    Making it in academic psychology: Demographic and personality correlates of eminence

    Citations to published work, personality, and demographic characteristics were examined in a sample of male and female academic psychologists. A large sex difference was found in citations with men receiving significantly more recognition. Reputational rankings of graduate school and current institution were significantly related to citations, as were components of achievement motivation. Mastery and work needs were positively related to citations while competitiveness was negatively associated with the criterion. A model of attainment in psychology is proposed and possible explanations for the differential recognition of women are explored

    Analytic provenance as constructs of behavioural markers for externalizing thinking processes in criminal intelligence analysis

    Studying how analysts use interaction in visualization systems is an important part of evaluating how well these interactions support analysis needs, like generating insights or performing tasks. Analytic Provenance commonly known as interaction histories contains information about the sequence of choices that analysts make when exploring data or performing a task. This research work presents a compositional reductionist approach as a way of externalizing analyst’s thinking processes by using markers of analytical behaviour extracted from such interaction histories. Set of Behavioural Markers (BMs) have been identified through a workshop with domain experts and a systematic literature review to use them as cognitive attributes of imagination, insight, transparency, fluidity and rigour to enhance performance in criminal intelligence analysis. A low level semantic action sequence computation also has been proposed as a detection approach of identified BMs and found from computation that BMs can act as bridge between human cognition and computation through semantic interaction. This research work has addressed problems of existing qualitative experiments to extract these BMs through cognitive task analysis and found that the proposed computational technique can be a supplementary approach for validating experimental results

    The Safety Attitudes Questionnaire: psychometric properties, benchmarking data, and emerging research

    BACKGROUND: There is widespread interest in measuring healthcare provider attitudes about issues relevant to patient safety (often called safety climate or safety culture). Here we report the psychometric properties, establish benchmarking data, and discuss emerging areas of research with the University of Texas Safety Attitudes Questionnaire. METHODS: Six cross-sectional surveys of health care providers (n = 10,843) in 203 clinical areas (including critical care units, operating rooms, inpatient settings, and ambulatory clinics) in three countries (USA, UK, New Zealand). Multilevel factor analyses yielded results at the clinical area level and the respondent nested within clinical area level. We report scale reliability, floor/ceiling effects, item factor loadings, inter-factor correlations, and percentage of respondents who agree with each item and scale. RESULTS: A six factor model of provider attitudes fit to the data at both the clinical area and respondent nested within clinical area levels. The factors were: Teamwork Climate, Safety Climate, Perceptions of Management, Job Satisfaction, Working Conditions, and Stress Recognition. Scale reliability was 0.9. Provider attitudes varied greatly both within and among organizations. Results are presented to allow benchmarking among organizations and emerging research is discussed. CONCLUSION: The Safety Attitudes Questionnaire demonstrated good psychometric properties. Healthcare organizations can use the survey to measure caregiver attitudes about six patient safety-related domains, to compare themselves with other organizations, to prompt interventions to improve safety attitudes and to measure the effectiveness of these interventions

    Substrate-dependent differences in production of extracellular matrix molecules by squamous carcinoma cells and diploid fibroblasts

    Two human squamous carcinoma cell lines and human diploid fibroblasts were examined for the production of extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules including fibronectin (FN), laminin (LN), and thrombospondin (TSP) when grown on a number of different substrates. The substrates used included glass, plastic, collagen (gelatin), and DEAE-dextran. Levels of TSP as indicated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay did not vary significantly as a function of substrate. In contrast, LN levels in the culture medium were significantly decreased when the cells were grown on DEAE-dextran or collagen-linked dextran as compared to the other substrates. FN levels were slightly lower in the culture medium of the cells grown on DEAE-dextran. Biosynthetic labeling followed by immunoprecipitation indicated that the reduction in LN was due, in part, to decreased biosynthesis. Previous studies have indicated that LN influences the behavior of epithelial cells in culture and that the cells, themselves, are a major source of the LN. The differences in LN production noted here indicate that the production of this ECM component is influenced by the substratum on which the cells are grown.     Discrepant perceptions of communication, teamwork and situation awareness among surgical team members

    Objective To assess surgical team members’ differences in perception of non-technical skills. Design Questionnaire design. Setting Operating theatres (OTs) at one university hospital, three teaching hospitals and one general hospital in the Netherlands. Participants Sixty-six surgeons, 97 OT nurses, 18 anaesthetists and 40 nurse anaesthetists. Methods All surgical team members, of five hospitals, were asked to complete a questionnaire and state their opinion on the current state of communication, teamwork and situation awareness at the OT. Results Ratings for ‘communication’ were significantly different, particularly between surgeons and all other team members (P ? 0.001). The ratings for ‘teamwork’ differed significantly between all team members (P ? 0.005). Within ‘situation awareness’ significant differences were mainly observed for ‘gathering information’ between surgeons and other team members (P < 0.001). Finally, 72–90% of anaesthetists, OT nurses and nurse anaesthetists rated routine team briefings and debriefings as inadequate. Conclusions This study shows discrepancies on many aspects in perception between surgeons and other surgical team members concerning communication, teamwork and situation awareness. Future research needs to ascertain whether these discrepancies are linked to greater risk of adverse events or to process as well as systems failures.     A proposed quantitative methodology for the evaluation of the effectiveness of Human Element, Leadership and Management (HELM) training in the UK

    In 2006, a review of maritime accidents found that non-technical skills (NTSs) are the single largest contributing factor towards such incidents. NTSs are composed of both interpersonal and cognitive elements. These include things such as situational awareness, teamwork, decision making, leadership, management and communication skills. In a crisis situation, good NTSs allow a deck officer to quickly recognise that a problem exists and then harness the resources that are at their disposal to safely and efficiently bring the situation back under control. This paper has two aims. The first is to develop a methodology which will enable educators to quantitatively assess the impact of Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA)-approved Human Element, Leadership and Management (HELM) training on deck officer’s NTSs with a view to identifying further training requirements. The second is to determine whether the HELM training provided to develop the NTSs of trainee deck officers is fit for purpose. To achieve these aims, a three-phase approach was adopted. Initially, a taxonomy for deck officer’s NTSs is established, behavioural markers are identified and the relative importance of each attribute is calculated using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). Subsequently, a set of scenarios were identified for the assessment of deck officer’s NTSs in a ship bridge simulator environment. A random selection of students that have completed the Chief Mate (CM) programme was performed, and data regarding their NTS-related performance in the scenarios was collected. Finally, the collected data was fed into the evidential reasoning (ER) algorithm, utility values were produced and, having established these values, the effectiveness of the HELM training that the students have received was then evaluated
