesson observations and interviews identified the range of goals towards which teachers in each country worked and the actions these prompted. These were clustered using the lens of Bernstein’s pedagogic discourse (1990; 1996) to construct teacher roles which provided a view of pedagogy. Through this approach we have begun to identify variations in pedagogy across two countries. All teachers in this study adopted a variety of roles; of significance was the ease with which competent English teachers moved between roles. The English teachers observed adopted roles consistent with a wider techno-rationalist discourse. There was a greater subject emphasis by Danish teachers whose work was set predominantly within a democratic humanist discourse, whilst the English teachers placed a greater emphasis on applied skills
Fragmentation of Molecules by Fast Ion Impact
Single ionization of simple molecules, e.g. H2, CO2, by fast charged particle impact has been studied using a reaction microscope. By measuring the momenta of the emitted electron and the recoil ionic fragment in coincidence, channel-selective low-energy electron spectra have been recorded. The experimental cross sections will be presented, compared with the predictions of state-of-the-art CDW-EIS calculations and discussed in terms of molecular effects such as (i) autoionization and predissociation channels, (ii) interference patterns resulting from the two-center geometry of the diatomic molecule, in analogy to Young\u27s double-slit experiment and (iii) dependence of the electron emission on the orientation of the molecular axis
(B-L) Symmetry vs. Neutrino Seesaw
We compute the effective coupling of the Majoron to W bosons at \cO(\hbar)
by evaluating the matrix element of the (B-L) current between the vacuum and a
state. The (B-L) anomaly vanishes, but the amplitude does not vanish
as a result of a UV finite and non-local contribution which is entirely due to
the mixing between left-chiral and right-chiral neutrinos. The result shows how
anomaly-like couplings may arise in spite of the fact that the (B-L) current
remains exactly conserved to all orders in , lending additional support

Entanglement of a Single Spin-1 Object: An Example of Ubiquitous Entanglement
Using a single spin-1 object as an example, we discuss a recent approach to
quantum entanglement. The key idea of the approach consists in presetting of
basic observables in the very definition of quantum system. Specification of
basic observables defines the dynamic symmetry of the system. Entangled states
of the system are then interpreted as states with maximal amount of uncertainty
of all basic observables. The approach gives purely physical picture of
entanglement. In particular, it separates principle physical properties of
entanglement from inessential. Within the model example under consideration, we
show relativity of entanglement with respect to dynamic symmetry and argue
existence of single-particle entanglement. A number of physical examples are

COVID-19: a fatal case of acute liver failure associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in pre-existing liver cirrhosis
Background: The detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is challenging, particularly in post-mortem human tissues. However, there is increasing evidence for viral SARS-CoV-2 manifestation in non-respiratory tissues. In this context, it is a current matter of debate, whether SARS-CoV-2 shows hepatotropism.
Case presentation: Here, we report a case of an 88-year-old women with massive SARS-CoV-2 viremia, severe jaundice and clinical signs of an acute hepatitis, who died within a few days from an acute liver failure without showing any clinical signs of pneumonia. Autopsy revealed a severe chronic and acute liver damage with bile duct infestation by SARS-CoV-2 that was accompanied by higher expressions of angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2), Cathepsin L and transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2).
Conclusion: Our findings indicate an enhanced biliary susceptibility to viral infection with SARS-CoV-2, that might have resulted from pre-existing severe liver damage. Furthermore, our findings emphasize the differential diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated liver failure in the clinical setting of an inexplicable jaundice
