The main interest of this essay is the analysis of the document from the State Archive in Venice (file: Capi del Consiglio de’ Dieci: Lettere di Rettori e di altre cariche) which is connected with the episode from 1748 when the inhabitants of the village Žrnove on the island of Korčula in Croatia opened tombs on the local cemetery in the fear of the vampires treating. This essay try to show some social circumstances connected with this event as well as a local vernacular tradition concerning superstitions

    Rituximab in pemphigus.

International audiencePemphigus is a severe autoimmune blistering disease mediated by pathogenic anti-desmoglein antibodies leading to an inter keratinocyte disjunction. Rituximab is a monoclonal antibody that binds to the CD-20 antigen of B lymphocytes, which causes B-cell depletion and a subsequent reduction in pathogenic autoantibodies. Its therapeutic role in pemphigus has been progressively growing with increasing evidence of successful outcomes. Rituximab was initially off-labeled used as an alternative in patients with recalcitrant or relapsing pemphigus and in patients with contraindications to systemic corticosteroids. Recently, a large randomized clinical trial has shown that first-line use of rituximab combined with short-term prednisone regimen was both more effective and potentially safer than a standard regimen of high doses of corticosteroids in patients with moderate to severe pemphigus

Bullous pemphigoid, a dermatosis of the elderly

International audienceBullous pemphigoid, a dermatosis of the elderly. Bullous pemphigoid is the most common autoimmune bullous disease and affects almost exclusively the elderly. Its occurrence is related to the presence of pathogenic autoantibodies directed against structural proteins (BP180 and BP230) of the protein adhesion complex of the dermo-epidermal junction: the hemi-desmosome. Bullous pemphigoid is classically characterized by pruritus and the appearance of blisters on an inflammatory background with a symmetrical topography: thighs, arms and trunk. Blisters eventually break, leading to erosions. Mucosal involvement is rare. Histology of a cutaneous biopsy finds a subepidermal blister containing eosinophils. Direct immunofluorescence confirms the diagnosis by the presence of linear deposits of IgG and C3 along the epidermal basement membrane. The reference treatment is the superpotent topical corticosteroid therapy (clobetasol propionate)

Senegal, a new potential endemic country for Buruli ulcer?

    No full text
International audienceMycobacterium ulcerans is the causal agent of Buruli ulcer, a neglected tropical disease with cutaneous tropism. We report a case of Buruli ulcer in a patient who travelled in Senegal, a country not identified by the World Health Organization as being endemic for this disease. This case is the third case of Buruli ulcer reported as having been contracted in Senegal, showing the urgent need to develop data collection in this country by having an active community-based surveillance-response system
