Job Changes and Interregional Migration of Graduates
We empirically analyze job changes and related location choices for graduates in Germany and its determinants. Using a longitudinal, representative survey-based dataset, we not only observe the transition of graduates to the labor market but also every subsequent job change within five years after graduation. Contrary to what is often assumed in the literature, our findings show that around 75% of the graduates have more than one job within our observation period and for a non-negligible share of them, job changes are related to interregional migration. Whereas job changes mostly depend on the field of study and previous employment conditions, migration is predominantly affected by previous migration paths and regional characteristics
No Place Like Home? Graduate Migration in Germany
We empirically analyze sub-national migration of graduates in Germany and its determinants. Based on a longitudinal, representative survey-based dataset of students who graduated in the academic year 2004/2005, we observe the transition to the labor market and previous and subsequent migration patterns. We find that, five years after graduation, about 60% of the graduates are employed in the university state either because they have stayed or returned. Whether or not graduates migrate largely depends on previous migration, job search characteristics and the states’ economic conditions. This results in an unbalanced migration of graduates between German states. From a public policy perspective, our analysis provides some rational for correction mechanisms. Student and Graduate Migration and its Effect on the Financing of Higher Education
The number of tertiary students enrolled outside their home country has almost doubled in the last decade. In higher education systems that are partly tax-funded, a country's labor force might not be willing to subsidize the education of foreign students who can be expected to work abroad after graduation with high probability. This paper analyzes whether and how student mobility affects the governmental decision about the financial regime of higher education based on aggregated data of 22 OECD countries for the period 2000 to 2010. We find a small but significant positive correlation. Supported by robustness checks, this points into the direction that the larger the share of foreign students among all students in a country, the more a country shifts to private-based funding. We also study other possible determinants. Among others we find that the private financing share of higher education funding depends on a country's tax revenue, its GDP and the share of students enrolled in private universities
Midpalatinale Sutur Expansion gemessen an Implantaten nach Björk
Es wurden Grafiken aus den Studien „Expansion of the midpalatal suture by removable plates, analysed by the implant method“ von Skieller (1964) und “Midpalatal suture expansion studied by the implant method over a seven-year period” von Krebs (1964) die im Rahmen der „Transactions of the European Orthodontic Society“ 1964 präsentiert wurden, ausgewertet und verglichen.
Coming to stay or to go?: Stay intention and involved uncertainty of international students
Countries compete for young talents to alleviate skilled‐labor shortage. International students, who stay after graduation, allow host countries to overcome this challenge. This study investigates the factors associated with international students' intention to stay or to go after graduation from a host country's perspective. In contrast to the literature, this analysis employs survey data collected from first‐semester students. This assures that the analysis is not distorted by attrition. Furthermore, it allows policymakers to address those students who would be no longer around later in the absence of any policy measure. At the same time, it requires to deal with uncertainty as the actual migration decision will be later. This study introduces a set of uncertainty models to the migration context. The results show that, next to career opportunities and a stay in the host country before the studies, being enrolled in a Bachelor program instead of a Master program is significantly associated with the intention to stay. The findings are largely robust to different approaches accounting for the uncertainty involved. Further, Master students are found to be significantly more uncertain than Bachelor students
