Discreteness without symmetry breaking: a theorem
This paper concerns sprinklings into Minkowski space (Poisson processes). It
proves that there exists no equivariant measurable map from sprinklings to
spacetime directions (even locally). Therefore, if a discrete structure is
associated to a sprinkling in an intrinsic manner, then the structure will not
pick out a preferred frame, locally or globally. This implies that the
discreteness of a sprinkled causal set will not give rise to ``Lorentz
breaking'' effects like modified dispersion relations. Another consequence is
that there is no way to associate a finite-valency graph to a sprinkling

Environmental study of ERTS-1 imagery: Lake Champlain and Vermont
Environmental concerns of the State of Vermont currently being stressed include water quality in Lake Champlain and a state-wide land use and capability plan. Significant results obtained from ERTS-1 relate directly to the above concerns. Industrial water pollution and turbidity in Lake Champlain have been identified and mapped and the ERTS pollution data will be used in the developing court suit which Vermont has initiated against the polluters. ERTS imagery has also provided a foundation for updating and revising land use inventories. Major classes of land use have been identified and mapped, and substantial progress has been made toward the mapping of such land use divisions as crop and forest type, and wetlands
Spacelike distance from discrete causal order
Any discrete approach to quantum gravity must provide some prescription as to
how to deduce continuum properties from the discrete substructure. In the
causal set approach it is straightforward to deduce timelike distances, but
surprisingly difficult to extract spacelike distances, because of the unique
combination of discreteness with local Lorentz invariance in that approach. We
propose a number of methods to overcome this difficulty, one of which
reproduces the spatial distance between two points in a finite region of
Minkowski space. We provide numerical evidence that this definition can be used
to define a `spatial nearest neighbor' relation on a causal set, and conjecture
that this can be exploited to define the length of `continuous curves' in
causal sets which are approximated by curved spacetime. This provides evidence

Public perceptions of drinking water: A postal survey of residents with private water supplies
Background: In Canada, the legal responsibility for the condition of private water supplies,
including private wells and cisterns, rests with their owners. However, there are reports that
Canadians test these water supplies intermittently and that treatment of such water is uncommon.
An estimated 45% of all waterborne outbreaks in Canada involve non-municipal systems. An
understanding of the perceptions and needs of Canadians served by private water supplies is
essential, as it would enable public health professionals to better target public education and
drinking water policy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the public perceptions of private
water supplies in the City of Hamilton, Ontario (Canada), with the intent of informing public
education and outreach strategies within the population.
Methods: A cross-sectional postal survey of 246 residences with private water supplies was
conducted in May 2004. Questions pertained to the perceptions of water quality and alternative
water sources, water testing behaviours and the self-identified need for further information.
Results: Private wells, cisterns or both, were the source of household water for 71%, 16% and
13% of respondents, respectively. Although respondents rated their water quality highly, 80% also
had concerns with its safety. The most common concerns pertained to bacterial and chemical
contamination of their water supply and its potential negative effect on health. Approximately 56%
and 61% of respondents used in-home treatment devices and bottled water within their homes,
respectively, mainly due to perceived improvements in the safety and aesthetic qualities compared
to regular tap water. Testing of private water supplies was performed infrequently: 8% of
respondents tested at a frequency that meets current provincial guidelines. Two-thirds of
respondents wanted more information on various topics related to private water supplies. Flyers
and newspapers were the two media reported most likely to be used.
Conclusion: Although respondents rated their water quality highly, the majority had concerns
regarding the water from their private supply, and the use of bottled water and water treatment
devices was extensive. The results of this study suggest important lines of inquiry and provide
support and input for public education programs, particularly those related to private water testing,
in this population

Yet ballet as a masculine activity still remains a suspect phenomenon. This paper will challenge this claim in relation to Billy Elliot the Musical and its critical reception. The transformation of the visual representation of the human body on stage (from
an ephemeral existence to a timeless work of art) will be discussed and analysed vis-a-vis the text and sub-texts of Stephen Daldry’s direction and Peter Darling’s
choreography. The dynamics of working-class masculinity will be contextualised within the framework of the family, the older female, the community, the self and
the act of dancing itself
Neural activity associated with episodic memory for emotional context
To address the question of which brain regions subserve retrieval of emotionally-valenced memories, we used event-related fMRI to index neural activity during the incidental retrieval of emotional and non-emotional contextual information. At study, emotionally neutral words were presented in the context of sentences that were either negatively, neutrally or positively valenced. At test, fMRI data were obtained while participants discriminated between studied and unstudied words. Recognition of words presented in emotionally negative relative to emotionally neutral contexts was associated with enhanced activity in right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, left amygdala and hippocampus, right lingual gyrus and posterior cingulate cortex. Recognition of words from positive relative to neutral contexts was associated with increased activity in bilateral prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortices, and left anterior temporal lobe. These findings suggest that neural activity mediating episodic retrieval of contextual information and its subsequent processing is modulated by emotion in at least two ways. First, there is enhancement of activity in networks supporting episodic retrieval of neutral information. Second, regions known to be activated when emotional information is encountered in the environment are also active when emotional information is retrieved from memory. Codimension-2 surfaces and their Hilbert spaces: low-energy clues for holography from general covariance
We argue that the holographic principle may be hinted at already from
low-energy considerations, assuming diffeomorphism invariance, quantum
mechanics and Minkowski-like causality. We consider the states of finite
spacelike hypersurfaces in a diffeomorphism-invariant QFT. A low-energy
regularization is assumed. We note a natural dependence of the Hilbert space on
a codimension-2 boundary surface. The Hilbert product is defined dynamically,
in terms of transition amplitudes which are described by a path integral. We
show that a canonical basis is incompatible with these assumptions, which opens
the possibility for a smaller Hilbert-space dimension than canonically
expected. We argue further that this dimension may decrease with surface area
at constant volume, hinting at holographic area-proportionality. We draw
comparisons with other approaches and setups, and propose an interpretation for
the non-holographic space of graviton states at asymptotically-Minkowski null

Energy-momentum diffusion from spacetime discreteness
We study potentially observable consequences of spatiotemporal discreteness
for the motion of massive and massless particles. First we describe some simple
intrinsic models for the motion of a massive point particle in a fixed causal
set background. At large scales, the microscopic swerves induced by the
underlying atomicity manifest themselves as a Lorentz invariant diffusion in
energy-momentum governed by a single phenomenological parameter, and we derive
in full the corresponding diffusion equation. Inspired by the simplicity of the
result, we then derive the most general Lorentz invariant diffusion equation
for a massless particle, which turns out to contain two phenomenological
parameters describing, respectively, diffusion and drift in the particle's
energy. The particles do not leave the light cone however: their worldlines
continue to be null geodesics. Finally, we deduce bounds on the drift and
diffusion constants for photons from the blackbody nature of the spectrum of
