Development and Certification of a New Stall Warning and Avoidance System

    Get PDF
Several methods may be employed to improve natural stall characteristics. The method employed on all learjets to obtain improved stall characteristics is a stall warning and avoidance system that employs angle of attack vanes, an electronic computer, a control column shaker motor, and a torquer which drives the control column in a pusher mode to avoid unwanted further buildup of angle of attack. The new system was developed with changes that improve system response with no performance penalty or increase in turbulence sensitivity. The following changes were made included modified system time constants and (alpha) time rate of change of vane angle dead zone and the addition of an alpha signal limiter and an alpha cut out below a specified angle of attack

    Get PDF
A conference held at Langley Research Center in May of 1980 brought together university experts from the fields of Control Theory, Operations Research, and Artificial Intelligence to explore current research in automation from both the perspective of their own particular disciplines and from that of interdisciplinary considerations. Informal discussions from the final day of the those day conference are summarized

A Spitzer Study of the Mass Loss Histories of Three Bipolar Pre-Planetary Nebulae

We present the results of far-infrared imaging of extended regions around three bipolar pre-planetary nebulae, AFGL 2688, OH 231.8+4.2, and IRAS 16342−-3814, at 70 and 160 μ\mum with the MIPS instrument on the Spitzer Space Telescope. After a careful subtraction of the point spread function of the central star from these images, we place constraints on the existence of extended shells and thus on the mass outflow rates as a function of radial distance from these stars. We find no apparent extended emission in AFGL 2688 and OH 231.8+4.2 beyond 100 arcseconds from the central source. In the case of AFGL 2688, this result is inconsistent with a previous report of two extended dust shells made on the basis of ISO observations. We derive an upper limit of 2.1×10−72.1\times10^{-7} M⊙_\odot yr−1^{-1} and 1.0×10−71.0\times10^{-7} M⊙_\odot yr−1^{-1} for the dust mass loss rate of AFGL 2688 and OH 231.8, respectively, at 200 arcseconds from each source. In contrast to these two sources, IRAS 16342−-3814 does show extended emission at both wavelengths, which can be interpreted as a very large dust shell with a radius of ∼\sim 400 arcseconds and a thickness of ∼\sim 100 arcseconds, corresponding to 4 pc and 1 pc, respectively, at a distance of 2 kpc. However, this enhanced emission may also be galactic cirrus; better azimuthal coverage is necessary for confirmation of a shell. If the extended emission is a shell, it can be modeled as enhanced mass outflow at a dust mass outflow rate of 1.5×10−61.5\times10^{-6} M⊙_\odot yr−1^{-1} superimposed on a steady outflow with a dust mass outflow rate of 1.5×10−71.5\times10^{-7} M⊙_\odot yr−1^{-1}. It is likely that this shell has swept up a substantial mass of interstellar gas during its expansion, so these estimates are upper limits to the stellar mass loss rate.Comment: 31 pages, 12 figures, accepted to A

The Versatility of Scanning Electron Microscopy in Thin Film Device Analysis

    Get PDF
The versatility of scanning electron microscopy is shown for many stages of fabrication of thin film transistor driver matrices for actively addressed liquid crystal displays. Electron channeling and Schottky barrier charge collection modes allow rapid assessment of silicon crystal quality. The secondary electron mode allows examination of conductor lead crossover integrity. A form of voltage contrast is used on the completed array to monitor performance of the array prior to liquid crystal filling

Apollo experience report: Assessment of metabolic expenditures

    Get PDF
A significant effort was made to assess the metabolic expenditure for extravehicular activity on the lunar surface. After evaluation of the real-time data available to the flight controller during extravehicular activity, three independent methods of metabolic assessment were chosen based on the relationship between heart rate and metabolic production, between oxygen consumption and metabolic production, and between the thermodynamics of the liquid-cooled garment and metabolic production. The metabolic assessment procedure is analyzed and discussed. Real-time use of this information by the Apollo flight surgeon is discussed. Results and analyses of the Apollo missions and comments concerning future applications are included

Fabric formed concrete: Physical modelling for assessment of digital form finding methods

    Get PDF
Fabric formwork is a novel concrete construction method which replaces conventional prismatic moulds with lightweight, high strength sheets of fabric. The geometry of fabric formed structures is therefore dictated by the behaviour of fabric under hydrostatic loading. While there are numerous examples of digital and physical modelling of this problem, there have only been limited efforts to link the two through measurement. In this investigation, a number of small scale fabric formed beams were manufactured using both ‘free hanging’ and ‘keel mould’ methods, and the resulting forms were accurately measured with a digital 3D scanner. Computational form finding tools were also developed, enabling a comparison to be made between the predicted and build geometries. This allowed assessment of both the accuracy of the construction methods and the limitations of the form finding techniques used. The data collected provides a useful assessment of existing form finding techniques and will be used as a reference data set as these are developed further

    The Meinunger "Nicht Rote" Objects

    Get PDF
Four high-latitude slow variable stars have been noted by Meinunger (1972) as "nicht rote" ("not red") objects and thus curious. We have previously reported (Margon & Deutsch 1997) that one of these objects, CC Boo, is in fact a QSO. Here we present observations demonstrating that the remaining three are also highly variable active galactic nuclei. The most interesting object of the four is perhaps S 10765 (= NGP9 F324-0276706), which proves to be a resolved galaxy at z=0.063. Despite the rapid and large reported variability amplitude (~1.6 mag), the spectrum is that of a perfectly normal galaxy, with no emission lines or evident nonthermal continuum. We also present new spectroscopic and photometric observations for AR CVn, suggested by Meinunger to be an RR Lyrae star despite its very faint magnitude (=19.4). The object is indeed one of the most distant RR Lyrae stars known, at a galactocentric distance of ~40 kpc.Comment: Accepted for publication in Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, Volume 111, January 1999; 14 pages including 4 figures and 1 tabl
