The Native Andean gender system : three interpretive essays

textMy dissertation addresses and responds to research and practical interventions on gender in the Andean area. In it, I argue for the native Andean gender system's pertinence as an explanatory variable of past and present gender relations. This gender arrangement's name is 'Complementarity and Parallel Lines of Descent' (CPLD) (Silverblatt, 1985; Harris, 1987; Hardman, 2005; Vieira, 2005); it holds equivalent and complementary functions for women and men inside and outside the home. CPLD prevents women's subordination and the over-valuing of men's actions and characteristics on the basis of women's independent access to vital resources and the non-separation and non-primacy of the productive/public over the reproductive/private sphere (Roel Pineda, V., 1981-83; Lajo, J. 1985-6). Three independent studies show the empirical and theoretical importance of CPLD: 1) social identity observations during socio-anthropological field work on rural-to-urban migration in Lima, Peru (Lloyd, 1981; Herencia, 1985); 2) an historical monograph on CPLD's manifestations in the Tupac Amaru II Rebellion of the 1780's (Herencia, 1999); and 3) a political sociology essay on contemporary social movements in the Andes, seen through the prism of ethnicity and gender (Herencia, 2006). The transformation of gender relations through social identity moments (Study 1) serves to propose the theoretical coexistence and evolution, in a dominant/dominated condition, of engendered Native Andean and Western capitalist socio-cultural systems. For this reason, observations of gender at any point in time should consider the relation between the two. Also hypothetically, the Andean socio-cultural system's distinctive quality may result from Andean women's unrestricted social involvement, in contrast to that in the Western patriarchal capitalist system (and others). From a native people's perspective, conserving worldview and culture in past and present times implies preserving native gender relations. CPLD manifestations are ubiquitous in the Andean socio-cultural system’s traditions, beliefs and practices. Indigenous social movements need to fend off ideological barriers that obscure this gender system's existence, consciously ratifying and honoring the gender relations that continue to sustain the social reproduction of communities in not less than half the population of Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and surrounding areas. Disseny i Implementació d'un Sistema de Comunicacions per a PocketQube basat a LoRa

We have recently been able to witness how large companies have set themselves the goal of launching fleets of hundreds or even thousands of satellites to offer different services. This new generation of satellites is marking a clear trend to reduce their size and cost. However, this also leads to increasingly demanding challenges and constraints that require innovative solutions in the design of small-size, high-capacity communications systems. The present work offers the complete process from the design, to the implementation and test of a communications system for PocketQube picosatellites. The proposed solution benefits from LoRa technology, and includes both the hardware part of the communications subsystem and software for its configuration and operation according to the defined protocol. Finally, this project has been designed and integrated, and its compatibility and cooperation with the rest of the subsystems has been tested, for the PoCAT picosatellites developed at the UPC NanoSat Lab.Recientemente hemos podido presenciar como grandes compañías se han marcado el objetivo de lanzar flotas de cientos o incluso miles de satélites para ofrecer diferentes servicios. Esta nueva generación de satelites está marcando una clara tendencia a reducir el tamaño y coste de éstos. Sin embargo, esto también conlleva retos y restricciones cada vez más exigentes que necesitan soluciones inovadoras en el diseño de sistemas de comunicaciones de tamaño reducido y alta capacidad. El presente trabajo ofrece el proceso completo desde el diseño, pasando por la implemetación y test, de un sistema de comunicaciones para picosatelites PocketQube. La solución propuesta se beneficia de la tecnología LoRa, y comprende tanto la parte de hardware del subsistema de comunicaciones, como el software para su configuración y funcionamiento según el protocolo definido. Software per l'anàlisi de sistemes de suspensió de doble triangle per quads

El projecte que es presenta en aquest document recull el disseny i la metodologia de treball d’un software per a l’anàlisi de sistemes de suspensió d’un vehicle, concretament en un vehicle tipus quad, analitzant en detall els sistemes i elements associats emprats en l’eix anterior (sistemes de doble triangle) i l’eix posterior (sistema de basculant). L’objectiu és elaborar un programa que permeti amb una ràpida inserció de les dades extreure múltiples característiques dels sistemes de suspensions per tal que l’usuari pugui jutjar el funcionament del sistema i provar nous dissenys per tal de millorar el model d’estudi. Per a cada sistema de suspensió, s’estudiaran cinc blocs temàtics. En el primer d’ells, s’estudiarà la descripció dels elements que intervenen en la suspensió, des d’un sistema de referència per cadascun que permeti una caracterització intuïtiva i una fàcil mesura. Al segon bloc, s’ensamblaran tots els elements descrits al primer bloc en la posició de repòs del vehicle, per després al tercer bloc, establir una metodologia senzilla per caracteritzar el moviment sistema. Al quart bloc, s’exposarà l’anàlisi quasi-estàtic de cada conjunt de suspensions (anàlisi de les forces que intervenen al sistema donada una configuració concreta), i per acabar, a l’últim bloc s’explicarà la metodologia d’obtenció de les cotes característiques dels sistemes de suspensions (com caiguda, convergència, angle d’avanç, etc). Per últim, es contrasta alguns dels resultats obtinguts amb aquest programa amb els resultats reals d’un model en concret dissenyat amb un programa de disseny en 3D, per tal de verificar el correcte funcionament del programa

Formalization of Complex Vectors in Higher-Order Logic

Complex vector analysis is widely used to analyze continuous systems in many disciplines, including physics and engineering. In this paper, we present a higher-order-logic formalization of the complex vector space to facilitate conducting this analysis within the sound core of a theorem prover: HOL Light. Our definition of complex vector builds upon the definitions of complex numbers and real vectors. This extension allows us to extensively benefit from the already verified theorems based on complex analysis and real vector analysis. To show the practical usefulness of our library we adopt it to formalize electromagnetic fields and to prove the law of reflection for the planar waves.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figur

La traducción de la ambigüedad de género en la literatura: el caso de Written on the Body.

The present work analyzes the difficulties resulting from the absence of gender marks in English when translating towards Spanish. To do so, the novel Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson –a masterpiece in which the identity of the leading character will be kept in strict ambiguity –would be studied taking into consideration aspects connected to the feminist and queer theories. Several extracts from both the original text and the translation by Encarna Gómez Castejón in 1988 will be exhaustively compared to evaluate the correctness and naturality of the translation. Additionally, if considered necessary, an alternative translation will be proposed.El presente trabajo analiza las dificultades que supone la ausencia de marcas de género en la lengua inglesa a la hora de realizar una traducción hacia el español. Para este fin, se empleará como objeto de estudio la novela Written on the Body de Jeanette Winterson, obra en la cual se conserva deliberadamente la identidad del personaje principal en la más estricta ambigüedad. En primer lugar, se realizará una exhaustiva comparativa de diversos extractos entre el original y la traducción realizada por Encarna Gómez Castejón en 1988 y, posteriormente, si se considerase necesario, se propondrá una traducción alternativa de los mismos. Basis for the informative treatment of drugs in mass media

Producción CientíficaThe social responsibility of the media extends to all matters it reports on, such us drug use, a widespread social phenomenon with a regular presence in the press. Therefore, this research tried, firstly, to describe the media representation of drugs and, secondly, to expose how drugs should be informatively treated in a responsible manner from a double deontological and preventive point of view. For this purpose, the scientific and informative literature on this topic was analyzed, finding that the informative treatment of drugs has been mostly criticized by those who have studied it in the last five decades. The media offers information that is sometimes sensationalist and usually not verified, since a single source, mostly institutional, tends to be used, which is easily accessible to the journalist. In addition, mass media have been accused of spreading stereotypes, an imprecise, if not mistaken, image of this phenomenon and even playing a counter- preventive role. Despite this, the important collaboration of journalists and the media has been highlighted, as these are the main source of information on drugs for the general population. The emergence of the Internet has added a new field of research on communication and drugs of multiple formats, channels and content, where the general population, youth, institutions and media professionals coexist

Modeling and Stability Analysis of Nonlinear Sampled-Data Systems with Embedded Recovery Algorithms

Computer control systems for safety critical systems are designed to be fault tolerant and reliable, however, soft errors triggered by harsh environments can affect the performance of these control systems. The soft errors of interest which occur randomly, are nondestructive and introduce a failure that lasts a random duration. To minimize the effect of these errors, safety critical systems with error recovery mechanisms are being investigated. The main goals of this dissertation are to develop modeling and analysis tools for sampled-data control systems that are implemented with such error recovery mechanisms. First, the mathematical model and the well-posedness of the stochastic model of the sampled-data system are presented. Then this mathematical model and the recovery logic are modeled as a dynamically colored Petri net (DCPN). For stability analysis, these systems are then converted into piecewise deterministic Markov processes (PDP). Using properties of a PDP and its relationship to discrete-time Markov chains, a stability theory is developed. In particular, mean square equivalence between the sampled-data and its associated discrete-time system is proved. Also conditions are given for stability in distribution to the delta Dirac measure and mean square stability for a linear sampled-data system with recovery logic

¿Consecuencias espirituales de las guerras castellanas? El interdicto de 1468 en Córdoba

Este artículo pretende mostrar un episodio muy poco conocido de la Córdoba bajomedieval: el interdicto lanzado en septiembre de 1468 y que finalizó en diciembre de ese mismo año. Pese a la parquedad de las fuentes y la práctica ausencia de información sobre este suceso, se ha pretendido abrir una línea de investigación que profundice en las consecuencias espirituales de un proceso de conflictividad política, y cómo ello pudo afectar a los habitantes de una ciudad.This paper attempts to show a moment that is not known enough about the city of Córdoba during the last years of Middle Ages: an interdict that was launched on September 1468 and finished on December of the same year. Despite the frugality that I have found in the sources and the fact that I have not found any information about this event, I have tried to open a new line of research to go in depth with the spiritual consequences of political tension, and how this process could affect city’s inhabitants
