Bamboo reinforced concrete: a critical review

The use of small diameter whole-culm (bars) and/or split bamboo (a.k.a. splints or round strips) has often been proposed as an alternative to relatively expensive reinforcing steel in reinforced concrete. The motivation for such replacement is typically cost—bamboo is readily available in many tropical and sub-tropical locations, whereas steel reinforcement is relatively more expensive—and more recently, the drive to find more sustainable alternatives in the construction industry. This review addresses such ‘bamboo-reinforced concrete’ and assesses its structural and environmental performance as an alternative to steel reinforced concrete. A prototype three bay portal frame, that would not be uncommon in regions of the world where bamboo-reinforced concrete may be considered, is used to illustrate bamboo reinforced concrete design and as a basis for a life cycle assessment of the same. The authors conclude that, although bamboo is a material with extraordinary mechanical properties, its use in bamboo-reinforced concrete is an ill-considered concept, having significant durability, strength and stiffness issues, and does not meet the environmentally friendly credentials often attributed to it
Retinal ganglion cell density of the black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis): Calculating visual resolution
A single right retina from a black rhinoceros was whole mounted, stained and analyzed to determine the visual resolution of the rhinoceros, an animal with reputedly poor eyesight. A range of small (15-microm diameter) to large (100-microm diameter) ganglion cell types was seen across the retina. We observed two regions of high density of retinal ganglion cells at either end of a long, but thin, horizontal streak. The temporal specialization, which receives light from the anterior visual field, exhibited a ganglion cell density of approximately 2000/mm2, while the nasal specialization exhibited a density of approximately 1500/mm2. The retina exhibited a ganglion cell density bias toward the upper half, especially so, the upper temporal quadrant, indicating that the rhinoceros would be processing visual information from the visual field below the anterior horizon for the most part. Our calculations indicate that the rhinoceros has a visual resolution of 6 cycles/degree. While this resolution is one-tenth that of humans (60 cycles/deg) and less than that of the domestic cat (9 cycles/deg), it is comparable to that of the rabbit (6 cycles/deg), and exceeds that seen in a variety of other mammals including seals, dolphins, microbats, and rats. Thus, the reputation of the rhinoceros as a myopic, weakly visual animal is not supported by our observations of the retina. We calculate that the black rhinoceros could readily distinguish a 30 cm wide human at a distance of around 200 m given the appropriate visual background
Role of Caspase 1 in Murine Antibacterial Host Defenses and Lethal Endotoxemia
Sepsis is thought to result from an exaggerated innate immune response to microbial components such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS), but the involvement of a specific mechanism(s) has not been identified. We studied the role of caspase 1 (Cas-1) in the murine innate immune response to infection with gram-negative bacteria and to nonlethal and lethal doses of LPS. cas-1(−/−) and Cas-1 inhibitor (Ac-YVAD-CHO)-treated cas-1(+/+) mice were two- to threefold more susceptible to lethal Escherichia coli infection than cas-1(+/+) mice. Administration of Cas-1 products, interleukin-18 (IL-18) or IL-1β, protected three of three and six of seven mice, respectively, from lethal infection with E. coli compared to none of six of untreated mice (P = 0.0082). Therefore, cas-1 is essential for antibacterial host defense. Nonlethal (75 μg) and lethal (500 μg) doses of LPS induce different patterns of gamma interferon, IL-1β, and IL-18 expression. Consequently, the role of Cas-1, which cleaves pro-IL-18 and pro-IL-1β to their active forms, was investigated in these disparate conditions by using enzymatic assay and reverse transcription-PCR. At 75 μg, LPS induced a transient increase in IL-1β and IL-18 levels in serum, whereas at 500 μg it induced a 1.5-fold-higher IL-18 level in serum, which increased till death. At 75 μg of LPS, splenic cas-1 mRNA expression remained unchanged at all time points, but activity increased transiently at 3 h. In lethally treated mice, Cas-1 activity remained elevated until death; however, cas-1 mRNA levels increased at 3 h and decreased to basal levels by 8 h. Treatment with Cas-1 inhibitor protected mice from lethal endotoxemia. Thus, Cas-1 is essential for innate antibacterial host defenses and may represent a mechanism of innate immunity that upon excessive stimulation by microbial components may lead to endotoxic shock
