    Mean Empirical Likelihood

    Empirical likelihood methods are widely used in different settings to construct the confidence regions for parameters which satisfy the moment constraints. However, the empirical likelihood ratio confidence regions may have poor accuracy, especially for small sample sizes and multi-dimensional situations. A novel Mean Empirical Likelihood (MEL) method is proposed. A new pseudo dataset using the means of observation values is constructed to define the empirical likelihood ratio and it is proved that this MEL ratio satisfies Wilks’ theorem. Simulations with different examples are given to assess its finite sample performance, which shows that the confidence regions constructed by Mean Empirical Likelihood are much more accurate than that of the other Empirical Likelihood methods

    Nitrogen deprivation-induced de novo transcriptomic profiling of the oleaginous green alga Botryococcus braunii 779

    AbstractTo assess the effect of nitrogen deprivation (ND), a moderately growing A-race Botryococcus braunii subisolate 779 was subjected to nitrogen deprivation for 3days. De novo transcriptome was assembled and annotated by using Trinity software and Basic Local Alignment Search Tools (BLAST), respectively. Comparative analysis indicates that transcriptomes of A-races differ from those of B-races. Furthermore, majority of the homologous ESTs in A-race but not B-race transcriptomes were unknown sequences. Upon ND, level of photosynthetic transcripts, but not photosynthetic efficiency was downregulated. Unlike hydrocarbon contents, ESTs involved in hydrocarbon biosynthesis were not upregulated. Taken together, our results imply that A- and B-races belong to different B. braunii subspecies. Upon ND, excess photosynthetic transcripts are recycled for nitrogen; and hydrocarbon accumulation is not via de novo biosynthesis.     A Finite Element Mesh Aggregating Approach to Multiple-Source Reconstruction in Bioluminescence Tomography

    A finite element mesh aggregating approach is presented to reconstruct images of multiple internal bioluminescence sources. Rather than assuming independence between mesh nodes, the proposed reconstruction strategy exploits spatial structure of nodes and aggregation feature of density distribution on the finite element mesh to adaptively determine the number of sources and to improve the quality of reconstructed images. With the proposed strategy integrated in the regularization-based reconstruction process, reconstruction algorithms need no a priori knowledge of source number; even more importantly, they can automatically reconstruct multiple sources that differ greatly in density or power

    Nonlinear magnetotransport shaped by Fermi surface topology and convexity in WTe2

    The nature of Fermi surface defines the physical properties of conductors and many physical phenomena can be traced to its shape. Although the recent discovery of a current-dependent nonlinear magnetoresistance in spin-polarized non-magnetic materials has attracted considerable attention in spintronics, correlations between this phenomenon and the underlying fermiology remain unexplored. Here, we report the observation of nonlinear magnetoresistance at room temperature in a semimetal WTe2, with an interesting temperature-driven inversion. Theoretical calculations reproduce the nonlinear transport measurements and allow us to attribute the inversion to temperature-induced changes in Fermi surface convexity. We also report a large anisotropy of nonlinear magnetoresistance in WTe2, due to its low symmetry of Fermi surfaces. The good agreement between experiments and theoretical modeling reveals the critical role of Fermi surface topology and convexity on the nonlinear magneto-response. These results lay a new path to explore ramifications of distinct fermiology for nonlinear transport in condensed-matter

    PsyBench: a balanced and in-depth Psychological Chinese Evaluation Benchmark for Foundation Models

    As Large Language Models (LLMs) are becoming prevalent in various fields, there is an urgent need for improved NLP benchmarks that encompass all the necessary knowledge of individual discipline. Many contemporary benchmarks for foundational models emphasize a broad range of subjects but often fall short in presenting all the critical subjects and encompassing necessary professional knowledge of them. This shortfall has led to skewed results, given that LLMs exhibit varying performance across different subjects and knowledge areas. To address this issue, we present psybench, the first comprehensive Chinese evaluation suite that covers all the necessary knowledge required for graduate entrance exams. psybench offers a deep evaluation of a model's strengths and weaknesses in psychology through multiple-choice questions. Our findings show significant differences in performance across different sections of a subject, highlighting the risk of skewed results when the knowledge in test sets is not balanced. Notably, only the ChatGPT model reaches an average accuracy above 70%70\%, indicating that there is still plenty of room for improvement. We expect that psybench will help to conduct thorough evaluations of base models' strengths and weaknesses and assist in practical application in the field of psychology

    Heart failure with midrange ejection fraction: Prior left ventricular ejection fraction and prognosis

    Evidence-based guidelines for heart failure management depend mainly on current left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). However, fewer studies have examined the impact of prior LVEF. Patients may enter the heart failure with midrange ejection fraction (HFmrEF) category when heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) deteriorates or heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) improves. In this study, we examined the association between change in LVEF and adverse outcomes. HFmrEF patients with at least two or more echocardiograms 3 months apart at the First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University between September 1, 2015 and November 30, 2019 were identified. According to the prior LVEF, the subjects were divided into improved group (prior LVEF < 40%), stable group (prior LVEF between 40 and 50%), and deteriorated group (prior LVEF ≥ 50%). The primary outcomes were cardiovascular death, all-cause mortality, hospitalization for worsening heart failure, and composite event of all-cause mortality or all-cause hospitalization. A total of 1,168 HFmrEF patients (67.04% male, mean age 63.60 ± 12.18 years) were included. The percentages of improved, stable, and deteriorated group were 310 (26.54%), 334 (28.60%), and 524 (44.86%), respectively. After a period of follow-up, 208 patients (17.81%) died and 500 patients met the composite endpoint. The rates of all-cause mortality were 35 (11.29%), 55 (16.47%), and 118 (22.52%), and the composite outcome was 102 (32.90%), 145 (43.41%), and 253 (48.28%) for the improved, stable, and deteriorated groups, respectively. Cox regression analysis showed that the deterioration group had higher risk of cardiovascular death (HR: 1.707, 95% CI: 1.064-2.739, = 0.027), all-cause death (HR 1.948, 95% CI 1.335-2.840, = 0.001), and composite outcome (HR 1.379, 95% CI 1.096-1.736, = 0.006) compared to the improvement group. The association still remained significant after fully adjusted for both all-cause mortality (HR = 1.899, 95% CI 1.247-2.893, = 0.003) and composite outcome (HR: 1.324, 95% CI: 1.020-1.718, = 0.035). HFmrEF patients are heterogeneous with three different subsets identified, each with different outcomes. Strategies for managing HFmrEF should include previously measured LVEF to allow stratification based on direction changes in LVEF to better optimize treatment.     Enhancing Faraday and Kerr rotations based on toroidal dipole mode in an all-dielectric magneto-optical metasurface

    The magneto-optical Faraday and Kerr effects are widely used in modern optical devices. In this letter, we propose an all-dielectric metasurface composed of perforated magneto-optical thin films, which can support the highly confined toroidal dipole resonance and provide full overlap between the localized electromagnetic field and the thin film, and consequently enhance the magneto-optical effects to an unprecedented degree. The numerical results based on finite element method show that the Faraday and Kerr rotations can reach -13.59deg{\deg} and 8.19deg{\deg} in the vicinity of toroidal dipole resonance, which are 21.2 and 32.8 times stronger than those in the equivalent thickness of thin films, respectively. In addition, we design an environment refractive index sensor based on the resonantly enhanced Faraday and Kerr rotations, with sensitivities of 62.96 nm/RIU and 73.16 nm/RIU, and the corresponding maximum figures of merit 132.22deg{\deg}/RIU and 429.45deg{\deg}/RIU, respectively. This work provides a new strategy for enhancing the magneto-optical effects at nanoscale, and paves the way for the research and development of magneto-optical metadevices such as sensors, memories, and circuits
