Prospects for three-body Higgs decays into extra light scalars
Within models containing a very light scalar particle coupled to the 125 GeV Higgs boson, we present the first detailed study of Higgs decays into three of these light scalars. We determine model-independent conditions which the scalar sector after electroweak symmetry breaking has to satisfy in order for the three-body channel to become relevant. Using a specific model -- the real scalar singlet-extension of the Standard Model (SM) -- we then identify scenarios, where the rates of scalar three-body Higgs decays are comparable to or even exceed those of the well-studied two-body channel. All those scenarios are shown to be compatible with current experimental and theoretical constraints. We finally argue that scalar three-body Higgs decays lead to exciting new collider signatures with six SM fermions in the final state. Calculating the corresponding event rates, we find that e.g. six-muon or six-tau final states may be in reach of dedicated searches at the LHC or ILC experiments
The dependence of HII region properties on global and local surface brightness within galaxy discs
Using B, R, and H-alpha images of roughly equal-sized samples of low surface
brightness (LSB) and high surface brightness (HSB) galaxies (~40 galaxies
apiece), we have explored the dependence of HII region properties on local and
global disc surface brightness. We have done this by constructing co-added HII
region luminosity functions (LFs) according to local and central disc surface
brightness and fitting Schechter functions to these LFs. The results show that
the shape of the HII region LF within LSB galaxies does not change noticeably
as different limiting (i.e., mu>mu_lim) local surface brightness values are
used. However, the LFs for HSB galaxies have larger values of L_* and are less
steep at the faint-end than those of LSB galaxies for limiting B-band local
surface brightness values as faint as mu_B,lim~23-24. Both the LFs and the data
for individual HII regions show that luminous (log L>39 ergs/s) HII regions are
much more common within HSB discs than within LSB discs, implying that the
newly formed star clusters are also larger. Taking this into account along with
the results of Monte Carlo simulations, the shapes of the LFs imply that the
regions within LSB discs and those within the LSB areas of HSB discs are
relatively old (~5 Myr) while the regions within HSB discs for mu_B<24 are
significantly younger (<1 Myr). Since the majority of the LSB galaxies do not
have noticeable spiral arms and the majority of the HSB galaxies do, this may
indicate a transition within HSB discs from spiral arm-driven star formation to
a more locally driven, possibly sporadic form of star formation at mu_B~24, a
transition that does not appear to occur within LSB discs.Comment: Accepted to MNRA
Minimal Conformal Extensions of the Higgs Sector
In this work we find the minimal extension of the Standard Model's Higgs sector which can lead to a light Higgs boson via radiative symmetry breaking and is consistent with the phenomenological requirements for a low-energy realization of a conformal theory. The model which turns out to be stable under renormalization group translations is an extension of the Standard Model by two scalar fields, one of which acquires a finite vacuum expectation value and therefore mixes into the physical Higgs. We find that the minimal model predicts a sizable amount of mixing which makes it testable at a collider. In addition to the physical Higgs, the theory's scalar spectrum contains one light and one heavy boson. The heavy scalar's properties render it a potential dark matter candidate
J16021+3326: New Multi-Frequency Observations of a Complex Source
We present multifrequency Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of
J16021+3326. These observations, along with variability data obtained from the
Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) candidate gamma-ray blazar monitoring
program, clearly indicate this source is a blazar. The peculiar characteristic
of this blazar, which daunted previous classification attempts, is that we
appear to be observing down a precessing jet, the mean orientation of which is

Contemporaneous VLBA 5 GHz Observations of Large Area Telescope Detected Blazars
The radio properties of blazars detected by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope have been observed contemporaneously by the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). In total, 232 sources were observed with the VLBA. Ninety sources that were previously observed as part of the VLBA Imaging and Polarimetry Survey (VIPS) have been included in the sample, as well as 142 sources not found in VIPS. This very large, 5 GHz flux-limited sample of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) provides insights into the mechanism that produces strong γ-ray emission. In particular, we see that γ-ray emission is related to strong, uniform magnetic fields in the cores of the host AGN. Included in this sample are non-blazar AGNs such as 3C84, M82, and NGC 6251. For the blazars, the total VLBA radio flux density at 5 GHz correlates strongly with γ-ray flux. The LAT BL Lac objects tend to be similar to the non-LAT BL Lac objects, but the LAT flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) are significantly different from the non-LAT FSRQs. Strong core polarization is significantly more common among the LAT sources, and core fractional polarization appears to increase during LAT detection
Proteogenomics refines the molecular classification of chronic lymphocytic leukemia
Cancer heterogeneity at the proteome level may explain differences in therapy response and prognosis beyond the currently established genomic and transcriptomic-based diagnostics. The relevance of proteomics for disease classifications remains to be established in clinically heterogeneous cancer entities such as chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Here, we characterize the proteome and transcriptome alongside genetic and ex-vivo drug response profiling in a clinically annotated CLL discovery cohort (n = 68). Unsupervised clustering of the proteome data reveals six subgroups. Five of these proteomic groups are associated with genetic features, while one group is only detectable at the proteome level. This new group is characterized by accelerated disease progression, high spliceosomal protein abundances associated with aberrant splicing, and low B cell receptor signaling protein abundances (ASB-CLL). Classifiers developed to identify ASB-CLL based on its characteristic proteome or splicing signature in two independent cohorts (n = 165, n = 169) confirm that ASB-CLL comprises about 20% of CLL patients. The inferior overall survival in ASB-CLL is also independent of both TP53- and IGHV mutation status. Our multi-omics analysis refines the classification of CLL and highlights the potential of proteomics to improve cancer patient stratification beyond genetic and transcriptomic profiling
Characteristics of Gamma-Ray Loud Blazars in the VLBA Imaging and Polarimetry Survey
The radio properties of blazars detected by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on
board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope have been observed as part of the
VLBA Imaging and Polarimetry Survey (VIPS). This large, flux-limited sample of
active galactic nuclei (AGN) provides insights into the mechanism that produces
strong gamma-ray emission. At lower flux levels, radio flux density does not
directly correlate with gamma-ray flux. We find that the LAT-detected BL Lacs
tend to be similar to the non-LAT BL Lacs, but that the LAT-detected FSRQs are
often significantly different from the non-LAT FSRQs. The differences between
the gamma-ray loud and quiet FSRQs can be explained by Doppler boosting; these
objects appear to require larger Doppler factors than those of the BL Lacs. It
is possible that the gamma-ray loud FSRQs are fundamentally different from the
gamma-ray quiet FSRQs. Strong polarization at the base of the jet appears to be
