    Kinematic analysis of spinal cord injury animals treated with a neurotrophin-infused scaffold and body weight supported treadmill training

    Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is a condition that affects around 250,000 Americans with no cure. Existing treatments rely on physical therapies such as body weight support treadmill training (BWSTT). Treatments currently being researched include the use of implantable cells and biomaterials. Our study investigated the changes in locomotive gait and range of motion via a combinational treatment using a bioengineered scaffold [poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) polyethylene glycol (PNIPAAm-g-PEG) with BDNF and NT-3] and rehabilitation training using BWSTT in a clinically relevant contusion SCI animal model. Five different groups of animals (Sham, Injury, BWSTT, Implant, and Combinational) were tested on a treadmill with BWSTT at three different BWS (75%, 65%, and 55%) and two different speeds (7 cm/s and 10 cm/s). Using three motion capture cameras, kinematic data were acquired and analyzed to study functional recovery in these groups. Our results show some kinematic recovery in the Combination therapy and BWSTT animals. Step height, length, and number of steps were significantly higher in these groups of animals. The obtained data warrant further studies that aim to investigate the efficacy of different biomaterial implants and combinational therapies

    A framework for evaluating the effectiveness of flood emergency management systems in Europe

    Calls for enhancing societal resilience to flooding are echoed across Europe alongside mounting evidence that flood risk will increase in response to climate change amongst other risk-enhancing factors. At a time where it is now widely accepted that flooding cannot be fully prevented, resilience discourse in public policy stresses the importance of improving societal capacities to absorb and recover from flood events. Flood emergency management has thus emerged as a crucial strategy in flood risk management. However, the extent to which emergency management supports societal resilience is dependent on the effectiveness of governance and performance in practice. Drawing from the extensive body of literature documenting the success conditions of so-called effective emergency management more broadly, this study formulates an evaluation framework specifically tailored to the study of Flood Emergency Management Systems (FEMS) in Europe. Applying this framework, this research performs a cross-country comparison of FEMS in the Netherlands, England, Poland, France, and Sweden. Important differences are observed in how FEMS have evolved in relation to differing contextual backgrounds (political, cultural, administrative and socio-economic) and exposures to flood hazard. Whereas the organization and coordination of actors are functioning effectively, other aspects of effective FEMS are relatively under-developed in several countries, such as provisions for institutional learning, recovery-based activities and community preparedness. Drawing from examples of good practice, this paper provides a critical reflection on the opportunities and constraints to enhancing the effectiveness of FEMS in Europe

In this research, a mobile-based point of sales information system application will be developed. The development of this application is using Laravel PHP framework and Javascript. Result from the research is that the application can show customer’s order, record reservation, order’s status in kitchen and display daily sales report

    Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorting and Quantitative Real-Time PCR to Reveal VEGF-Expressing Macrophage Populations in the Zebrafish Larvae

    The transparent, genetically tractable zebrafish is increasingly recognized as a useful model to both live image and uncover mechanistic insight into cell interactions governing tissue homeostasis, pathology, and regeneration. Here, we describe a protocol for the isolation of macrophages from zebrafish wounds using fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS), and the identification of specific pro-angiogenic macrophage populations that express high levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (vegf) using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). The cell dissociation and FACS sorting techniques have been optimized for immune cells and successfully used to isolate other fluorescently marked populations within the wound such as neutrophils and endothelial cells. More broadly, this protocol can be easily adapted to other contexts where identification of pro-angiogenic immune cells is transformative for understanding, from development to pathologies such as infection, cancer, and diabetes.</p

    Exploring, tailoring, and traversing the solution landscape of a phase-shaped CARS process

    Pulse shaping techniques are used to improve the selectivity of broadband CARS experiments, and to reject the overwhelming background. Knowledge about the fitness landscape and the capability of tailoring it is crucial for both fundamental insight and performing an efficient optimization of phase shapes. We use an evolutionary algorithm to find the optimal spectral phase of the broadband pump and probe beams in a background-suppressed shaped CARS process. We then investigate the shapes, symmetries, and topologies of the landscape contour lines around the optimal solution and also around the point corresponding to zero phase. We demonstrate the significance of the employed phase bases in achieving convex contour lines, suppressed local optima, and high optimization fitness with a few (and even a single) optimization parameter
