    Drug Management Reviews in District Drug Management Unit and General Hospital

    Drug is one of the essential elements in healthcare that should be effectively and efficiently managed. Following the decentralization in 2001 in Indonesia, drug management has changed in district drug management units and also in District General Hospitals. Certainly this condition influences the sustainability of drug access in primary health care such as in Community Health Center and District General Hospital, especially in drug financing policy. A cross sectional descriptive study to obtain information on drug management in public healthcare in district had been carried out between July and December 2006 in 10 District Public Drug Management Units from 10 district health offices and 9 district general hospitals as samples. Data were collected by interviewing heads of Drug Section in District Health Offices and heads of Hospital Pharmacies using structured questionnaires and observing drug storage in District Drug Management Units, Community Health Centers, and Hospital Pharmacies. Results of the study show that drug planning in District Health Offices and General Hospitals did not meet the basic real need in some districts nor District Hospitals. The minimum health service standards had not been achieved yet. Furthermore, drug procurement, storage and recording as well as reporting was not good enough either, such as shown by the existence of expired drugs. Lead time for drug delivery to community health centers in some districts was longer than the average of lead time in the past 3 years

    Crosstalk between mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) and hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) is essential for hematopoietic homeostasis and lineage output. Here, we investigate how transcriptional changes in bone marrow (BM) MSCs result in long-lasting effects on HSCs. Single-cell analysis of Cxcl12-abundant reticular (CAR) cells and PDGFRα+Sca1+ (PαS) cells revealed an extensive cellular heterogeneity but uniform expression of the transcription factor gene Ebf1. Conditional deletion of Ebf1 in these MSCs altered their cellular composition, chromatin structure and gene expression profiles, including the reduced expression of adhesion-related genes. Functionally, the stromal-specific Ebf1 inactivation results in impaired adhesion of HSCs, leading to reduced quiescence and diminished myeloid output. Most notably, HSCs residing in the Ebf1-deficient niche underwent changes in their cellular composition and chromatin structure that persist in serial transplantations. Thus, genetic alterations in the BM niche lead to long-term functional changes of HSCs

    Effect of a pre-milking teat foam and a liner disinfectant on the presence of mesophilic and (proteolytic) psychrotrophic bacteria prior to milking

    Contamination of raw milk by psychrotrophs can lead to the production of heat-resistant proteases and subsequent spoilage of UHT milk. Therefore, this research communication evaluated the effect of a pre-milking teat disinfectant (active components: L-(+)-lactic acid and salicylic acid) and a liner disinfectant (active components: peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide) on the number of mesophilic and (proteolytic) psychrotrophic bacteria prior to milking. The teat orifices of 10 cows were sampled using a swabbing procedure before and after treatment with a pre-milking teat disinfectant on six subsequent days. On the teat orifices, there was a small but statistically significant decrease in the psychrotrophic bacterial counts between pre and post dipping. No differences were observed for the mesophilic bacterial counts and proteolytic active counts. Liners were also sampled using swabs pre and post disinfection. No statistically significant decrease in the bacterial counts was observed post liner disinfection, although there was a numerical decrease. Sixty-two percent of the proteolytic psychrotrophs were pseudomonads: 16.5% of which were P. fragi, 14.3% P. lundensis, 10.0% P. fluorescens and 2.9% P. putida. Trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS) analysis revealed a wide variety in proteolytic activity (from 0 to 55 mu mol glycine/ml milk) and the presence of high producers. It can be concluded that there was only a minor effect of teat and liner disinfection on the psychrotrophic bacterial counts indicating that the measures presented did not result in a reduction of the targeted bacteria on teat orifices and liners

    Range and forage research needs for red meat production in the north central region

    The 12 contiguous states of the North Central Region constitute one of the most productive agricultural areas in the world. Before the region was settled, vegetation consisted primarily of forest in the east, grasses in the west, and an intermingling of grass and forest in the central portions. Although the region contains a high proportion of productive soils, there are great differences within the region in soils, as well as in climate, vegetation, and geology. The short-grass soils in the western areas are higher in pH, lighter in color, and thinner than the tail-grass soils in the central and west-central areas, which have thick, dark surface horizons. The more strongly leached soils of the eastern humid forested areas are more acid and have thin, dark surface (A) horizons and light-colored subsurface horizons, which are mixed when cultivated. Approximately 75% of all soils in the region is derived from glacial till and loess. A large proportion of the deposits of glacial origin was derived locally from underlying bedrock or from material laid down during previous glaciations. Most of these deposits range from a few to tens of feet thick, but occasionally are several hundred feet thick. Loess deposits deeper than 4 feet cover large areas of Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. There also are extensive areas where shallow loess deposits cover the land surface

    Removing black-hole singularities with nonlinear electrodynamics

    We propose a way to remove black hole singularities by using a particular nonlinear electrodynamics Lagrangian that has been recently used in various astrophysics and cosmological frameworks. In particular, we adapt the cosmological analysis discussed in a previous work to the black hole physics. Such analysis will be improved by applying the Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation to the black hole case.     Hydrogen sulfide plasma passivation of gallium arsenide

    Improvement in the electrical properties of the GaAs surface has been accomplished using a room‐temperature hydrogen sulfide plasma. The surface has then been protected by a 300 °C plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) SiO2 film. This treatment is highly reproducible due to computer control of process parameters and long‐lasting due to the SiO2 cap. Improved C‐V characteristics were observed, showing interface trap densities in the high 1011 cm−2 eV−1 range.     A relativistic study of Bessel beams

    We present a fully relativistic analysis of Bessel beams revealing some noteworthy features that are not explicit in the standard description. It is shown that there is a reference frame in which the field takes a particularly simple form, the wave appearing to rotate in circles.
