    Predictors of Quality of Life Among an International Sample of Mothers of Children 12 and Under With Corpus Callosum Disorders

    Previous research supports application of the Double ABCX model of family adaptation of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder and other pervasive developmental disorders. This is the first study to consider processes of adaptation among parents of children with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC). Using a quantitative cross-sectional design, an international sample of 266 mothers of children, aged 12 or under, with ACC completed an online survey. Parental reports of stress, resources, coping, and sense of coherence were evaluated as predictors of four subdimensions of parental quality of life for 178 mothers. In general, findings support the Double ABCX model as a viable approach to understanding processes that are related to quality of life among this group of mothers

    Radio frequency association of heteronuclear Feshbach molecules

    We present a detailed analysis of the production efficiency of weakly bound heteronuclear KRb-Feshbach molecules using radio frequency association in a harmonic trap. The efficiency was measured in a wide range of temperatures, binding energies and radio frequencies. A comprehensive analytical model is presented, explaining the observed asymmetric spectra and achieving good quantitative agreement with the measured production rates. This model provides a deep understanding of the molecule association process and paves the way for future experiments which rely on Feshbach molecules e.g. for the production of deeply bound molecules.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Parametric amplification of vacuum fluctuations in a spinor condensate

    Parametric amplification of vacuum fluctuations is crucial in modern quantum optics, enabling the creation of squeezing and entanglement. We demonstrate the parametric amplification of vacuum fluctuations for matter waves using a spinor F=2 Rb-87 condensate. Interatomic interactions lead to correlated pair creation in the m_F= +/- 1 states from an initial unstable m_F=0 condensate, which acts as a vacuum for m_F unequal 0. Although this pair creation from a pure m_F=0 condensate is ideally triggered by vacuum fluctuations, unavoidable spurious initial m_F= +/- 1 atoms induce a classical seed which may become the dominant triggering mechanism. We show that pair creation is insensitive to a classical seed for sufficiently large magnetic fields, demonstrating the dominant role of vacuum fluctuations. The presented system thus provides a direct path towards the generation of non-classical states of matter on the basis of spinor condensates.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Chapter 2: Navigating the mentoring process in a research-based teacher development project: A situated learning perspective

    In this article, the authors investigate key aspects of a 2-year study of mentoring within a reform-based teacher development project, explore the various mentor relationships, and theorize about key events, tensions, and dynamics that resulted in an unexpected sense of community among project stakeholders as a direct result of mentoring. Data for this article describe the impact of teacher mentoring within the Assessment Initiative for Middle School Physical Education (AIMS-PE) project. AIMS-PE was a multi-year Center for Disease Control grant funded project with goals including assisting in-service teachers to examine and reframe their assessment practices and to increase their students. knowledge and behaviors of physical activity. Initiation and development of positive mentoring relationships among participating teachers and their mentors was a major component of this effort, providing necessary support and encouragement to meet project objectives. Also, the authors explore participants\u27 experiences in the project to better understand the influences of teacher mentoring that contributed to the development of a sense of community

    Platforms and the pandemic: A case study of fashion rental platforms during COVID-19

    From Airbnb to Uber, the sharing or platform economy has reshaped many aspects of our economy and society. In recent years, fashion rental platforms have gained in popularity, fuelling the introduction of the platform economy in fashion. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the impact on fashion rental platforms was abrupt, with demand disappearing seemingly overnight as events were cancelled and many people began working from home. Drawing on a case study of fashion rental platforms, we explore the immediate consequences of the pandemic on this segment of the platform economy, examining both the challenges these platforms face in the short term and the strategies platforms have adopted to try and weather the storm. We highlight how the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on fashion rental platforms thus far intersects with issues pertaining to value creation, precarious work, gender, and sustainable consumption. In doing so, we reflect on how fashion rental platforms inform understanding of the platform economy more broadly and conclude by suggesting themes for future research

    Multi-resonant spinor dynamics in a Bose-Einstein condensate

    We analyze the spinor dynamics of a Rb-87 F=2 condensate initially prepared in the m_F=0 Zeeman sublevel. We show that this dynamics, characterized by the creation of correlated atomic pairs in m_F=+/-1, presents an intriguing multi-resonant magnetic field dependence induced by the trap inhomogeneity. This dependence is directly linked to the most unstable Bogoliubov spin excitations of the initial m_F = 0 condensate, showing that, in general, even a qualitative understanding of the pair creation efficiency in a spinor condensate requires a careful consideration of the confinement.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Recent Trends in Oral Anticoagulant Use and Post-Discharge Complications Among Atrial Fibrillation Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction

    Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common complication of acute myocardial infarction (AMI).The CHA2DS2VAScand CHADS2risk scoresare used to identifypatients with AF at risk for strokeand to guide oral anticoagulants (OAC) use, including patients with AMI. However, the epidemiology of AF, further stratifiedaccording to patients\u27 risk of stroke, has not been wellcharacterized among those hospitalized for AMI. Methods: We examined trends in the frequency of AF, rates of discharge OAC use, and post-discharge outcomes among 6,627 residents of the Worcester, Massachusetts area who survived hospitalization for AMI at 11 medical centers between 1997 and 2011. Results: A total of 1,050AMI patients had AF (16%) andthe majority (91%)had a CHA2DS2VAScscore \u3e 2.AF rates were highest among patients in the highest stroke risk group.In comparison to patients without AF, patients with AMI and AF in the highest stroke risk category had higher rates of post-discharge complications, including higher 30-day re-hospitalization [27 % vs. 17 %], 30-day post-discharge death [10 % vs. 5%], and 1-year post-discharge death [46 % vs. 18 %] (p \u3c 0.001 for all). Notably, fewer than half of guideline-eligible AF patients received an OAC prescription at discharge. Usage rates for other evidence-based therapies such as statins and beta-blockers,lagged in comparison to AMI patients free from AF. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the need to enhance efforts towards stroke prevention among AMI survivors with AF

    The dynamic clustering of insulin receptor underlies its signaling and is disrupted in insulin resistance

    Insulin receptor (IR) signaling is central to normal metabolic control and is dysregulated in metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes. We report here that IR is incorporated into dynamic clusters at the plasma membrane, in the cytoplasm and in the nucleus of human hepatocytes and adipocytes. Insulin stimulation promotes further incorporation of IR into these dynamic clusters in insulin-sensitive cells but not in insulin-resistant cells, where both IR accumulation and dynamic behavior are reduced. Treatment of insulin-resistant cells with metformin, a first-line drug used to treat type 2 diabetes, can rescue IR accumulation and the dynamic behavior of these clusters. This rescue is associated with metformin’s role in reducing reactive oxygen species that interfere with normal dynamics. These results indicate that changes in the physico-mechanical features of IR clusters contribute to insulin resistance and have implications for improved therapeutic approaches
