    Operator product expansions as a consequence of phase space properties

    The paper presents a model-independent, nonperturbative proof of operator product expansions in quantum field theory. As an input, a recently proposed phase space condition is used that allows a precise description of point field structures.     Age-dependent alterations of monocyte subsets and monocyte-related chemokine pathways in healthy adults

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Recent experimental approaches have unraveled essential migratory and functional differences of monocyte subpopulations in mice. In order to possibly translate these findings into human physiology and pathophysiology, human monocyte subsets need to be carefully revisited in health and disease. In analogy to murine studies, we hypothesized that human monocyte subsets dynamically change during ageing, potentially influencing their functionality and contributing to immunosenescence.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Circulating monocyte subsets, surface marker and chemokine receptor expression were analyzed in 181 healthy volunteers (median age 42, range 18-88). Unlike the unaffected total leukocyte or total monocyte counts, non-classical CD14<sup>+</sup>CD16<sup>+ </sup>monocytes significantly increased with age, but displayed reduced HLA-DR and CX<sub>3</sub>CR1 surface expression in the elderly. Classical CD14<sup>++</sup>CD16<sup>- </sup>monocyte counts did not vary dependent on age. Serum MCP-1 (CCL2), but not MIP1α (CCL3), MIP1β (CCL4) or fractalkine (CX<sub>3</sub>CL1) concentrations increased with age. Monocyte-derived macrophages from old or young individuals did not differ with respect to cytokine release <it>in vitro </it>at steady state or upon LPS stimulation.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our study demonstrates dynamic changes of circulating monocytes during ageing in humans. The expansion of the non-classical CD14<sup>+</sup>CD16<sup>+ </sup>subtype, alterations of surface protein and chemokine receptor expression as well as circulating monocyte-related chemokines possibly contribute to the preserved functionality of the monocyte pool throughout adulthood.</p

    Relevance of Serum Leptin and Leptin-Receptor Concentrations in Critically Ill Patients

    The adipocyte-derived cytokine leptin was implicated to link inflammation and metabolic alterations. We investigated the potential role of leptin components in critically ill patients, because systemic inflammation, insulin resistance, and hyperglycemia are common features of critical illness. Upon admission to Medical Intensive Care Unit (ICU), free leptin and soluble leptin-receptor serum concentrations were determined in 137 critically ill patients (95 with sepsis, 42 without sepsis) and 26 healthy controls. Serum leptin or leptin-receptor did not differ between patients or controls and were independent of sepsis. However, serum leptin was closely associated with obesity and diabetes and clearly correlated with markers of metabolism and liver function. Leptin-receptor was an unfavourable prognostic indicator, associated with mortality during three years follow-up. Our study indicates a functional role of leptin in the pathogenesis of severe illness and emphasizes the impact of complex metabolic alterations on the clinical outcome of critically ill patients

    Far-infrared transmission studies of c-axis oriented superconducting MgB2 thin film

    We reported far-infrared transmission measurements on a c-axis oriented superconducting MgB2_{2} thin film in the frequency range of 30 \sim 250 cm1^{-1}. We found that these measurements were sensitive to values of scattering rate 1/τ1/\tau and superconducting gap 2Δ2\Delta. By fitting the experimental transmission spectra at 40 K and below, we obtained 1/τ=1/\tau = (700 \sim 1000) cm1^{-1} and 2Δ(0)2\Delta (0)\cong 42 cm1^{-1}. These two quantities suggested that MgB2_{2} belong to the dirty limit.Comment: submitted at May

    Toward high-efficiency hybrid (electricity and heat) high concentration photovoltaic systems

    Paper presented to the 3rd Southern African Solar Energy Conference, South Africa, 11-13 May, 2015.Photovoltaic power generation is a growing renewable primary energy source, expected to assume a major role as we strive toward fossil fuel free energy production. However, the rather low photovoltaic efficiencies limit the conversion of solar radiation into useful power output. Hybrid systems extend the functionality of concentrating photovoltaics (CPV) from simply generating electricity, to providing simultaneously electricity and heat. The utilization of otherwise wasted heat significantly enhances the overall system efficiency and boosts the economic value of the generated power output. The system presented in this lecture is the outcome of collaborative research in my research group, with the IBM research lab in Zurich and the Fraunhofer Institute for solar energy systems in Freiburg, Germany. It consists of a scalable hybrid photovoltaic-thermal receiver package, cooled with an integrated high performance microchannel heat sink we initially developed and optimized for the efficient cooling of electronics. The package can be operated at elevated temperatures due to its overall low thermal resistance between solar cell and coolant. The effect of the harvested elevated coolant temperature on the photovoltaic efficiency is investigated. The higher-level available heat can be suitable for sophisticated thermal applications such as space heating, desalination or cooling (polygeneration approaches). A total hybrid conversion efficiency of solar radiation into useful power of 60% has been realized. The exergy content of the overall output power was increased by 50% through the exergy content of the extracted heat.dc201

    Optimisation of antioxidants extraction from soybeans fermented by Aspergillus oryzae

    4 figuras, 7 tablasThe extraction of antioxidant compounds from soybeansfermented with Aspergillusoryzae was optimised using a factorial design. A kinetic study of the total phenolic production and DPPH radical scavenging activity was first performed at the points selected in the factorial design. In both cases, the experimental profiles were fitted to a modified first-order kinetic model. To investigate the combined effects of temperature and solvent concentration on the extraction, the parameters obtained from the fitted kinetic models were used as response variables in a rotatable second-order design with quintuple replications in the centre of the experimental domain. The results obtained indicate that temperature had the most significant effect. The response surfaces show a maximum in the experimental domain studied. The optimum conditions for the extraction of total phenolic content were 65.3 °C and 73.1% ethanol, in which 56.2 mg of GAE/g were predicted. A scavenging activity of 81.6% DPPH radical was predicted at the optimum conditions of 61.6 °C and 60% ethanolDrs.     MBM 12: young protoplanetary discs at high galactic latitude

    (abridged) We present Spitzer infrared observations to constrain disc and dust evolution in young T Tauri stars in MBM 12, a star-forming cloud at high latitude with an age of 2 Myr and a distance of 275 pc. The region contains 12 T Tauri systems, with primary spectral types between K3 and M6; 5 are weak-line and the rest classical T Tauri stars. We first use MIPS and literature photometry to compile spectral energy distributions for each of the 12 members in MBM 12, and derive their IR excesses. The IRS spectra are analysed with the newly developed two-layer temperature distribution (TLTD) spectral decomposition method. For the 7 T Tauri stars with a detected IR excess, we analyse their solid-state features to derive dust properties such as mass-averaged grain size, composition and crystallinity. We find a spatial gradient in the forsterite to enstatite range, with more enstatite present in the warmer regions. The fact that we see a radial dependence of the dust properties indicates that radial mixing is not very efficient in the discs of these young T Tauri stars. The SED analysis shows that the discs in MBM 12, in general, undergo rapid inner disc clearing, while the binary sources have faster discevolution. The dust grains seem to evolve independently from the stellar properties, but are mildly related to disc properties such as flaring and accretion rates.Comment: 14 pages, accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysic
