    Die Carabidenfauna in einem extensiv genutzten GrĂĽnlandbereich westlich des DĂĽmmers

    1993/94 wurde die Carabidenfauna in einem extensiv genutzten Feuchtgrünlandbereich westlich des Dümmers (Niedersachsen, Nordwestdeutschland) mittels der Barberfallen- Fangmethode und der Quadratmethode entlang eines Feuchtegradienten erfaßt. 50 Laufkäferarten und 2 Carabidenzänosen wurden festgestellt. Charakteristische Carabiden für das Caricetum gracilis am Dümmer sind Pterostichus rhaeticus, Pt. minor; Agonum afrum, Ag. viduum, Ag. fuliginosum und Oodes helopioides. In dem Lolio-Cynosuretum und dem Ranunculo repentis-Alopecuretum geniculati wurden Clivina fossor; Poecilus versicolor; Pterostichus verna/is und Pt. anthracinus gefunden. Weitere Arten wie Carabus granulatus, Loricera pilicornis, Dyschirius globosus, Pterostichus diligens und Pt. nigrita wurden entlang des gesamten Gradienten gefangen. Die Habitatpräferenzen ausgewählter Arten werden diskutiert.In 1993/94 the carabid fauna of an extensively used wet grassland near the lake Dümmer (Lower Saxony, north-west Germany) was researched using pitfall traps and the quadrat sampling method along a gradient of moisture. 50 carabid species and two assemblages were detected. Characteristic carabids of the Caricetum gracilis near the lake are Pterostichus rhaeticus, Pt. minor; Agonum afrum, Ag. viduum, Ag. fuliginosum and Oodes helopioides. Clivina fossor; Poecilus versicolor; Pterostichus vernalis and Pt. anthracinus were found. In the Lolio-Cynosuretum and the Ranunculo repentis-Alopecuretum geniculati. Further species like Carabus granulatus, Loricera pilicornis, Dyschirius globosus, Pterostichus diligens and Pt. nigrita were recorded - along the whole gradient.     Klonierung von O-Methyltransferasen zur Furanocumarinbiosynthese in Ammi majus L.

    Vertreter der Apiaceae oder Rutaceae akkumulieren methoxylierte Psoralene wie Bergapten oder Xanthotoxin als Endprodukte der Furanocumarinbiosynthese. O-Methyltransferase-Aktivitäten mit Umsetzungen von Bergaptol zu Bergapten bzw. Xanthotoxol zu Xanthotoxin wurden bereits aus induzierten Zellkultursystemen von Ruta graveolens, Petroselinum crispum und Ammi majus beschrieben. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde die Bergaptol 5-O-Methyltransferase (BMT) als erstes Enzym der Furanocumarinbiosynthese aus Ammi majus L. in ihrer cDNA und Aminosäuresequenz aufgeklärt und biochemisch charakterisiert. Das translatierte Polypeptid zeigte hohe Sequenzhomologien zu heterologen Kaffeesäure 3-O-Methyltransferasen (COMTs). Daher wurde zum Sequenzvergleich eine COMT aus Ammi majus L. Pflanzen kloniert, die 64% Identität zur BMT auf Aminosäureebene aufweist. Die funktionelle Expression beider Enzyme in Escherichia coli zeigte, dass die BMT Aktivität in bakteriellen Rohextrakten labil ist und beim Anreinigen verloren geht. Die COMT Aktivität dahingegen bleibt stabil. Während die BMT eine hohe Spezifität für ihr Substrat Bergaptol aufweist, methyliert die COMT 5-Hydroxyferulasäure, Esculetin und weitere Substrate. Die BMT-Sequenz aus Ammi majus stellt einen neuen spezifischen Zugang auf molekularer Ebene zur Biosynthese der Furanocumarine dar

    Quiet engine program: Turbine noise suppression. -Volume 1: General treatment evaluation and measurement techniques

    Acoustic treatment was developed for jet engine turbine noise suppression. Acoustic impedance and duct transmission loss measurements were made for various suppression systems. An environmental compatibility study on several material types having suppression characteristics is presented. Two sets of engine hardware were designed and are described along with engine test results which include probe, farfield, near field, and acoustic directional array data. Comparisons of the expected and the measured suppression levels are given as well as a discussion of test results and design techniques

    The Protomedicato Tribunal and minorities in Castile at the end of the 17th century: the case of surgeon Roldán Solimán

    [EN] This note aims to provide a small set of documents which report the vicissitudes of a North-African Muslim surgeon who tried to settle professionally during the late seventeenth century in the Kingdom of Castile. The four letters exchanged between the Royal Palace and the Castilian tribunal of the Protomedicato reveal that the Spanish king Charles II (1661-1700) resoluted supported the surgeon's aspirations, and the Protomedicato's concerted resistence to the royal will. These eloquent documents shed light on the history of the Castilian Protomedicato during the final years of the reign of the last Habsburg king in Spain by providing evidence about the role of this institution in the process of segregation/exclusion of ethnic minorities from the practice of health professions.[ES] El objeto de esta nota es presentar y editar una colección documental muy breve cuyo contenido nos informa sobre las vicisitudes de un cirujano musulmán norteafricano que a finales del siglo XVII busca su asentamiento profesional en la Corona de Castilla. Las cuatro cartas entre el Palacio Real y el Tribunal del Protomedicato, que se conservan en relación a este asunto, revelan tanto el decidido apoyo del Rey Carlos 11 (1665-1700) a las pretensiones del cirujano, como la fuerte resistencia ofrecida por el Protomedicato a la voluntad real. Esta expresiva documentación arroja luz en torno a la historia del Protomedicato en la Corona de Castilla durante los años finales del reinado del último Habsburgo en España, ilustrándonos sobre el papel entonces jugado por esta institución en el proceso de segregación/exclusión de las minorías étnicas, de la práctica de las ocupaciones sanitarias.Peer reviewe

    Process development in Hansenula polymorpha and Arxula adeninivorans, a re-assessment

    A range of industrial H. polymorpha-based processes exist, most of them for the production of pharmaceuticals. The established industrial processes lean on the use of promoters derived from MOX and FMD, genes of the methanol metabolism pathway. In Hansenula polymorpha these promoters are de-repressed upon depletion of a range of carbon sources like glucose and glycerol instead of being induced by methanol as reported for other methylotrophs. Due to these characteristics screening and fermentation modes have been defined for strains harbouring such expression control elements that lean on a limited supplementation of glycerol or glucose to a culture medium. For fermentation of H. polymorpha a synthetic minimal medium (SYN6) has been developed. No industrial processes have been developed so far based on Arxula adeninivorans and only a limited range of strong promoter elements exists, suitable for heterologous gene expression. SYN6 originally designed for H. polymorpha provided a suitable basis for the initial definition of fermentation conditions for this dimorphic yeast. Characteristics like osmo- and thermotolerance can be addressed for the definition of culture conditions

    Molecular cytogenetic characterization of a critical region in bands 7q35-q36 commonly deleted in malignant myeloid disorders

    Loss of chromosome 7 (-7) or deletion of the long arm (7q-) are recurring chromosome abnormalities in myeloid leukemias. The association of - 7/7q- with myeloid leukemia suggests that these regions contain novel tumor suppressor gene(s), whose loss of function contribute to leukemic transformation or tumor progression. Based on chromosome banding analysis, two critical regions have been identified, one in band q22 and another in bands q32-q35. Presently there are no data available on the molecular delineation of the distal critical region. In this study we analyzed bone marrow and blood samples from 13 patients with myeloid leukemia (de novo myelodysplastic syndrome [MDS], n=3; de novo acute myeloid leukemia [AML], n=9; therapy-related (t-) AML, n=1) which, on chromosome banding analysis, exhibited deletions (n=12) or in one case a balanced translocation involving bands 7q31-qter using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). As probes we used representative clones from a contig map of yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) clones that spans chromosome bands 7q31.1-qter. In the 12 cases with loss of 7q material, we identified a commonly deleted region of approximately 4 to 5 megabasepairs in size encompassing the distal part of 7q35 and the proximal part of 7q36. Furthermore, the breakpoint of the reciprocal translocation from the patient with t-AML was localized to a 1,300-kb sized YAC clone that maps to the proximal boundary of the commonly deleted region. Interestingly, in this case both homologs of chromosome 7 were affected: one was lost (-7) and the second exhibited the t(7q35). The identification and delineation of translocation and deletion breakpoints provides the first step toward the identification of the gene(s) involved in the pathogenesis of 7q35-q36 aberrations in myeloid disorders.link_to_OA_fulltex

    On the Suitability of Estelle for Multimedia Systems

    Formal Description Techniques have been widely used for the specification of traditional networked applications. They have not been applied to the specification of new applications such as multimedia systems yet. In this paper, we examine the FDT Estelle with respect to its suitability for multimedia system specification and automatic derivation of efficient implementations. We show that it is possible to specify certain aspects of multimedia systems, but that Estelle is not sufficient for others. The derived implementations often perform badly. We show the reasons and propose to use a slightly modified Estelle syntax and semantics to solve the problems. The implemented solution was tested successfully
