Nonverbal Behavior During Face-to-face Social Interaction in Schizophrenia
Patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia display social cognitive deficits. However, little is known about patientsâ nonverbal communication during their social encounters with others. This review identified 17 studies investigating nonverbal communication in patientsâ unscripted face-to-face interactions, addressing a) nonverbal differences between patients and others, b) nonverbal behavior of the patientsâ partners, c) the association between nonverbal behavior and symptoms, and d) the association between nonverbal behavior and social outcomes. Patients displayed fewer nonverbal behaviors inviting interaction, with negative symptoms exacerbating this pattern. Positive symptoms were associated with heightened nonverbal behavior. Patientsâ partners changed their own nonverbal behavior in response to the patient. Reduced prosocial behaviors, inviting interaction, were associated with poorer social outcomes. The evidence suggests that patientsâ nonverbal behavior, during face-to-face interaction, is influenced by patients symptoms and impacts the success of their social interactions

Predicting visual function from the measurements of retinal nerve fiber layer structure
Purpose: To develop and validate a method for predicting visual function from retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) structure in glaucoma.
Methods: RNFL thickness (RNFLT) measurements from GDxVCC scanning laser polarimetry (SLP) and visual field (VF) sensitivity from standard automated perimetry were made available from 535 eyes from three centres. In a training dataset, structure-function relationships were characterized using linear regression and a type of neural network: Radial Basis Function customised under a Bayesian framework (BRBF). These two models were used in a test dataset to 1) predict sensitivity values at individual VF locations from RNFLT measurements and 2) predict the spatial relationship between VF locations and positions at a peripapillary RNFLT measurement annulus. Predicted spatial relationships were compared with a published anatomical structure-function map.
Results: Compared with linear regression, BRBF yielded a nearly two-fold improvement (P<0.001; paired t-test) in performance of predicting VF sensitivity in the test dataset (mean absolute prediction error of 2.9dB (standard deviation (SD) 3.7dB) versus 4.9dB (SD 4.0dB)). The predicted spatial structure-function relationship accorded better (P<0.001; paired t-test) with anatomical prior knowledge when the BRBF was compared with the linear regression (median absolute angular difference of 15° versus 62°).
Conclusions: The BRBF generates clinically useful relationships that relate topographical maps of RNFL measurement to VF locations and allows the VF sensitivity to be predicted from structural measurements. This method may allow clinicians to evaluate structural and functional measures in the same domain. It could also be generalized to use other structural measures
Place matters: but does local leadership?
The arrival of New Labour into Government witnessed the prominent re-emergence of place onto the policy agenda. This heralded a range of area-based-initiatives designed to both tackle neighbourhood forms of deprivation and to re-establish a sense of identity and connection between individuals and their local community. In terms of place-making, effective and inclusive participation, representation and leadership were all identified as prerequisites for the creation of sustainable communities . But how important is local leadership and strategic vision within local public service organisations in achieving the desired place-making outcomes? This paper examines the extent to which local leadership and strategic vision represents a significant factor in promoting higher levels of satisfaction, belonging, cohesion and participation across single tier councils in England. The ensuing empirical evidence raises significant questions not only about the importance of local leadership in place-making, but also the environmental and organizational factors that shape local places
Shared understanding in psychiatristâpatient communication: Association with treatment adherence in schizophrenia
Objective
Effective doctorâpatient communication, including a shared understanding, is associated with treatment adherence across medicine. However, communication is affected by a diagnosis of schizophrenia and reaching a shared understanding can be challenging. During conversation, people detect and deal with possible misunderstanding using a conversational process called repair. This study tested the hypothesis that more frequent repair in psychiatristâpatient communication is associated with better treatment adherence in schizophrenia.
Methods
Routine psychiatric consultations involving patients with (DSM-IV) schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder were audio-visually recorded. Consultations were coded for repair and patientsâ symptoms and insight assessed. Adherence was assessed six months later. A principal components analysis reduced the repair data for further analysis. Random effects models examined the association between repair and adherence, adjusting for symptoms, consultation length and the amount patients spoke.
Results
138 consultations were recorded, 118 were followed up. Patients requesting clarification of the psychiatrist's talk and the clarification provided by the psychiatrist was associated with adherence six months later (OR 5.82, 95% CI 1.31â25.82, p = 0.02).
Conclusion
The quality of doctorâpatient communication also appears to influence adherence in schizophrenia.
Practice implications
Future research should investigate how patient clarification can be encouraged among patients and facilitated by psychiatristsâ communication
Discipline-Specific Compared to Generic Training of Teachers in Higher Education
A recurrent theme arising in the higher education sector is the suitability and effectiveness of generic versus discipline-specific training of university teachers, who are often recruited based on their disciplinary specialties to become teachers in higher education. We compared two groups of participants who had undergone training using a generic post-graduate certificate in higher education (PGCertGeneric) versus a discipline-specific course in veterinary education (PGCertVetEd). The study was conducted using a survey that allowed comparison of participants who completed PGCertGeneric (n=21) with PGCertVetEd (n=22). Results indicated that participants from both PGCertGeneric and PGCertVetEd considered teaching to be satisfying and important to their careers, valued the teaching observation component of the course, and identified similar training needs. However, the participants of the PGCertVetEd felt that the course made them better teachers, valued the relevance of the components taught, understood course design better, were encouraged to do further courses/reading in teaching and learning, changed their teaching as a result of the course, and were less stressed about teaching as compared to the PGCertGeneric participants (p<.05). It is likely that the PGCertVetEd, which was designed and developed by veterinarians with a wider understanding of the veterinary sector, helped the participants perceive the training course as suited to their needs
Informationally complete measurements and groups representation
Informationally complete measurements on a quantum system allow to estimate
the expectation value of any arbitrary operator by just averaging functions of
the experimental outcomes. We show that such kind of measurements can be
achieved through positive-operator valued measures (POVM's) related to unitary
irreducible representations of a group on the Hilbert space of the system. With
the help of frame theory we provide a constructive way to evaluate the

Static avalanches and Giant stress fluctuations in Silos
We propose a simple model for arch formation in silos. We show that small
pertubations (such as the thermal expansion of the beads) may lead to giant
stress fluctuations on the bottom plate of the silo. The relative amplitude
of these fluctuations are found to be power-law distributed, as

Quantized Scaling of Growing Surfaces
The Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class of stochastic surface growth is
studied by exact field-theoretic methods. From previous numerical results, a
few qualitative assumptions are inferred. In particular, height correlations
should satisfy an operator product expansion and, unlike the correlations in a
turbulent fluid, exhibit no multiscaling. These properties impose a
quantization condition on the roughness exponent and the dynamic
