Echolocation by Quasiparticles
It is shown that the local density of states (LDOS), measured in an Scanning
Tunneling Microscopy (STM) experiment, at a single tip position contains
oscillations as a function of Energy, due to quasiparticle interference, which
is related to the positions of nearby scatterers. We propose a method of STM
data analysis based on this idea, which can be used to locate the scatterers.
In the case of a superconductor, the method can potentially distinguish the
nature of the scattering by a particular impurity.Comment: 4+ page
Vibration Isolation Design for the Micro-X Rocket Payload
Micro-X is a NASA-funded, sounding rocket-borne X-ray imaging spectrometer
that will allow high precision measurements of velocity structure, ionization
state and elemental composition of extended astrophysical systems. One of the
biggest challenges in payload design is to maintain the temperature of the
detectors during launch. There are several vibration damping stages to prevent
energy transmission from the rocket skin to the detector stage, which causes
heating during launch. Each stage should be more rigid than the outer stages to
achieve vibrational isolation. We describe a major design effort to tune the
resonance frequencies of these vibration isolation stages to reduce heating

Efficient tight-binding Monte Carlo structural sampling of complex materials
While recent work towards the development of tight-binding and ab-initio
algorithms has focused on molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo methods can often
lead to better results with relatively little effort. We present here a
multi-step Monte Carlo algorithm that makes use of the possibility of quickly
evaluating local energies. For the thermalization of a 1000-atom configuration
of {\it a}-Si, this algorithm gains about an order of magnitude in speed over
standard molecular dynamics. The algorithm can easily be ported to a wide range
of materials and can be dynamically optimized for a maximum efficiency.Comment: 5 pages including 3 postscript figure
Movements of bocaccio (Sebastes paucispinis) and greenspotted (S. chlorostictus) rockfishes in a Monterey submarine canyon: implications for the design of marine reserves
In August and September of 1997 and 1998, we used SCUBA techniques to surgically implant Vemco V16 series acoustic transmitters in 6 greenspotted rockfish (Sebastes chlorostictus) and 16 bocaccio (S. paucispinis) on the flank of Soquel Canyon in Monterey Bay, California. Fish were captured at depths of 100–200 m and reeled up to a depth of approximately 20 m, where a team of SCUBA divers anesthetized and surgically implanted acoustic transmitters in them. Tagged fish were released on the seafloor at the location of catch. An array of recording receivers on the seafloor enabled the tracking of horizontal and vertical fish movements for a three-month period. Greenspotted rockfish tagged in 1997 exhibited almost no vertical movement and showed limited horizontal movement. Two of these tagged fish spent more than 90% of the time in a 0.58-km2 area. Three other tagged greenspotted rockfish spent more than 60% of the time in a 1.6-km2 area but displayed frequent horizontal movements of at least 3 km. Bocaccio exhibited somewhat greater movements. Of the 16 bocaccio tagged in 1998, 10 spent less than 10% of the time in the approximately 12-km2 study area. One fish stayed in the study area for about 50% of the study time. Signals from the remaining 5 fish were recorded in the study area the entire time. Bocaccio frequently moved vertically 10–20 m and occasionally displayed vertical movements of 100 m or greater
Effect of Electron Correlation on the Bragg Reflection
We study the effect of correlation on the Bragg reflection in the 3D electron
gas, the 1D Luttinger liquid, and the 1D Hubbard model in an alternating
periodic potential at half-filling. In the last system, we suggest a
Luttinger-liquid-type quasi-metallic state in the crossover region from the
band insulator to the Mott insulator. We explain the appearance of this state
in terms of the incompatibility of the Bragg reflection with the concept of
