"1kF1k_F" Singularities and Finite Density ABJM Theory at Strong Coupling

We study non-analytic behavior in the static charge susceptibility in finite density states of the ABJM theory using its holographic dual. Emphasis is placed on a particular state characterized by vanishing entropy density at zero temperature, and Fermi surface-like singularities in various fermionic correlation functions. The susceptibility exhibits branch points in the complex momentum plane, with a real part quantitatively very similar to the location of the Fermi surface singularities.Comment: 29 pages, 5 figures; v2: Minor additions to overview and discussion, some references added, version to appear in JHE

Black brane evaporation through D-brane bubble nucleation

We study the process of black brane evaporation through the emission of D-branes. Black branes in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes, holographically dual to field theory states at finite temperature and density, have previously been found to exhibit an instability due to brane nucleation. Working in the setting of D3-branes on the conifold, we construct static Euclidean solutions describing this nucleation to leading order-D3-branes bubbling off the horizon. Furthermore, we analyze the late-time dynamics of such a D3-brane bubble as it expands and find a steady-state solution including the wall profile and its speed.Peer reviewe

    Brane nucleation instabilities in non-AdS/non-CFT

We speculate that the weak gravity conjecture applied to theories with holographic duals bans the existence of disordered phases at zero temperature. We test this idea by introducing a non-zero baryon chemical potential in a deformation of the SU(N-c) x SU(N-c) Klebanov-Witten gauge theory with broken supersymmetry and conformal invariance. At low temperature, a disordered phase dual to a black brane geometry is unstable for low chemical potentials and metastable for high values. In the metastable phase, states with a partial Higgsing of the gauge group are favored over the normal disordered phase. This is reflected in the properties of the effective potential for color branes in the dual geometry, where the appearance of a global minimum outside the horizon signals the onset of a brane nucleation instability. When the Higgsing involves only one of the group factors, the global minimum remains at a finite distance from the horizon, making it possible to construct holographic duals to metastable "color superconducting" states. We also consider branes dual to excitations with baryon charge, but find that the extremal geometry remains marginally stable against the emission of particles carrying baryon charge independently of the strength of the deformation.Peer reviewe

Gravitational Waves at Strong Coupling from an Effective Action

    Get PDF
Using a holographic derivation of a quantum effective action for a scalar operator at strong coupling, we compute quasiequilibrium parameters relevant for the gravitational wave signal from a first-order phase transition in a simple dual model. We discuss how the parameters of the phase transition vary with the effective number of degrees of freedom of the dual field theory. Our model can produce an observable signal at LISA if the critical temperature is around a TeV, in a parameter region where the field theory has an approximate conformal symmetry.Peer reviewe

Effective actions and bubble nucleation from holography

    Get PDF
We discuss the computation of the quantum effective action of strongly interacting field theories using holographic duality and its use to determine quasiequilibrium parameters of first-order phase transitions relevant for gravitational wave production. A particularly simple holographic model is introduced, containing only the metric and a free massive scalar field. Despite the simplicity, the model contains a rich phase diagram, including first-order phase transitions at nonzero temperature, due to various multitrace deformations. We obtain the leading terms in the effective action from homogeneous black brane solutions in the gravity dual and linearized perturbations around them. We then employ the effective action to construct bubble and domain wall solutions in the field theory side and study their properties. In particular, we show how the scaling of the effective action with the effective number of degrees of freedom of the quantum field theory determines the corresponding scaling of gravitational wave parameters.Peer reviewe

Novel color superconducting phases of N = 4 super Yang-Mills at strong coupling

We revisit the large-N-c phase diagram of N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory at finite R-charge density and strong coupling, by means of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We conjecture new phases that result from a black hole shedding some of its charge through the nucleation of probe color D3-branes that remain at a finite distance from the black hole when the dual field theory lives on a sphere. In the corresponding ground states the color group is partially Higgsed, so these phases can be identified as having a type of color superconductivity. The new phases would appear at intermediate values of the R-charge chemical potential and we expect them to be metastable but long-lived in the large-N-c limit.Peer reviewe

Helicobacter pylori Adapts to Chronic Infection and Gastric Disease via pH-Responsive BabA-Mediated Adherence

International audienceThe BabA adhesin mediates high-affinity binding of Helicobacter pylori to the ABO blood group antigen-glycosylated gastric mucosa. Here we show that BabA is acid responsive-binding is reduced at low pH and restored by acid neutralization. Acid responsiveness differs among strains; often correlates with different intragastric regions and evolves during chronic infection and disease progression; and depends on pH sensor sequences in BabA and on pH reversible formation of high-affinity binding BabA multimers. We propose that BabA's extraordinary reversible acid responsiveness enables tight mucosal bacterial adherence while also allowing an effective escape from epithelial cells and mucus that are shed into the acidic bactericidal lumen and that bio-selection and changes in BabA binding properties through mutation and recombination with babA-related genes are selected by differences among individuals and by changes in gastric acidity over time. These processes generate diverse H. pylori subpopulations, in which BabA's adaptive evolution contributes to H. pylori persistence and overt gastric disease
