Presence metadata in the Internet of Things challenges and opportunities
The Internet of Things is an emerging computing paradigm that promises to revolutionise society. The
widespread capture and aggregation of data from sensors and smart devices combined with processing using
machine learning in cloud computing platforms provides unrivalled insights into our environment. In addition
to the numerous benefits (smart healthcare, cities, transportation, etc.) such insights potentially jeopardise the
privacy of individuals, organisations, and society as whole. This is despite UK and EU regulations attempting
to mitigate the risk of individuals’ data exposure and the impact of it on their security. To demonstrate the
exploitation of metadata and its threat to privacy, this paper presents Meta-Blue, a Bluetooth Low Energy
metadata capture, analysis, and visualisation tool. The results of a case study are combined with an overview
of literature on IoT privacy to provide a holistic overview of the challenges and opportunities presented by
IoT metadata
Flight performance of a navigation, guidance, and control system concept for automatic approach and landing of space shuttle orbiter
Unpowered automatic approaches and landings were conducted to study navigation, guidance, and control problems associated with terminal area approach and landing for the space shuttle vehicle. The flight tests were performed in a Convair 990 aircraft equipped with a digital flight control computer connected to the aircraft control system and displays. The tests were designed to evaluate the performance of a navigation and guidance concept that utilized blended radio/inertial navigation with VOR, DME, and ILS as the ground navigation aids. Results from 36 automatic approaches and landings from 11,300 m (37,000 ft) to touchdown are presented. Preliminary results indicate that this concept may provide sufficient accuracy to accomplish automatic landing of the shuttle orbiter without air-breathing engines
The Theoretical Astrophysical Observatory: Cloud-Based Mock Galaxy Catalogues
We introduce the Theoretical Astrophysical Observatory (TAO), an online
virtual laboratory that houses mock observations of galaxy survey data. Such
mocks have become an integral part of the modern analysis pipeline. However,
building them requires an expert knowledge of galaxy modelling and simulation
techniques, significant investment in software development, and access to high
performance computing. These requirements make it difficult for a small
research team or individual to quickly build a mock catalogue suited to their
needs. To address this TAO offers access to multiple cosmological simulations
and semi-analytic galaxy formation models from an intuitive and clean web
interface. Results can be funnelled through science modules and sent to a
dedicated supercomputer for further processing and manipulation. These modules
include the ability to (1) construct custom observer light-cones from the
simulation data cubes; (2) generate the stellar emission from star formation
histories, apply dust extinction, and compute absolute and/or apparent
magnitudes; and (3) produce mock images of the sky. All of TAO's features can
be accessed without any programming requirements. The modular nature of TAO

Exploring the psychological rewards of a familiar semirural landscape: connecting to local nature through a mindful approach
This study analyses a 53,000 word diary of a year engaging with nature through over 200 trips to a semi-rural landscape. Thematic analysis revealed two themes; the transition from observer to nature connectedness and the ways in which the natural environment was experienced once a connection was made. These themes are discussed in relation to theories that seek to explain the positive effect of nature and nature connectedness. The findings are important as they suggest that repeated engagement with local semi-rural countryside can lead to a mindful approach and psychological rewards that do not require travel into the wilderness. The work informs further research into outcomes and processes of nature based interventions such as: trip frequency, duration and diary keeping
Visuo-spatial ability in colonoscopy simulator training
Visuo-spatial ability is associated with a quality of performance in a variety of surgical and medical skills. However, visuo-spatial ability is typically assessed using Visualization tests only, which led to an incomplete understanding of the involvement of visuo-spatial ability in these skills. To remedy this situation, the current study investigated the role of a broad range of visuo-spatial factors in colonoscopy simulator training. Fifteen medical trainees (no clinical experience in colonoscopy) participated in two psycho-metric test sessions to assess four visuo-spatial ability factors. Next, participants trained flexible endoscope manipulation, and navigation to the cecum on the GI Mentor II simulator, for four sessions within 1 week. Visualization, and to a lesser degree Spatial relations were the only visuo-spatial ability factors to correlate with colonoscopy simulator performance. Visualization additionally covaried with learning rate for time on task on both simulator tasks. High Visualization ability indicated faster exercise completion. Similar to other endoscopic procedures, performance in colonoscopy is positively associated with Visualization, a visuo-spatial ability factor characterized by the ability to mentally manipulate complex visuo-spatial stimuli. The complexity of the visuo-spatial mental transformations required to successfully perform colonoscopy is likely responsible for the challenging nature of this technique, and should inform training- and assessment design. Long term training studies, as well as studies investigating the nature of visuo-spatial complexity in this domain are needed to better understand the role of visuo-spatial ability in colonoscopy, and other endoscopic techniques
Embedding effective depression care: using theory for primary care organisational and systems change
Background: depression and related disorders represent a significant part of general practitioners (GPs) daily work. Implementing the evidence about what works for depression care into routine practice presents a challenge for researchers and service designers. The emerging consensus is that the transfer of efficacious interventions into routine practice is strongly linked to how well the interventions are based upon theory and take into account the contextual factors of the setting into which they are to be transferred. We set out to develop a conceptual framework to guide change and the implementation of best practice depression care in the primary care setting.Methods: we used a mixed method, observational approach to gather data about routine depression care in a range of primary care settings via: audit of electronic health records; observation of routine clinical care; and structured, facilitated whole of organisation meetings. Audit data were summarised using simple descriptive statistics. Observational data were collected using field notes. Organisational meetings were audio taped and transcribed. All the data sets were grouped, by organisation, and considered as a whole case. Normalisation Process Theory (NPT) was identified as an analytical theory to guide the conceptual framework development.Results: five privately owned primary care organisations (general practices) and one community health centre took part over the course of 18 months. We successfully developed a conceptual framework for implementing an effective model of depression care based on the four constructs of NPT: coherence, which proposes that depression work requires the conceptualisation of boundaries of who is depressed and who is not depressed and techniques for dealing with diffuseness; cognitive participation, which proposes that depression work requires engagement with a shared set of techniques that deal with depression as a health problem; collective action, which proposes that agreement is reached about how care is organised; and reflexive monitoring, which proposes that depression work requires agreement about how depression work will be monitored at the patient and practice level. We describe how these constructs can be used to guide the design and implementation of effective depression care in a way that can take account of contextual differences.Conclusions: ideas about what is required for an effective model and system of depression care in primary care need to be accompanied by theoretically informed frameworks that consider how these can be implemented. The conceptual framework we have presented can be used to guide organisational and system change to develop common language around each construct between policy makers, service users, professionals, and researchers. A comparison of remote therapy, face to face therapy and an attention control intervention for people with aphasia: A quasi-randomised controlled feasibility study
Objective: To test the feasibility of a Randomised Controlled Trial comparing face to face and remotely delivered word finding therapy for people with aphasia
Design: A quasi-randomised controlled feasibility study comparing remote therapy delivered from a University lab, remote therapy delivered from a clinical site, face to face therapy and an attention control condition
Setting: A University lab and NHS outpatient service
Participants: Twenty-one people with aphasia following left hemisphere stroke
Interventions: Eight sessions of word finding therapy, delivered either face to face or remotely, were compared to an attention control condition comprising eight sessions of remotely delivered supported conversation. The remote conditions used mainstream video conferencing technology.
Outcome measures: Feasibility was assessed by recruitment and attrition rates, participant observations and interviews, and treatment fidelity checking. Effects of therapy on word retrieval were assessed by tests of picture naming and naming in conversation.
Results: Twenty-one participants were recruited over 17 months, with one lost at baseline. Compliance and satisfaction with the intervention was good. Treatment fidelity was high for both remote and face to face delivery (1251/1421 therapist behaviours were compliant with the protocol). Participants who received therapy improved on picture naming significantly more than controls (mean numerical gains: 20.2 (remote from University); 41 (remote from clinical site); 30.8 (face to face); 5.8 (attention control); p <.001). There were no significant differences between groups in the assessment of conversation.
Conclusions: Word finding therapy can be delivered via mainstream internet video conferencing. Therapy improved picture naming, but not naming in conversation

Detecting genetic regions associated with height in the native ponies of the British Isles by using high density SNP genotyping
Height is an important characteristic in the equine industry, although little is known about its genetic control in native British breeds of ponies. This study aimed to map QTL data with the withers height in four pony breeds native to the British Isles, including two different sections within Welsh Cobs. In this study, a genome-wide analysis approach using the Illumina Equine SNP50 Infinium BeadChip was applied to 105 ponies and cobs. Analysis identified 222 highly significant height-associated SNPs (P < 10-5), among which three SNPs on ECA9 have also been previously reported elsewhere. The highest number of significant SNPs associated to height in the native British horses were located on ECA1, ECA8 and ECA16
