    Superconducting resonators with voltage-controlled frequency and nonlinearity

    Voltage-tunable superconductor-semiconductor devices offer a unique platform to realize dynamic tunability in superconducting quantum circuits. By galvanically connecting a gated InAs-Al Josephson junction to a coplanar waveguide resonator, we demonstrate the use of a wide-range gate-tunable superconducting element. We show that the resonant frequency is controlled via a gate-tunable Josephson inductance and that the non-linearity of the voltage-controlled InAs-Al junction is non-dissipative as is the case with conventional Al-AlOx_{x} junctions. As the gate voltage is decreased, the inductive participation of the junction increases up to 44%44\%, resulting in the resonant frequency being tuned by over 2 GHz. Utilizing the wide tunability of the device, we demonstrate that two resonant modes can be adjusted such that they strongly hybridize, exhibiting an avoided level crossing with a coupling strength of 51 MHz. Implementing such voltage-tunable resonators is the first step toward realizing wafer-scale continuous voltage control in superconducting circuits for qubit-qubit coupling, quantum-limited amplifiers, and quantum memory platforms

    Anisotropic generalization of Stinchcombe's solution for conductivity of random resistor network on a Bethe lattice

    Our study is based on the work of Stinchcombe [1974 \emph{J. Phys. C} \textbf{7} 179] and is devoted to the calculations of average conductivity of random resistor networks placed on an anisotropic Bethe lattice. The structure of the Bethe lattice is assumed to represent the normal directions of the regular lattice. We calculate the anisotropic conductivity as an expansion in powers of inverse coordination number of the Bethe lattice. The expansion terms retained deliver an accurate approximation of the conductivity at resistor concentrations above the percolation threshold. We make a comparison of our analytical results with those of Bernasconi [1974 \emph{Phys. Rev. B} \textbf{9} 4575] for the regular lattice.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure

    Characterizing losses in InAs two-dimensional electron gas-based gatemon qubits

    The tunnelling of cooper pairs across a Josephson junction (JJ) allow for the nonlinear inductance necessary to construct superconducting qubits, amplifiers, and various other quantum circuits. An alternative approach using hybrid superconductor-semiconductor JJs can enable superconducting qubit architectures with all electric control. Here we present continuous-wave and time-domain characterization of gatemon qubits and coplanar waveguide resonators based on an InAs two-dimensional electron gas. We show that the qubit undergoes a vacuum Rabi splitting with a readout cavity and we drive coherent Rabi oscillations between the qubit ground and first excited states. We measure qubit relaxation times to be T1=T_1 = 100 ns over a 1.5 GHz tunable band. We detail the loss mechanisms present in these materials through a systematic study of the quality factors of coplanar waveguide resonators. While various loss mechanisms are present in III-V gatemon circuits we detail future directions in enhancing the relaxation times of qubit devices on this platform

    Correlation Between Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio, Platelets-Lymphocyte Ratio, and High-Resolution CT in Patients with COVID-19

    Background: COVID-19 is a highly infectious disease that necessitates simple and rapid methods for recognising severe patients. Aims: To correlate between chest lesions in CT, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelets-lymphocytes ratio in patients with COVID-19, and to detect their cut-off values as an early warning of severe COVID-19 in Egyptian patients. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study included 100 adult patients with COVID-19 attending Ahmed Maher Teaching Hospital, Cairo, Egypt. Clinical, laboratory, and radiological assessments were done. They were classified according to their CT grades into three groups: seven patients with a normal chest CT, 45 non-severe cases, and 48 severe cases. Results: Dyspnoea was the most common symptom among the severe cases (79.2%) and fever among non-severe cases (71.1%), while cough (85.7%) was the most common among cases with a normal CT. The age, NLR, C-reactive protein (CRP), and D-dimer of severe cases were significantly the highest, while the absolute lymphocytes were significantly the lowest. Highly significant positive correlations were found between CT grades with D-dimer, NLR, and CRP; significant positive correlation was found with age; and significant negative correlation with CT. Using receiver operating characteristic analysis, areas under the curve of D-dimer, NLR, age, CRP, ferritin, and platelet-lymphocyte ratio were 0.760, 0.698, 0.640, 0.627, 0.614, and 0.595, respectively. The optimal cut-off value of NLR was 2.50 with 0.74 specificity, 0.61 sensitivity, and 67.5 accuracy. Conclusion: NLR is a reliable and easy-to-use predictor of COVID-19 severity. NLR (>2.5) should prompt prescription of a chest CT as it could reveal essential lesions that influence further management

    The α′-acyloxylation of cyclic enones with linear carboxylic acids is described. The reaction is promoted by KMnO4 in the presence of a carboxylic acid and its corresponding carboxylic anhydride. The optimization of the reaction has been carried out using the statistical methodology known as design of experiments. The optimized reaction conditions have been evaluated in terms of substrate scope and compatibility with different functional groups. The methodology has been applied to the synthesis of densely oxygenated guaianes and guaianolides

    EPHA2 Is Associated with Age-Related Cortical Cataract in Mice and Humans

    Age-related cataract is a major cause of blindness worldwide, and cortical cataract is the second most prevalent type of age-related cataract. Although a significant fraction of age-related cataract is heritable, the genetic basis remains to be elucidated. We report that homozygous deletion of Epha2 in two independent strains of mice developed progressive cortical cataract. Retroillumination revealed development of cortical vacuoles at one month of age; visible cataract appeared around three months, which progressed to mature cataract by six months. EPHA2 protein expression in the lens is spatially and temporally regulated. It is low in anterior epithelial cells, upregulated as the cells enter differentiation at the equator, strongly expressed in the cortical fiber cells, but absent in the nuclei. Deletion of Epha2 caused a significant increase in the expression of HSP25 (murine homologue of human HSP27) before the onset of cataract. The overexpressed HSP25 was in an underphosphorylated form, indicating excessive cellular stress and protein misfolding. The orthologous human EPHA2 gene on chromosome 1p36 was tested in three independent worldwide Caucasian populations for allelic association with cortical cataract. Common variants in EPHA2 were found that showed significant association with cortical cataract, and rs6678616 was the most significant in meta-analyses. In addition, we sequenced exons of EPHA2 in linked families and identified a new missense mutation, Arg721Gln, in the protein kinase domain that significantly alters EPHA2 functions in cellular and biochemical assays. Thus, converging evidence from humans and mice suggests that EPHA2 is important in maintaining lens clarity with age

    Radionuclide Imaging of Viable Myocardium: Is it Underutilized?

    Coronary artery disease is the major cause of heart failure in North America. Viability assessment is important as it aims to identify patients who stand to benefit from coronary revascularization. Radionuclide modalities currently used in the assessment of viability include 201Tl SPECT, 99mTc-based SPECT imaging, and 18F-fluorodexoyglucose (18F-FDG)-PET imaging. Different advances have been made in the last year to improve the sensitivity and specificity of these modalities. In addition, the optimum amount of viable (yet dysfunctional) myocardium is important to identify in patients, as a risk–benefit ratio must be considered. Patients with predominantly viable/hibernating myocardium can benefit from revascularization from a mortality and morbidity standpoint. However, in patients with minimal viability (predominantly scarred myocardium), revascularization risk may certainly be too high to justify revascularization without expected benefit. Understanding different radionuclide modalities and new developments in the assessment of viability in ischemic heart failure patients is the focus of this discussion

    A randomised controlled trial investigating the effect of nutritional supplementation on visual function in normal, and age-related macular disease affected eyes: design and methodology [ISRCTN78467674]

    BACKGROUND: Age-related macular disease is the leading cause of blind registration in the developed world. One aetiological hypothesis involves oxidation, and the intrinsic vulnerability of the retina to damage via this process. This has prompted interest in the role of antioxidants, particularly the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, in the prevention and treatment of this eye disease. METHODS: The aim of this randomised controlled trial is to determine the effect of a nutritional supplement containing lutein, vitamins A, C and E, zinc, and copper on measures of visual function in people with and without age-related macular disease. Outcome measures are distance and near visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, colour vision, macular visual field, glare recovery, and fundus photography. Randomisation is achieved via a random number generator, and masking achieved by third party coding of the active and placebo containers. Data collection will take place at nine and 18 months, and statistical analysis will employ Student's t test. DISCUSSION: A paucity of treatment modalities for age-related macular disease has prompted research into the development of prevention strategies. A positive effect on normals may be indicative of a role of nutritional supplementation in preventing or delaying onset of the condition. An observed benefit in the age-related macular disease group may indicate a potential role of supplementation in prevention of progression, or even a degree reversal of the visual effects caused by this condition
