    Effectiveness of Studying When Coupled with Exercise-Induced Arousal

The basis of learning is knowledge of discrete information such as terms and definitions that can be developed through memorization. A strong knowledge base is something students strive to develop through self-directed study. Little research has investigated the role of simultaneous exercise and memorization on recall ability with a delay in recall of at least 24 hrs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of an exercise bout on memory by requiring participants to recall words 24 hrs after exposure to three different interventions: memorization while cycling, memorization after cycling, and memorization without cycling. 21 physically active young adults completed the crossover design in randomized order. During testing sessions, participants were given a unique list of 100 words and were instructed to memorize as many words as possible. They returned 24 hrs later to recall the words. The average number of words recalled for each intervention were: memorization while cycling, 51.5 ± 19.8 words; memorization after cycling, 45.1 ± 22.4 words; memorization without cycling, 45.7 ± 23.3 words. Mixed-measures ANOVA revealed that exercise did not alter recall ability (p = 0.121). However, statistical contrasts showed that the number of words recalled following memorization during cycling was higher than number of words recalled during the other interventions (p = 0.043). The results indicate that exercise has no adverse effect on memorization ability. Simultaneous memorization and exercise produced a greater ability to recall words than memorization after or without exercise

    Prevalence of Low Energy Availability in Collegiate Female Runners and Implementation of Nutrition Education Intervention

    Objective: This study examined the prevalence of low energy availability in a sample of female collegiate athletes (N=25) then delivered nutrition education related to the female athlete triad and assessed change in knowledge and dietary behaviors. Methods: Average energy intake was assessed pre- and post-education using Automated Self-Administered 24- Hour Dietary Recalls. We assessed body composition with multiple-site skinfold measures. Energy expenditure was assessed with accelerometers and a physical activity diary over a 3-day period. A 73-item questionnaire was used to assess knowledge and behavior changes. Results: At baseline, 92% had an index of energy availability /kg of fat free mass/day. 40% of participants were amenorrheic, and 32% had a history of stress fractures. There was an increase in summed nutrition knowledge, post-nutrition education (p=0.001), but no increase in caloric intake (p=0.979). Conclusion: Low energy availability was common in this sample of female collegiate track athletes, but did not improve with a targeted intervention

    Recainam, A potent new antiarrhythmic agent: Effects on complex ventricular arrhythmias

    The antiarrhythmic efficacy and safety of intravenous recainam, a newly synthesized compound displaying potent class I antiarrhythmic activity, were tested in 10 hospitalized patients with frequent (>30/h) complex ventricular ectopic beats. There were seven men and three women of average age 57 years (range 21 to 74); five had ischemic heart disease, three had cardiomyopathy and two had valvular heart disease. Recainam was given as a 3.0 mg/kg per 40 min loading infusion followed by a 0.9 mg/kg per h maintenance infusion over a 24 hour observation period. Arrhythmia response was assessed both in the short term (comparing 2 hours before and 1 hour after drug loading) and in the long term (comparing 48 hours before drug loading and 23 hours of maintenance infusion).The median frequency of total premature ventricular complexes decreased in the short term by 99.6% (from 392.5 to 1.5/h, p < 0.005) and in the long term by 99.7% (from 435 to 1.3/h, p < 0.01). Repetitive beats were suppressed by a median of 100% both in the short term (p < 0.006) and during 24 hour infusion (from 80.9 to 0/h, p < 0.003). More than 90% suppression of repetitive beats occurred in all 10 patients (100%) and more than 90% suppression of total arrhythmias occurred in 9 patients (90%) during the maintenance period. Electrocardiographic PR and QRS intervals increased by 19% (p < 0.001) and 24% (p < 0.003), respectively, during therapy, but the JTc interval decreased (p < 0.001). Plasma recainam concentrations averaged 5.2 ± 0.9 μg/ml after loading and 3.0 ± 0.5 μg/ml during maintenance therapy. No adverse symptoms occurred.In summary, recainam is a promising, highly efficacious and well tolerated agent when administered intravenously for short-term and maintenance suppression of complex ventricular arrhythmias. The efficacy of oral and intravenous recainam for arrhythmia management deserves further evaluation

    Measured Thoracic Gas Volume Versus Two Predictions

    Body composition, or one’s fat mass relative to total mass, is important to a person’s health and physical performance. One method to measure body composition is the Bod Pod air displacement plethysmograph. To determine body volume from the Bod Pod, thoracic gas volume (TGV), or the volume of air in the lungs during a normal breath, must be measured or predicted. PURPOSE: The intent of this study was to compare measured TGV to two predictions: one from the Bod Pod (TGVBP) that makes assumptions about functional residual capacity and tidal volume, and one from a recent publication (TGVDucharme) that relies on measures of height and body mass rather than lung volumes. METHODS: Bod Pod data from university club sport athletes participating in a larger study were used. TGV was measured following the Bod Pod manufacturer’s instructions. Comparisons of mean data were made between the measured test and the two predictions with a one-way repeated-measures ANOVA. Individual error scores were evaluated with Bland-Altman plots. RESULTS: Data from 26 club sport athletes (18 male, 8 female) revealed a statistically significant difference (p = .001) between the three TGV measures. The measured TGV (4.108 ± 0.850 L) and TGVDucharme (4.092 ± 0.655 L) were not significantly different from one another (p = .851), but TGVBP (3.724 ± 0.409 L) significantly underestimated the measured TGV (p = .002) and Ducharme’s prediction (p \u3c .001). A clear bias exists for TGVBP (r = -0.799, p \u3c .001), such that the Bod Pod prediction overestimates athletes with a small TGV (\u3c 3.3 L) and underestimates athletes with a large TGV (\u3e 3.3 L). The bias for TGVDucharme is statistically significant (r = -0.460, p = .018), but much smaller than the bias from the Bod Pod prediction. CONCLUSION: When possible, measure TGV. If TGV must be predicted, use the Ducharme prediction rather than the TGV prediction from the Bod Pod

    Effects of Home Exercise on Immediate and Delayed Affect and Mood Among Rural Individuals at Risk for Type 2 Diabetes

    Physical activity is important for reducing overweight and obesity and related health consequences. This study examined changes in mood following 16 weeks of exercise in a sample of 29 individuals residing in a rural area and at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Significant positive mood changes were detected, with moderate to large effect sizes. Assessments also revealed significant delayed postexercise positive emotion changes. These findings extend research on the mood benefits of exercise to individuals residing in rural settings and at risk for T2DM and suggest that to gain a full understanding of the exercise-affect relation, investigators need to assess affect at delayed intervals following exercise

    Practical Minimal Perfect Hashing Functions for Large Databases

    We describe the first practical algorithms for finding minimal perfect hash functions that have been used to access very large databases (i.e., having over 1 million keys). This method extends earlier work wherein an 0(n-cubed) algorithm was devised, building upon prior work by Sager that described an 0(n-to the fourth) algorithm. Our first linear expected time algorithm makes use of three key insights: applying randomness whereever possible, ordering our search for hash functions based on the degree of the vertices in a graph that represents word dependencies, and viewing hash value assignment in terms of adding circular patterns of related words to a partially filled disk. Our second algorithm builds functions that are slightly more complex, but does not build a word dependency graph and so approaches the theoretical lower bound on function specification size. While ultimately applicable to a wide variety of data and file access needs, these algorithms have already proven useful in aiding our work in improving the performance of CD-ROM systems and our construction of a Large External Network Database (LEND) for semantic networks and hypertext/hypermedia collections. Virginia Disc One includes a demonstration of a minimal perfect hash function running on a PC to access a 130,198 word list on that CD-ROM. Several other microcomputer, minicomputer, and parallel processor versions and applications of our algorithm have also been developed. Tests including those wiht a French word list of 420,878 entries and a library catalog key set with over 3.8 million keys have shown that our methods work with very large databases

    Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA): stellar mass estimates

    This paper describes the first catalogue of photometrically derived stellar mass estimates for intermediate-redshift (z < 0.65; median z= 0.2) galaxies in the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) spectroscopic redshift survey. These masses, as well as the full set of ancillary stellar population parameters, will be made public as part of GAMA data release 2. Although the GAMA database does include near-infrared (NIR) photometry, we show that the quality of our stellar population synthesis fits is significantly poorer when these NIR data are included. Further, for a large fraction of galaxies, the stellar population parameters inferred from the optical-plus-NIR photometry are formally inconsistent with those inferred from the optical data alone. This may indicate problems in our stellar population library, or NIR data issues, or both; these issues will be addressed for future versions of the catalogue. For now, we have chosen to base our stellar mass estimates on optical photometry only. In light of our decision to ignore the available NIR data, we examine how well stellar mass can be constrained based on optical data alone. We use generic properties of stellar population synthesis models to demonstrate that restframe colour alone is in principle a very good estimator of stellar mass-to-light ratio, M*/Li. Further, we use the observed relation between restframe (g-i) and M*/Li for real GAMA galaxies to argue that, modulo uncertainties in the stellar evolution models themselves, (g-i) colour can in practice be used to estimate M*/Li to an accuracy of ≲0.1 dex (1σ). This 'empirically calibrated' (g-i)-M*/Li relation offers a simple and transparent means for estimating galaxies' stellar masses based on minimal data, and so provides a solid basis for other surveys to compare their results to z≲0.4 measurements from GAMA

    The crystal structure of Dhaf4260 from Desulfitobacterium hafniense DCB-2 was determined by single-wavelength anomalous diffraction (SAD) to a resolution of 2.01 Å using the semi-automated high-throughput pipeline of the Joint Center for Structural Genomics (JCSG) as part of the NIGMS Protein Structure Initiative (PSI). This protein structure is the first representative of the PF04016 (DUF364) Pfam family and reveals a novel combination of two well known domains (an enolase N-terminal-like fold followed by a Rossmann-like domain). Structural and bioinformatic analyses reveal partial similarities to Rossmann-like methyltransferases, with residues from the enolase-like fold combining to form a unique active site that is likely to be involved in the condensation or hydrolysis of molecules implicated in the synthesis of flavins, pterins or other siderophores. The genome context of Dhaf4260 and homologs additionally supports a role in heavy-metal chelation
