Superconducting Bearing Design for Outer Rotor Flywheel Using Lumped Parameter Techniques
This paper describes the application of lumped parameter modeling techniques to designing high temperature superconducting bearings for outer-rotor flywheel energy storage systems. The lumped parameter models decrease computational time by 99% compared to Finite Element Analysis (FEM) without compromising fidelity needed to capture the non-linear and hysteretic force-displacement behavior between a levitated permanent magnet and bulk superconductor. The techniques formulated can be used to quickly evaluate lifting capacity and translational stiffness for a superconducting bearing design. The validity of the modeling approach has been verified by comparing results from FEM studies and experimental tests.Center for Electromechanic
One-loop amplitudes for four-point functions with two external massive quarks and two external massless partons up to O(epsilon^2)
We present complete analytical results on the
one-loop amplitudes relevant for the NNLO quark-parton model description of the
hadroproduction of heavy quarks as given by the so-called loop-by-loop
contributions. All results of the perturbative calculation are given in the
dimensional regularization scheme. These one-loop amplitudes can also be used
as input in the determination of the corresponding NNLO cross sections for
heavy flavor photoproduction, and in photon-photon reactions.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures in the text, Revtex, one reference added, minor

A high resolution solar atlas for fluorescence calculations
The characteristics required of a solar atlas to be used for studying the fluorescence process in comets are examined. Several sources of low resolution data were combined to provide an absolutely calibrated spectrum from 2250 A to 7000A. Three different sources of high resolution data were also used to cover this same spectral range. The low resolution data were then used to put each high resolution spectrum on an absolute scale. The three high resolution spectra were then combined in their overlap regions to produce a single, absolutely calibrated high resolution spectrum over the entire spectral range
Next-to-next-to-leading order results for heavy quark pair production in quark--antiquark collisions: The one-loop squared contributions
We calculate the next-to-next-to-leading order
one-loop squared corrections to the production of heavy quark pairs in
quark-antiquark annihilations. These are part of the next-to-next-to-leading
order radiative QCD corrections to this process. Our
results, with the full mass dependence retained, are presented in a closed and
very compact form, in the dimensional regularization scheme. We have found very
intriguing factorization properties for the finite part of the amplitudes.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, electronic results file, abbreviation NNLO in

Push-Pull Block Puzzles are Hard
This paper proves that push-pull block puzzles in 3D are PSPACE-complete to
solve, and push-pull block puzzles in 2D with thin walls are NP-hard to solve,
settling an open question by Zubaran and Ritt. Push-pull block puzzles are a
type of recreational motion planning problem, similar to Sokoban, that involve
moving a `robot' on a square grid with obstacles. The obstacles
cannot be traversed by the robot, but some can be pushed and pulled by the
robot into adjacent squares. Thin walls prevent movement between two adjacent
squares. This work follows in a long line of algorithms and complexity work on
similar problems. The 2D push-pull block puzzle shows up in the video games
Pukoban as well as The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, giving another
proof of hardness for the latter. This variant of block-pushing puzzles is of
particular interest because of its connections to reversibility, since any
action (e.g., push or pull) can be inverted by another valid action (e.g., pull
or push).Comment: Full version of CIAC 2017 paper. 17 page
Transnational reflections on transnational research projects on men, boys and gender relations
This article reflects on the research project, ‘Engaging South African and Finnish youth towards new traditions of non-violence, equality and social well-being’, funded by the Finnish and South African national research councils, in the context of wider debates on research, projects and transnational processes. The project is located within a broader analysis of research projects and projectization (the reduction of research to separate projects), and the increasing tendencies for research to be framed within and as projects, with their own specific temporal and organizational characteristics. This approach is developed further in terms of different understandings of research across borders: international, comparative, multinational and transnational. Special attention is given to differences between research projects that are in the Europe and the EU, and projects that are between the global North and the global South. The theoretical, political and practical challenges of the North-South research project are discussed

O processo de filtragem de políticas: Entendendo as respostas distintas do National College Completion Agenda en los Estados Unidos
The United States has faced stagnant postsecondary education degree completion rates for over a decade. When coupled with improved educational outcomes in other nations, the one-time world leader in higher education attainment has precipitously declined in standing internationally. Coupling this reality with the need for a more educated workforce domestically led President Barack Obama to proclaim improving higher education completion rates a national imperative in 2009. Despite input from the federal government, due to the decentralized nature of American postsecondary education, individual states maintain primary responsibility for governance and policy decisions. Consequently, there has been a range of state responses to improving college completion. Through a comparative case analysis, this study considers a putatively homogenous region to investigate state-level factors that “filtered” the national college completion agenda to distinct responses in Georgia, South Carolina, and Texas.Estados Unidos se ha enfrentado a tasas de finalización de estudios de educación postsecundaria estancadas durante más de una década. In Nightingale's footsteps: A qualitative analysis of the impact of leadership development within the clinical learning environment
Aim
To identify and describe the impact areas of a newly developed leadership development programme focussed on positioning leaders to improve the student experience of the clinical learning environment.
Background
There is a need to consider extending traditional ways of developing leaders within the clinical learning in order to accommodate an increased number of students and ensure their learning experience is fulfilling and developmental. The Florence Nightingale Foundation implemented a bespoke leadership development programme within the clinical learning environment. Identifying the areas of impact will help to inform organisational decision making regarding the benefits of encouraging and supporting emerging leaders to undertake this type of programme.
Method
For this qualitative descriptive study, eight health care professionals who took part in a bespoke leadership development programme were interviewed individually and then collectively. The Florence Nightingale Foundation fellowship/scholarship programme is examined to determine impact.
Results
Two key themes were described in relation to impact of the programme. These were ‘Personal Development’ and ‘Professional Impact’. The two key themes comprised several subthemes. The notion of time and space to think was subsumed within each theme.
Conclusion
Data highlights that the Florence Nightingale Foundation programme had a distinct impact on participants by transforming thinking and increasing self-confidence to enable changes to make improvements both within their organisations and at national level.
Implications for Nursing Management
Health care managers must continue to invest in building leadership capacity and capability through programmes that can help position individuals to realize their potential to positively influence health outcomes and wider society
