Protein/lipid interactions in phospholipid monolayers containing the bacterial antenna protein B800-850
Studies on monomolecular layers of phospholipids containing the antenna protein B800-850 (LHCP) and in
some cases additionally the reaction center of the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides
are reported. Information on monolayer preparation as well as on protein /lipid and protein/protein
interaction is obtained by means of fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy at the air/water interface in
combination with film balance experiments. It is shown that a homogeneous distribution of functional
proteins can be achieved. This can be transformed into a regular pattern-like distribution by inducing a
phospholipid phase transition. Although the LHCP preferentially partitions into the fluid lipid phase, it
decreases the lateral pressure necessary to crystallize the lipid. This is probably due to an increase in order of
the fluid phase. A pressure-induced conformation change of the LHCP is detected via a drastic change in
fluorescence yield. A highly efficient energy transfer from LHCP to the reaction center is observed. This
proves the quantitative reconstitution of both types of proteins and indicates protein aggregation also in the
monolayer
Nonlinear Phenomena in Canonical Stochastic Quantization
Stochastic quantization provides a connection between quantum field theory
and statistical mechanics, with applications especially in gauge field
theories. Euclidean quantum field theory is viewed as the equilibrium limit of
a statistical system coupled to a thermal reservoir. Nonlinear phenomena in
stochastic quantization arise when employing nonlinear Brownian motion as an
underlying stochastic process. We discuss a novel formulation of the Higgs
mechanism in QED.Comment: 8 pages, invited talk at the International Workshop ``Critical

A Pascal-like triangle with quaternionic entries
In this paper we consider a Pascal-like triangle as result of the expansion of a binomial in terms of the generators e1, e2 of the non-commutative Clifford algebra Câ„“0, 2 over R. The study of various patterns in such structure and the discussion of its properties are carried out. This work was supported by Portuguese funds through the Research Centre of Mathematics of University of Minho - CMAT, and the Center of Research and Development in Mathematics and Applications - CIDMA (University of Aveiro), and the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology ("FCT -Fundacao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia"), within projects UIDB/00013/2020, UIDP/00013/2020, and UIDB/04106/2020
Vietoris' number sequence and its generalizations through hypercomplex function theory
The so-called Vietoris' number sequence is a sequence of rational numbers that appeared for the first time in a celebrated theorem by Vietoris (1958) about the positivity of certain trigonometric sums with important applications in harmonic analysis (Askey/Steinig, 1974) and in the theory of stable holomorphic functions (Ruscheweyh/ Salinas, 2004). In the context of hypercomplex function theory those numbers appear as coefficients of special homogeneous polynomials in R^3 whose generalization to an arbitrary dimension n lead to a n-parameter generalized Vietoris' number sequence that characterizes hypercomplex Appell polynomials in R^n.The work of the second author was supported by Portuguese funds through the CMAT - Centre of Mathematics and FCT within the Project UID/MAT/00013/2013. Variation beneath the surface: Quantifying complex thermal environments on coral reefs in the Caribbean, Bahamas and Florida
Analysis of in situ temperature records collected on six coral reefs in the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Florida Keys reveal significant variability across a range of temporal and spatial scales from minutes to seasons, across depths, and among sites. Subsurface variability occurring at daily and faster frequencies is prevalent across the region, likely driven by combinations of diurnal heating and cooling, wind driven advection, and internal waves at tidal and faster frequencies. This high frequency variability is not detected in records of remotely-sensed sea surface temperature alone. Diurnal variability likely caused by diurnal solar heating and cooling and possibly by advection associated with diurnal winds (daily sea breeze) was significant at all sites and showed greatest magnitude of variation at shallowest depths. Temperature fluctuations at tidal and faster frequencies were common at 5 out of the 6 sites. The magnitude of this variability is not well explained by measured vertical temperature stratification combined with oscillations of the water column associated with barotropic surface tides. Rather, the magnitude and nature of the temperature changes point to the presence of internal waves generated at tidal and faster frequencies. Power spectra calculated seasonally show greatest variability within both diurnal and semi-diurnal frequency bands in Spring and Summer at Florida, Bahamas, Jamaica, and St. Croix. Variability within the semi-diurnal frequency band at Belize and Bonaire was greatest in Winter. Warming in Summer estimated as degree-hours per day above 29.0°C increased with increasing latitude and varied significantly among sites and depths in a manner not predictable from remotely sensed SST data alone. Site latitude was directly related to the amplitude of the seasonal thermal variability, but was not tightly related to variability at daily and faster frequencies which was greatest at the highest and lowest latitude sites. The interactions of depth, site, and season across the study region are associated with distinct signals of thermal variability, and have significant implications for the physiology and ecology of corals and other reef organisms
Anomalous frequency and intensity scaling of collective and local modes in a coupled spin tetrahedron system
We report on the magnetic excitation spectrum of the coupled spin tetrahedral
system CuTeOCl using Raman scattering on single
crystals. The transition to an ordered state at T=18.2 K evidenced
from thermodynamic data leads to the evolution of distinct low-energy magnetic
excitations superimposed by a broad maximum. These modes are ascribed to
magnons with different degree of localization and a two-magnon continuum. Two
of the modes develop a substantial energy shift with decreasing temperature
similar to the order parameter of other Neel ordered systems. The other two
modes show only a negligible temperature dependence and dissolve above the
ordering temperature in a continuum of excitations at finite energies. These
observations point to a delicate interplay of magnetic inter- and
intra-tetrahedra degrees of freedom and an importance of singlet fluctuations
in describing a spin dynamics.Comment: 7pages, 6figures, 1tabl
