F-8C digital CCV flight control laws

A set of digital flight control laws were designed for the NASA F-8C digital fly-by-wire aircraft. The control laws emphasize Control Configured Vehicle (CCV) benefits. Specific pitch axis objectives were improved handling qualities, angle-of-attack limiting, gust alleviation, drag reduction in steady and maneuvering flight, and a capability to fly with reduced static stability. The lateral-directional design objectives were improved Dutch roll damping and turn coordination over a wide range in angle-of-attack. An overall program objective was to explore the use of modern control design methodilogy to achieve these specific CCV benefits. A versatile electrostatic trap

A four electrode electrostatic trap geometry is demonstrated that can be used to combine a dipole, quadrupole and hexapole field. A cold packet of 15ND3 molecules is confined in both a purely quadrupolar and hexapolar trapping field and additionally, a dipole field is added to a hexapole field to create either a double-well or a donut-shaped trapping field. The profile of the 15ND3 packet in each of these four trapping potentials is measured, and the dependence of the well-separation and barrier height of the double-well and donut potential on the hexapole and dipole term are discussed.Comment: submitted to pra; 7 pages, 9 figure

The emerging role of retromer in neuroprotection

Efficient sorting and transportation of integral membrane proteins, such as ion channels, nutrient transporters, signalling receptors, cell-cell and cell-matrix adhesion molecules is essential for the function of cellular organelles and hence organism development and physiology. Retromer is a master controller of integral membrane protein sorting and transport through one of the major sorting station within eukaryotic cells, the endosomal network. Subtle de-regulation of retromer is an emerging theme in the pathoetiology of Parkinson's disease. Here we summarise recent advances in defining the neuroprotective role of retromer and how its de-regulation may contribute to Parkinson's disease by interfering with: lysosomal health and protein degradation, association with accessory proteins including the WASH complex and mitochondrial health

Multiple packets of neutral molecules revolving for over a mile

The level of control that one has over neutral molecules in beams dictates their possible applications. Here we experimentally demonstrate that state-selected, neutral molecules can be kept together in a few mm long packet for a distance of over one mile. This is accomplished in a circular arrangement of 40 straight electrostatic hexapoles through which the molecules propagate over 1000 times. Up to 19 packets of molecules have simultaneously been stored in this ring structure. This brings the realization of a molecular low-energy collider within reach

Predicting the transition from acute to persistent low back pain

Background Most people experience low back pain (LBP) at least once in their lifetime. Only a minority of them go on to develop persistent LBP. However, the socioeconomic costs of persistent LBP significantly exceed the costs of the initial acute LBP episode. Aims To identify factors that influence the progression of acute LBP to the persistent state at an early stage. Methods Prospective inception cohort study of patients attending a health practitioner for their first episode of acute LBP or recurrent LBP after a pain free period of at least 6 months. Patients were assessed at baseline addressing occupational and psychological factors as well as pain, disability, quality of life and physical activity and followed up at 3, 6, 12 weeks and 6 months. Variables were combined to the three indices ‘working condition', ‘depression and maladaptive cognitions' and ‘pain and quality of life'. Results The index ‘depression and maladaptive cognitions' was found to be a significant baseline predictor for persistent LBP up to 6 months (OR 5.1; 95% CI: 1.04-25.1). Overall predictive accuracy of the model was 81%. Conclusions In this study of patients with acute LBP in a primary care setting psychological factors at baseline correlated with a progression to persistent LBP up to 6 months. Chronic diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain: psychometric properties of pain and physical function outcome measures

Background: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) not only produces severe pain, tingling, and numbness sensation in the involved limbs, but also limits physical function due to loss of sensation. There are no recommended methods for clinical situations to measure these signs and symptoms. Studies with high methodological quality use the modified Brief Pain Inventory for Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathic pain (mBPI-DPN) scale and the short form Screening of Activity Limitations and Safety Awareness (sSALSA) scale for measuring these symptoms in DPN population. In order to capture a real change in the variables of interest, the psychometric properties of that measure should be within acceptable limits. As these two measures were not assessed for all of the psychometric properties, there was a need for further evaluation. Methods: Data were collected (n = 38 patients) in a longitudinal cohort study. Test–retest reliability (0–4 weeks) and Responsiveness- Minimal Clinically Important Difference (MCID) (0–12 weeks) were calculated between two sessions. Convergent validity was assessed (between mBPI-DPN pain interference and sSALSA scale). Results: Both measures demonstrated acceptable test–retest reliability (mBPI-DPN scale: ICC = 0.61, SEM = 12.92; the sSALSA scale: ICC = 0.81, SEM = 4.88) and convergent validity (Spearman’s correlation coefficient r = 0.62). The computational methods used in different methodologies to calculate MCID for the mBPI-DPN and the sSALSA scale were varied, hence the magnitude of derived MCID scores also varied. Conclusions: Our study have provided evidence to add to the scientific basis surrounding the use of mBPI-DPN and sSALSA scales in DPN population, but standardization of these measures in a larger population is required

Directions for research practice in decolonising methodologies: Contending with paradox

The complex nature of colonisation presents with the potential for paradoxes in decolonising approaches, hence, fixed conventions and methods are discouraged. In this way, decolonising methodologies concerns interrogating dominant conventions in research that have typically excluded alternative ways of knowing from academia. This raises concern about the issue of breaking conventions, when it is potentially difficult to realise that one is depending upon them. An incremental approach to the research process and subsequent knowledge generated provides opportunity to challenge the conventions that typically dictate research praxis. In addition, fostering epistemological transformation and pluralism presents a solution to problems derived from dominant cultural assumptions and practices. My aim for this article is to extend upon the literature pertaining to decolonising methodologies, with this contribution of focusing on the research process as a means to avoid paradox in the decolonial intention. Accordingly, a process imperative that focuses on how researchers do research, over the tendency to focus on outcomes, emerges as a strategy to identify and contend with paradoxes within decolonial work. A questioning convention is posited as a means for mining the assumptions and biases of the dominant culture that would otherwise ensnare ones thinking. Consequently, research may be better liberated from oppressive colonising practices that are tacit within research and academic conventions. Narratives are provided throughout for illustrative example, and to better explore the concepts named
