Fachkommunikation – das ist zielgerichtete, gelenkte, mit optimierten Mitteln ausgeführte Kommunikation. Ihr liegt eine methodisch bewusste, kriteriengeleitete Vorgehensweise zugrunde und sie wird häufig durch lenkenden Eingriff geregelt. Hierdurch sollen sowohl die Produktion als auch die Rezeption fachkommunikativer Erzeugnisse erleichtert und damit verbessert werden. Das interdisziplinäre, mehrdimensionale Feld der Fachkommunikationswissenschaft entwickelt sich stetig weiter. Neben der klassischen Erforschung von Fachwortschätzen ist der Diskurs heute sehr breit aufgestellt. So vereint auch dieser Sammelband Ansätze zur gesamten Breite der modernen Fachkommunikationswissenschaft: von der fachbezogenen Kommunikation in Fachgemeinschaften für Laien und interfachlichen Kommunikation in interdisziplinären Projekten über Zugriffswege auf Datenbestände und Textproduktionsstrategien für Schreibende aller fachkommunikativ ausgerichteten Berufe bis hin zur linguistischen Expertise bei Gericht und dem Einbezug besonderer Zielgruppen in den Diskurs der Verständlichkeit und Brauchbarkeit fachkommunikativer Erzeugnisse

Writing Research and Specialized Communication Studies

Many research strands have a focal interest in writing as an object. Still, many representatives of these strands are not aware of the others’ existence, let alone their common ground. This paper shall serve to unveil some of the overlaps between two of the afore-mentioned research strands–or rather disciplines: Writing Research and Specialized Communication Studies. The authors outline some of the most prominent aspects concerning the evolution, the paradigms, the principles of modelling and main research lines of the disciplines, respectively, and compare them with each other. While Writing Research has been an acknowledged discipline for decades, this does not apply for Specialized Communication Studies: with its roots in LSP Studies and Translation Studies, from which it has evolved slowly but steadily, it has meanwhile become an own sphere of research, situated within the wider scope of Applied Linguistics. Today, one can claim that there is indeed the need for one independent discipline dealing with specialized communication in all its manifestations. On the basis of the afore-mentioned contrasting juxtaposition, the authors discuss what the common ground of Writing Research and Specialized Communication Studies is, where the disciplines differ, which approaches–if so–combine the two disciplines and how they may benefit from each other.&nbsp

Austrian Students’ Perceptions of Social Distancing and Their Emotional Experiences During Distance Learning Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to far-reaching changes in various aspects of students’ lives. In the particular case of the educational field, classroom teaching was drastically shifted to a distance learning format. Consequently, students needed to deal with a completely different everyday school life. Learning was carried out online, which implied that students could not see some of their regular, important social contacts such as teachers, classmates or friends. It is already proven that such social distancing measures had impacts on students’ emotional experiences during the lockdown. Following a mixed-methods concurrent single-phase design, this study examined students’ perceptions of social distancing and their emotional experiences during the first school lockdown in Austria. Data from an online survey (n = 263 students) and from qualitative interviews (n = 56 students) were analyzed. The results show that distance learning drastically reduced interaction among students and between students and their teachers. Furthermore, the results indicate negative emotional experiences due to less social contact, increased learning pressures, and less structure. However, findings revealed that students also experience and perceived positive emotional experiences during distance learning because of more freedom, autonomy, and to some extent, less performance pressure. Based on the findings, the present study discusses possible perspectives on how to support students during and after distance learning, as well as further lines of research.Peer Reviewe

Dieser Band ist eine Festschrift zum 68. Geburtstag von Klaus Schubert, der seit 30 Jahren – zunächst an der Fachhochschule Flensburg, dann an der Universität Hildesheim – als Professor im Bereich der Fachkommunikationswissenschaft starke Impulse gesetzt und das Fach nachhaltig geprägt hat. Nicht nur durch sein Modell der vier Dimensionen der Fachkommunikation, sondern auch durch umfassende Publikationstätigkeit, unerschöpfliche Einsatzbereitschaft in der Lehre und herausragendes Engagement für die Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses hat Klaus Schubert die eigenständige Disziplin der Fachkommunikationswissenschaft begründet, bekannt gemacht und fortentwickelt. Seine Studierenden, Promovierenden und Fachkolleginnen und -kollegen sind dadurch nachhaltig geprägt worden. „Fachkommunikationswissenschaft gestern, heute, morgen“ versammelt Beiträge von Klaus Schuberts ehemaligen und aktuellen Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden, Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeitern und Weggefährtinnen und Weggefährten, in denen die große Diversität der Fachkommunikationswissenschaft zum Ausdruck kommt

Occupational Health on Merchant Ships during COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic burdened the working and living conditions of seafaring personnel with particular challenges. The present study investigated the health and occupational burden of 301 multinational seafarers from merchant ships using self-administered questionnaires. The survey was carried out between September and November 2021 on the occasion of SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations at the Port of Hamburg, Germany. Participants generally reported good physical and mental health status while general burden perception increased compared to pre-pandemic levels. Three-quarters of seafarers reported experiencing shore-leave denial at least once throughout the pandemic. In summary, the study reveals the substantial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the perceived occupational burden of seafaring personnel

Eradication of chronic HCV infection: improvement of dysbiosis only in patients without liver cirrhosis.

It is well accepted that liver diseases and their outcomes are associated with intestinal microbiota but causality is difficult to establish. The intestinal microbiota is altered in patients with hepatitis C. As chronic HCV infection can now be cured in almost all patients, it is an ideal model to study the influence of liver disease on the microbiota. We aimed to analyze prospectively the changes in the gut microbiome in patients who received direct acting antivirals (DAA) and achieved sustained virological response (SVR). Amplicon sequencing of the V1-V2 region in the 16S rRNA gene was performed in stool samples of patients with chronic hepatitis C. Patients in the treatment group received direct acting antivirals (n=65) whereas in the control group no DAA were given (n=33). Only patients achieving SVR were included. The alpha diversity increased numerical but not significantly from baseline to SVR24/48 (2.784±0.248 vs. 2.846±0.224; p= 0.057). When stratifying for the presence of liver cirrhosis, a significant increase in diversity was only seen in patients without cirrhosis. Differences in the microbial community structure induced by the achievement of SVR were only observed in patients without liver cirrhosis. In patients with liver cirrhosis and in the control group, no significant differences were observed. In conclusion, the achievement of SVR24/48 in patients with chronic HCV was associated with changes in the intestinal microbiota. However, these changes were only seen in patients without liver cirrhosis. A major role of liver remodeling on the intestinal microbiota is indicated by the dynamics of the intestinal microbial community structure depending on the stage of fibrosis in patients resolving chronic hepatitis C
