Syn-kinematic hydration reactions, grain size reduction, and dissolution-precipitation creep in experimentally deformed plagioclase-pyroxene mixtures
Source at https://doi.org/10.5194/se-9-985-2018 .It is widely observed that mafic rocks are able to accommodate high strains by viscous flow. Yet, a number of questions concerning the exact nature of the involved deformation mechanisms continue to be debated. In this contribution, rock deformation experiments on four different water-added plagioclaseâpyroxene mixtures are presented:(i) plagioclase(An60â70)âclinopyroxeneâorthopyroxene,(ii) plagioclase(An60)âdiopside,(iii) plagioclase(An60)âenstatite,and iv) plagioclase(An01)âenstatite. Samples were deformed in general shear at strain rates of 3Ă10â5 to 3Ă10â6 sâ1, 800°C, and confining pressure of 1.0 or 1.5GPa. Results indicate that dissolutionâprecipitation creep (DPC) and grain boundary sliding (GBS) are the dominant deformation mechanisms and operate simultaneously. Coinciding with sample deformation, syn-kinematic mineral reactions yield abundant nucleation of new grains; the resulting intense gray size reduction is considered crucial for the activity of DPC and GBS. In high strain zones dominated by plagioclase, a weak, nonrandom, and geometrically consistent crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) is observed. Usually, a CPO is considered a consequence of dislocation creep, but the experiments presented here demonstrate that a CPO can develop during DPC and GBS. This study provides new evidence for the importance of DPC and GBS in mid-crustal shear zones within mafic rocks, which has important implications for understanding and modeling mid-crustal rheology and flow
Electronic Properties of Topological Materials: Optical Excitations in Moebius Conjugated Polymers
Electronic structures and optical excitations in Moebius conjugated polymers
are studied theoretically. Periodic and Moebius boundary conditions are applied
to the tight binding model of poly(para-phenylene), taking exciton effects into
account. We discuss that oligomers with a few structural units are more
effective than polymers for observations of effects of discrete wave numbers
that are shifted by the change in boundary condition. Next, calculations of
optical absorption spectra are reported. Certain components of optical
absorption for an electric field perpendicular to the polymer axis mix with
absorption spectra for an electric field parallel to the polymer axis.
Therefore, the polarization dependences of an electric field of light enable us

Morphology of Pyramidal Neurons in the Rat Prefrontal Cortex: Lateralized Dendritic Remodeling by Chronic Stress
The prefrontal cortex (PFC) plays an important role in the stress response. We filled pyramidal neurons in PFC layer III with neurobiotin and analyzed dendrites in rats submitted to chronic restraint stress and in controls.
In the right prelimbic cortex (PL) of controls, apical and distal dendrites were longer than in the left PL. Stress reduced the total length of apical dendrites in right PL and abolished the hemispheric difference. In right infralimbic cortex (IL) of controls, proximal apical dendrites were longer than in left IL, and stress eliminated this hemispheric difference. No hemispheric difference was detected in anterior cingulate cortex (ACx) of controls, but stress reduced apical dendritic length in left ACx.
These data demonstrate interhemispheric differences in the morphology of pyramidal neurons in PL and IL of control rats and selective effects of stress on the right hemisphere. In contrast, stress reduced dendritic length in the left ACx
Water redistribution in experimentally deformed natural milky quartz single crystals-Implications for H2O-weakening processes
Natural quartz single crystals were experimentally deformed in two orientations: (1) â„ to one prism plane and (2) in O+ orientation at 900 and 1000°C, 1.0 and 1.5 GPa, and strain rates of ~1 Ă 10â6 sâ1. In addition, hydrostatic and annealing experiments were performed. The starting material was milky quartz, which consisted of dry quartz with a large number of fluid inclusions of variable size up to several 100 ”m. During pressurization fluid inclusions decrepitated producing much smaller fluid inclusions. Deformation on the sample scale is anisotropic due to dislocation glide on selected slip systems and inhomogeneous due to an inhomogeneous distribution of fluid inclusions. Dislocation glide is accompanied by minor dynamic recovery. Strongly deformed regions show a pointed broad absorption band in the ~3400 cmâ1 region consisting of a superposition of bands of molecular H2O and three discrete absorption bands (at 3367, 3400, and 3434 cmâ1). In addition, there is a discrete absorption band at 3585 cmâ1, which only occurs in deformed regions and reduces or disappears after annealing, so that this band appears to be associated with dislocations. H2O weakening in inclusion-bearing natural quartz crystals is assigned to the H2O-assisted dislocation generation and multiplication. Processes in these crystals represent recycling of H2O between fluid inclusions, cracking and crack healing, incorporation of structurally bound H in dislocations, release of H2O from dislocations during recovery, and dislocation generation at very small fluid inclusions. The H2O weakening by this process is of disequilibrium nature because it depends on the amount of H2O available.The

Genome-wide association study identifies 30 loci associated with bipolar disorder.
Bipolar disorder is a highly heritable psychiatric disorder. We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) including 20,352 cases and 31,358 controls of European descent, with follow-up analysis of 822 variants with Pâ<â1âĂâ10-4 in an additional 9,412 cases and 137,760 controls. Eight of the 19 variants that were genome-wide significant (Pâ<â5âĂâ10-8) in the discovery GWAS were not genome-wide significant in the combined analysis, consistent with small effect sizes and limited power but also with genetic heterogeneity. In the combined analysis, 30 loci were genome-wide significant, including 20 newly identified loci. The significant loci contain genes encoding ion channels, neurotransmitter transporters and synaptic components. Pathway analysis revealed nine significantly enriched gene sets, including regulation of insulin secretion and endocannabinoid signaling. Bipolar I disorder is strongly genetically correlated with schizophrenia, driven by psychosis, whereas bipolar II disorder is more strongly correlated with major depressive disorder. These findings address key clinical questions and provide potential biological mechanisms for bipolar disorder
The Hide-and-Seek of Grain Boundaries from Moire Pattern Fringe of Two-Dimensional Graphene
Grain boundaries (GBs) commonly exist in crystalline materials and affect various properties of materials. The facile identification of GBs is one of the significant requirements for systematical study of polycrystalline materials including recently emerging two-dimensional materials. Previous observations of GBs have been performed by various tools including high resolution transmission electron microscopy. However, a method to easily identify GBs, especially in the case of low-angle GBs, has not yet been well established. In this paper, we choose graphene bilayers with a GB as a model system and investigate the effects of interlayer rotations to the identification of GBs. We provide a critical condition between adjacent moire fringe spacings, which determines the possibility of GB recognition. In addition, for monolayer graphene with a grain boundary, we demonstrate that low-angle GBs can be distinguished easily by inducing moire patterns deliberately with an artificial reference overlayopen0
Bonobo personality traits are heritable and associated with vasopressin receptor gene 1a variation
Despite being closely related, bonobos and chimpanzees show remarkable behavioral differences, the proximate origins of which remain unknown. This study examined the link between behavioral variation and variation in the vasopressin 1a receptor gene (Avpr1a) in bonobos. Chimpanzees are polymorphic for a ~360âbp deletion (DupB), which includes a microsatellite (RS3) in the 5âČ promoter region of Avpr1a. In chimpanzees, the DupB deletion has been linked to lower sociability, lower social sensitivity, and higher anxiety. Chimpanzees and bonobos differ on these traits, leading some to believe that the absence of the DupB deletion in bonobos may be partly responsible for these differences, and to the prediction that similar associations between Avpr1a genotypes and personality traits should be present in bonobos. We identified bonobo personality dimensions using behavioral measures (Sociability(B), Boldness(B), Openness(B), Activity(B)) and trait ratings (Assertiveness(R), Conscientiousness(R), Openness(R), Agreeableness(R), Attentiveness(R), Extraversion(R)). In the present study we found that all 10 dimensions have nonzero heritabilities, indicating there is a genetic basis to personality, and that bonobos homozygous for shorter RS3 alleles were lower in Attentiveness(R) and higher in Openness(B). These results suggest that variations in Avpr1a genotypes explain both within and between species differences in personality traits of bonobos and chimpanzees
Characterisation of age and polarity at onset in bipolar disorder
Background Studying phenotypic and genetic characteristics of age at onset (AAO) and polarity at onset (PAO) in bipolar disorder can provide new insights into disease pathology and facilitate the development of screening tools. Aims To examine the genetic architecture of AAO and PAO and their association with bipolar disorder disease characteristics. Method Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) and polygenic score (PGS) analyses of AAO (n = 12 977) and PAO (n = 6773) were conducted in patients with bipolar disorder from 34 cohorts and a replication sample (n = 2237). The association of onset with disease characteristics was investigated in two of these cohorts. Results Earlier AAO was associated with a higher probability of psychotic symptoms, suicidality, lower educational attainment, not living together and fewer episodes. Depressive onset correlated with suicidality and manic onset correlated with delusions and manic episodes. Systematic differences in AAO between cohorts and continents of origin were observed. This was also reflected in single-nucleotide variant-based heritability estimates, with higher heritabilities for stricter onset definitions. Increased PGS for autism spectrum disorder (ÎČ = â0.34 years, s.e. = 0.08), major depression (ÎČ = â0.34 years, s.e. = 0.08), schizophrenia (ÎČ = â0.39 years, s.e. = 0.08), and educational attainment (ÎČ = â0.31 years, s.e. = 0.08) were associated with an earlier AAO. The AAO GWAS identified one significant locus, but this finding did not replicate. Neither GWAS nor PGS analyses yielded significant associations with PAO. Conclusions AAO and PAO are associated with indicators of bipolar disorder severity. Individuals with an earlier onset show an increased polygenic liability for a broad spectrum of psychiatric traits. Systematic differences in AAO across cohorts, continents and phenotype definitions introduce significant heterogeneity, affecting analyses
