    RSSI-based environment identification for 2.45 GHz body area networks

    Abstract—A unique property of body area networks (BANs) is the mobility of the network as the user moves freely around. This mobility represents a significant challenge for BANs, since, in order to operate efficiently, they need to be able to adapt to the changing propagation environment. A method is presented that allows BAN nodes to classify the current operating environment in terms of multipath conditions, based on received signal strength indicator values during normal packet transmissions. A controlled set of measurements was carried out to study the effect different environments inflict on on-body link signal strength in a 2.45 GHz BAN. The analysis shows that, by using two statistical parameters, gathered over a period of one second, BAN nodes can successfully classify the operating environment for over 90% of the time

    True fractional calcium absorption in Chinese children measured with stable isotopes (42Ca and 44Ca)

    True fractional Ca absorption (TFCA) was compared in children with different habitual Ca intakes using a double-label stable-isotope technique. Chinese children aged 7 years from Hongkong (n22) and Jiangmen (n12) participated in the study. An oral administration of 8 mg 44Ca in 100 g chocolate milk was given shortly after an intravenous injection of 0.75 mg 42Ca. Ca isotopic ratios were determined in urine samples collected 24 h later using thermal-ionization mass spectrometry. There was no significant difference in TFCA between Jiangmen and Hongkong children (P = 0.16). TFCA of a lower-Ca-intake group (Ca 500 mg/d, n15) with mean Ca intake 862 mg/d was 54.8 (SD 7.3)%; the difference in TFCA was significant (P = 0.016). Serum levels of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol of the children were adequate (33.7 (SD 7.7) ng/ml). The present study indicates that growing children accustomed to a low-Ca diet appear to be able to enhance their absorptive capacity. If it is assumed that dietary Ca absorption by Chinese children resembles their TFCA from a single meal of chocolate milk, then the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for Ca for Chinese children would be lower than the US RDA (800 mg/d), which is based on an estimated 40% Ca absorption as reported for Caucasian children. A comparative absorption study is necessary to determine whether there is any difference in TFCA between Caucasian and Chinese children

    STUDY OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between dietary vitamin C and hip bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. DESIGN: This was a cross sectional study using retrospective diet and vitamin supplement data. SETTING: The Seattle area of Washington State. PARTICIPANTS: Screenees for a clinical trial of a drug to prevent osteoporotic fractures; 1892 women aged 55-80 years who had hip bone densitometry and osteoporosis risk factor information. MAIN RESULTS: Mean energy adjusted dietary intake of vitamin C was 113 mg/day; including supplement use, mean intake was 407 mg/day. There were no differences in BMD according to diet-only vitamin C intake or combined dietary and supplemental vitamin C intake. Longer duration of vitamin C supplement use was associated with higher BMD in women who had not used oestrogen replacement therapy (trend p = 0.02) and among women aged 55-64 years (trend p = 0.01). Women aged 55-64 years who used vitamin C supplements for > or = 10 years had a higher BMD than non-users aged 55-64 years (multivariate adjusted mean BMD 0.699 (0.017) g/cm2 versus 0.655 (0.007) g/cm2, p = 0.02). Benefits were not evident in older age groups or in women who had used oestrogen in the past. Frequent intake of foods rich in vitamin C was not associated with BMD. CONCLUSION: There was no evidence that vitamin C from the diet was associated with BMD, although long term use of vitamin C supplements was associated with a higher BMD in the early postmenopausal years and among never users of oestrogen
