    Opportunistic Access in Frequency Hopping Cognitive Radio Networks

    Researchers in the area of cognitive radio often investigate the utility of dynamic spectrum access as a means to make more efficient use of the radio frequency spectrum. Many studies have been conducted to find ways in which a secondary user can occupy spectrum licensed to a primary user in a manner which does not disrupt the primary user\u27s performance. This research investigates the use of opportunistic access in a frequency hopping radio to mitigate the interference caused by other transmitters in a contentious environment such as the unlicensed 2.4 GHz region. Additionally, this work demonstrates how dynamic spectrum access techniques can be used not only to prevent interfering with other users but also improve the robustness of a communication system

    An Experiment on Bare-Metal BigData Provisioning

    Many BigData customers use on-demand platforms in the cloud, where they can get a dedicated virtual cluster in a couple of minutes and pay only for the time they use. Increasingly, there is a demand for bare-metal bigdata solutions for applications that cannot tolerate the unpredictability and performance degradation of virtualized systems. Existing bare-metal solutions can introduce delays of 10s of minutes to provision a cluster by installing operating systems and applications on the local disks of servers. This has motivated recent research developing sophisticated mechanisms to optimize this installation. These approaches assume that using network mounted boot disks incur unacceptable run-time overhead. Our analysis suggest that while this assumption is true for application data, it is incorrect for operating systems and applications, and network mounting the boot disk and applications result in negligible run-time impact while leading to faster provisioning time.This research was supported in part by the MassTech Collaborative Research Matching Grant Program, NSF awards 1347525 and 1414119 and several commercial partners of the Massachusetts Open Cloud who may be found at http://www.massopencloud.or

    ATP Reception and Chemosensory Adaptation in \u3c/i\u3eTetrahymena thermophila\u3c/i\u3e

    Micromolar concentrations of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and its non-hydrolyzable analog β- γ -methylene ATP are both effective depolarizing chemorepellents in Tetrahymena thermophila. Chemorepellent behavior consists of repeated bouts of backward swimming (avoidance reactions) that can easily be quantified to provide a convenient bioassay for purinergic reception studies. Chemosensory adaptation occurs following prolonged exposure (10 min) to the repellents, and cells regain normal swimming behavior. Adaptation is specific since cells that are behaviorally adapted to either ATP or β- γ -methylene ATP still retain full responsiveness to the chemorepellents GTP and lysozyme. However, cross adaptation occurs between ATP and β- γ -methylene ATP, suggesting that they involve the same receptor. Behavioral sensitivity to both ATP and β- γ -methylene ATP is increased by the addition of Na+, but addition of either Ca2+ or Mg2+ dramatically decreases the response to ATP. These ionic effects are correlated with in vivo ATP hydrolysis, suggesting that divalent ions decrease purinergic sensitivity by activating a Ca2+- or Mg2+-dependent ecto-ATPase to hydrolyze the ATP signal. In vivo [32P]ATP binding studies and Scatchard analysis suggest that the behavioral adaptation is due to a decrease in the number of surface binding sites, as represented by decreased Bmax values. All these changes are reversible (de-adaptation) after 12 min in a repellent-free buffer. Electrophysiological analysis showed that both β- γ -methylene ATP (10 micromol l-1) and ATP (500 micromol l-1) elicited sustained, reversible depolarizations while GTP (10 micromol l-1) produced a transient depolarization, suggesting that the chemosensory response pathways for ATP and GTP reception may differ. There may be separate ATP and GTP receptors since ATP and GTP responses do not cross-adapt and ‘cold’ (unlabeled) GTP is not a good inhibitor of [32P]ATP binding. These results suggests that T. thermophila possess high-affinity surface receptors for ATP that are down-regulated during chemosensory adaptation. These ATP receptors may act as chemorepellent receptors to enable T. thermophila to recognize recently lysed cells and avoid a possibly deleterious situation. This is the simplest eukaryotic organism to show an electrophysiological response to external ATP

    Lexical Interference in Semantic Processing of Simple Words: Implications for Brand Names

    This study provides evidence for a Stroop-like interference effect in word recognition. Based on phonologic and semantic properties of simple words, participants who performed a same/different word-recognition task exhibited a significant response latency increase when word pairs (e.g., POLL, ROD) featured a comparison word (POLL) that was a homonym of a synonym (pole) of the target word (ROD). These results support a parallel-processing framework of lexical decision making, in which activation of the pathways to word recognition may occur at different levels automatically and in parallel. A subset of simple words that are also brand names was examined and exhibited this same interference. Implications for word recognition theory and practical implications for strategic marketing are discussed

    Is hypoxia’s influence restricted to the deep? Evaluation of nearshore community composition in Hood Canal, Washington, a seasonally hypoxic estuary

    Hypoxia [dissolved oxygen (DO) \u3c 2 mg L-1] has been identified as a key threat to the Puget Sound ecosystem, particularly in Hood Canal. Hood Canal is subject to seasonal hypoxia in its southern reaches, and prior work has demonstrated avoidance patterns of demersal species from the deep, offshore hypoxia-impacted waters. However, the non-lethal impact of low DO conditions on the nearshore community is not well understood, despite its importance to the estuary (e.g., nursery habitat). We evaluated the nature and extent of the sub-lethal influence of hypoxia on the nearshore community using underwater video monitoring techniques. Within two regions of Hood Canal, a southern highly impacted region and a northern reference region, we recorded weekly underwater video of the benthos via transects at three depths (10, 20, 30m) to measure species density and composition. Weekly monitoring of water quality revealed strong differences in DO over time and space, with the vertical extent of low DO waters increasing markedly at the end of summer in the south. While we were unable to detect acute shifts in nearshore densities, the community composition was significantly different between the two study regions; the south was primarily composed of hypoxia tolerant invertebrates and fewer fish species compared to the north. Moreover, the tolerant invertebrates displayed a three-fold increase in presence below a specific DO threshold (mean threshold ± SE = 3.95 mg L-1 ± 0.22), while the more sensitive species (e.g., fish) declined. Post-hoc comparisons of our findings to long-term DO trends in Hood Canal revealed the potential for a more persistent low DO state in the southern reaches. As a result, this study provides further insight into the complex regional differences in community structure and potential sensitivity of the nearshore community to other perturbations in Hood Canal

A US study by Pitts et al found that supervised resident visits were associated with greater resource use, including longer length of stay (LOS) in the ED. As EDs host more core clerkship courses, less experienced students have become involved in bedside care.     Call Me Caitlyn: Making and making over the 'authentic' transgender body in Anglo-American popular culture

    A conception of transgender identity as an ‘authentic’ gendered core ‘trapped’ within a mismatched corporeality, and made tangible through corporeal transformations, has attained unprecedented legibility in contemporary Anglo-American media. Whilst pop-cultural articulations of this discourse have received some scholarly attention, the question of why this 'wrong body' paradigm has solidified as the normative explanation for gender transition within the popular media remains underexplored. This paper argues that this discourse has attained cultural pre-eminence through its convergence with a broader media and commercial zeitgeist, in which corporeal alteration and maintenance are perceived as means of accessing one’s ‘authentic’ self. I analyse the media representations of two transgender celebrities: Caitlyn Jenner and Nadia Almada, alongside the reality TV show TRANSform Me, exploring how these women’s gender transitions have been discursively aligned with a cultural imperative for all women, cisgender or trans, to display their authentic femininity through bodily work. This demonstrates how established tropes of authenticity-via-bodily transformation, have enabled transgender to become culturally legible through the wrong body trope. Problematically, I argue, this process has worked to demarcate ideals of ‘acceptable’ transgender subjectivity: self-sufficient, normatively feminine, and eager to embrace the possibilities for happiness and social integration provided by the commercial domain
