General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamic Simulations of Black Hole Accretion Disks
Observations are providing increasingly detailed quantitative information
about the accretion flows that power such high energy systems as X-ray binaries
and active galactic nuclei. Analytic models of such systems must rely on
assumptions such as regular flow geometry and a simple, parameterized stress.
Global numerical simulations offer a way to investigate the basic physical
dynamics of accretion flows without these assumptions. For black hole accretion
studies one solves the equations of general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics.
Magnetic fields are of fundamental importance to the structure and evolution of
accretion disks because magnetic turbulence is the source of the anomalous
stress that drives accretion. We have developed a three-dimensional general
relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulation code to evolve time-dependent
accretion systems self-consistently. Recent global simulations of black hole
accretion disks suggest that the generic structure of the accretion flow is
usefully divided into five regimes: the main disk, the inner disk, the corona,
the evacuated funnel, and the funnel wall jet. The properties of each of these
regions are summarized.Comment: invited review at the conference "Stellar-mass, Intermediate-mass,

Global General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamic Simulations of Accretion Tori
This paper presents an initial survey of the properties of accretion flows in
the Kerr metric from three-dimensional, general relativistic
magnetohydrodynamic simulations of accretion tori. We consider three fiducial
models of tori around rotating, both prograde and retrograde, and nonrotating
black holes; these three fiducial models are also contrasted with axisymmetric
simulations and a pseudo-Newtonian simulation with equivalent initial
conditions to delineate the limitations of these approximations.Comment: Submitted to ApJ. 30 pages, 21 figures. Animations and

MHD simulations of the magnetorotational instability in a shearing box with zero net flux. I. The issue of convergence
We study the properties of MHD turbulence driven by the magnetorotational
instability (MRI) in accretion disks. We adopt the local shearing box model and
focus on the special case for which the initial magnetic flux threading the
disk vanishes. We employ the finite difference code ZEUS to evolve the ideal
MHD equations. Performing a set of numerical simulations in a fixed
computational domain with increasing resolution, we demonstrate that turbulent
activity decreases as resolution increases. We quantify the turbulent activity
by measuring the rate of angular momentum transport through evaluating the
standard alpha parameter. We find alpha=0.004 when (N_x,N_y,N_z)=(64,100,64),
alpha=0.002 when (N_x,N_y,N_z)=(128,200,128) and alpha=0.001 when
(N_x,N_y,N_z)=(256,400,256). This steady decline is an indication that
numerical dissipation, occurring at the grid scale is an important determinant
of the saturated form of the MHD turbulence. Analysing the results in Fourier
space, we demonstrate that this is due to the MRI forcing significant flow
energy all the way down to the grid dissipation scale. We also use our results
to study the properties of the numerical dissipation in ZEUS. Its amplitude is
characterised by the magnitude of an effective magnetic Reynolds number Re_M
which increases from 10^4 to 10^5 as the number of grid points is increased
from 64 to 256 per scale height. The simulations we have carried out do not
produce results that are independent of the numerical dissipation scale, even
at the highest resolution studied. Thus it is important to use physical
dissipation, both viscous and resistive, and to quantify contributions from
numerical effects, when performing numerical simulations of MHD turbulence with
zero net flux in accretion disks at the resolutions normally considered.Comment: 10 pages, 15 figures, accepted in A&A. Numerical results improved,

Numerical analysis of a downsized 2-stroke uniflow engine
In order to optimize the 2-stroke uniflow engine performance on vehicle applications, numerical analysis has been introduced, 3D CFD model has been built for the optimization of intake charge organization. The scavenging process was investigated and the intake port design details were improved. Then the output data from 3D CFD calculation were applied to a 1D engine model to process the analysis on engine performance. The boost system optimization of the engine has been carried out also. Furthermore, a vehicle model was also set up to investigate the engine in-vehicle performance
Attitudes to telecare among older people, professional care workers and informal carers: a preventative strategy or crisis management?
This paper reports findings from an attitudinal survey towards telecare that emerged from twenty-two focus groups comprising ninety-two older people, fifty-five professional stakeholders and thirty-nine carers. These were convened in three different regions of England as a precursor to telecare service development. The results from this study suggest that informantsā views were shaped by prior knowledge of conventional health and social care delivery in their locality and the implication is that expectations and requirements in respect of telecare services in general are likely to be informed by wider perceptions about the extent to which community care should operate as a preventative strategy or as a mechanism for crisis management
Laser diode initiated detonators for space applications
Ensign Bickford Aerospace Company (EBAC) has over ten years of experience in the design and development of laser ordnance systems. Recent efforts have focused on the development of laser diode ordnance systems for space applications. Because the laser initiated detonators contain only insensitive secondary explosives, a high degree of system safety is achieved. Typical performance characteristics of a laser diode initiated detonator are described in this paper, including all-fire level, function time, and output. A finite difference model used at EBAC to predict detonator performance, is described and calculated results are compared to experimental data. Finally, the use of statistically designed experiments to evaluate performance of laser initiated detonators is discussed
Phosphorylation by Akt within the ST loop of AMPK-Ī±1 down-regulates its activation in tumour cells
The insulin/IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1)-activated protein kinase Akt (also known as protein kinase B) phosphorylates Ser(487) in the āST loopā (serine/threonine-rich loop) within the C-terminal domain of AMPK-Ī±1 (AMP-activated protein kinase-Ī±1), leading to inhibition of phosphorylation by upstream kinases at the activating site, Thr(172). Surprisingly, the equivalent site on AMPK-Ī±2, Ser(491), is not an Akt target and is modified instead by autophosphorylation. Stimulation of HEK (human embryonic kidney)-293 cells with IGF-1 caused reduced subsequent Thr(172) phosphorylation and activation of AMPK-Ī±1Ā in response to the activator A769662 and the Ca(2+) ionophore A23187, effects we show to be dependent on Akt activation and Ser(487) phosphorylation. Consistent with this, in three PTEN (phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome 10)-null tumour cell lines (in which the lipid phosphatase PTEN that normally restrains the Akt pathway is absent and Akt is thus hyperactivated), AMPK was resistant to activation by A769662. However, full AMPK activation could be restored by pharmacological inhibition of Akt, or by re-expression of active PTEN. We also show that inhibition of Thr(172) phosphorylation is due to interaction of the phosphorylated ST loop with basic side chains within the Ī±C-helix of the kinase domain. Our findings reveal that a previously unrecognized effect of hyperactivation of Akt in tumour cells is to restrain activation of the LKB1 (liver kinase B1)āAMPK pathway, which would otherwise inhibit cell growth and proliferation
