    Digital micromirror devices for laser-based manufacturing

    Digital Micromirror Devices (DMDs), containing arrays of around one million individually-controllable ~10µm square mirrors, provide an extremely cost-effective and practical method to modulate the spatial beam profile of a pulsed laser source for both additive and subtractive laser processing and printing. When demagnified by a factor of ~100 in one dimension (hence ~10,000 in area) a ~1mJ/cm2 laser pulse reflected from the mirrors on the DMD surface that are switched to the 'on' position, attains a fluence of ~10J/cm2 at the workpiece, which is more than sufficient to ablate most materials of interest to the laser-manufacturing community. More familiar in the context of high values of magnification by the laser projection industry, reversing the role to use them for equally high values of demagnification opens up a wealth of possibilities for ablation, multiphoton polymerization, security marking and fabrication of features that perhaps surprisingly can be well below the wavelength of the laser used. Of key relevance is that very high-resolution patterning can be achieved by a single laser pulse, and step-and-repeat processes, when combined with the refresh rates of the DMD pattern that are currently at the 30kHz level, open up the possibility of processing areas of up to 1cm2 per second with micron-scale resolution where each ~100µm x 100µm area patterned per pulse can display arbitrary pixelated content. We will discuss the application of DMD-baser laser processing to the following areas of interest to the laser-manufacturing community

    Attitudes of private general practitioners towards health care in South Africa

    The need for health care reform in South Africa is acknowledged by the govermnent as well as by the non-governmental health sector. There is, however, no unanimity regarding the nature of the envisaged reform. A country-wide postal survey of 700 private sector general practitioners (GPs) from a commercial database of 5 000 was conducted to explore attitudes towards health care. A response rate of 67,4% was obtained. Respondents were mostly male (92%) and urban-based (64%). The median age was 42 years. Most respondents:(i) believed health care to be a right for all citizens; (ii) favoured private or a combination of private and public funding mechanisms with fee-for-service arrangements; (iii) opposed cost-containment measures imposed by funders, e.g. medical aids; and (iv) believed doctors should be responsible for primary care in under-served areas. After sex, age, location (urban versus rural) and GP postgraduate qualification had been controlled for by means of logistic regression techniques, the university at which a respondent's basic degree was obtained emerged as the only independent predictor of attitudes to the following: (i) comprehensive care as a right; (ii) integration of the public and private sectors; (iii) preferred funding source for a future health system; and (iv) preference for fee-for-service remuneration. Both university and gender independently predicted attitudes on GPs' income. Graduates of white, Afrikaans-medium universities were strongly in favour of a privately funded and fee-for-service orientated system. Those who qualified at black universities, on the other hand, favoured public funding with less emphasis on fee-for-service. White, English university graduates, while expressing a preference for fee-for-service remuneration, were less enthusiastic about private funding, favouring a mixed funding approach (private and public) instead. This is the first systematic study of GP attitudes to health care in South Africa. Further research is recommended to understand the significance of the attitudes expressed and to investigate the role of the university medical school and other factors in practitioners' attitudes to health care

    The laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) of thin films is an attractive technique to deposit materials on a size scale that can span nanometres to millimeters. During LIFT, the energy of a laser pulse is absorbed in a small volume of a thin film (donor) causing an explosive expansion which is used to propel a portion of the donor away from the carrier substrate and transfer it onto a receiver substrate as shown in Fig.1(a). Ultrashort laser systems can limit laser damage to remaining areas of the donor usually present using laser systems with longer (nanosecond) pulse widths

    Presence of antibodies to canine distemper virus, canine parvovirus and canine adenovirus type 1 in free-ranging jackals (Canis adustus and Canis mesomelas) in Zimbabwe

    A survey of free-ranging jackals (Canis adustus and Canis mesomelas) in Zimbabwe was conducted to determine the prevalence of serum antibodies to canine distemper virus (CDV), canine parvovirus (CPV) and canine adenovirus type 1 (CAV-1). Sera from 16 Canis adustus and 22 Canis mesomelas were collected from 1990 to 1993 from various regions of Zimbabwe and assayed by means of immunofluorescent techniques. Seroprevalence in C. adustus and C. mesomelas respectively were 50% and 63,6% for CDV, 12,5% and 18,2% for CPV and 37,5 and 9,1 for CAV-1. These results demonstrate that jackals are infected with these viruses and may act as reservoirs of them, although their susceptibility to the viruses is not known.The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi.     Diving deep into digital literacy:emerging methods for research

    Literacy studies approaches have tended to adopt a position which enables ethnographic explorations of a wide range of ‘literacies’. An important issue arising is the new challenge required for researchers to capture, manage, and analyse data that highlight the unique character of practices around texts in digital environments. Such inquiries, we argue, require multiple elements of data to be captured and analysed as part of effective literacy ethnographies. These include such things as the unfolding of digital texts, the activities around them, and features of the surrounding social and material environment. This paper addresses these methodological issues drawing from three educationally focused studies, and reporting their experiences and insights within uniquely different contexts. We deal with the issue of adopting new digital methods for literacy research through the notion of a ‘deep dive’ to explore educational tasks in classrooms. Through a discussion of how we approached the capture and analysis of our data, we present methods to better understand digital literacies in education. We then outline challenges posed by our methods, how they can be used more broadly for researching interaction in digital environments, and how they augment transdisciplinary debates and trends in research methods

    Determinants of disease penetrance in PRPF31-associated retinopathy

    Retinitis pigmentosa 11 (RP11) is caused by dominant mutations in PRPF31, however a significant proportion of mutation carriers do not develop retinopathy. Here, we investigated the relationship between CNOT3 polymorphism, MSR1 repeat copy number and disease penetrance in RP11 patients and non-penetrant carriers (NPCs). We further characterized PRPF31 and CNOT3 expression in fibroblasts from eight RP11 patients and one NPC from a family carrying the c.1205C>T variant. Retinal organoids (ROs) and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) were differentiated from induced pluripotent stem cells derived from RP11 patients, an NPC and a control subject. All RP11 patients were homozygous for the 3-copy MSR1 repeat in the PRPF31 promoter, while 3/5 NPCs carried a 4-copy MSR1 repeat. The CNOT3 rs4806718 genotype did not correlate with disease penetrance. PRFP31 expression declined with age in adult cadaveric retina. PRPF31 and CNOT3 expression was reduced in RP11 fibroblasts, RO and RPE compared with controls. Both RP11 and NPC RPE displayed shortened primary cilia compared with controls, however a subpopulation of cells with normal cilia lengths was present in NPC RPE monolayers. Our results indicate that RP11 non-penetrance is associated with the inheritance of a 4-copy MSR1 repeat, but not with CNOT3 polymorphisms

    A novel length back-calculation approach accounting for ontogenetic changes in the fish length – otolith size relationship during the early life of sprat (Sprattus sprattus)

    (Sprattus sprattus), accounting for ontogenetic changes in the relationship between fish length and otolith length. In sprat, metamorphosis from larvae to juveniles is characterized by the coincidence of low length growth, strong growth in body height, and maximal otolith growth. Consequently, the method identifies a point of metamorphosis for an individual as the otolith radius at maximum increment widths. By incorporating this information in our back-calculation method, estimated length growth for the early larval stage was more than 60% higher compared with the result of the biological intercept model. After minimal length growth during metamorphosis, we found the highest increase in length during the early juvenile stage. We thus located the strongest growth potential in the early juvenile stage, which is supposed to be critical in determining recruitment strength in Baltic sprat

The model was built using human interpreted featrues including some BI-RADS standardized features for diagnosing the malignant masses. It was compared with the diagnosis using only assessment categorization from BI-RADS. The research aims at assisting radiologists to diagnose the malignancy of breast cancer in a way without using automated computer aided diagnosis system
