Thermodynamics of the frustrated - Heisenberg ferromagnet on the body-centered cubic lattice with arbitrary spin
We use the spin-rotation-invariant Green's function method as well as the
high-temperature expansion to discuss the thermodynamic properties of the
frustrated spin- - Heisenberg magnet on the body-centered
cubic lattice. We consider ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor bonds and
antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor bonds and arbitrary spin
. We find that the transition point between the ferromagnetic ground
state and the antiferromagnetic one is nearly independent of the spin ,
i.e., it is very close to the classical transition point . At finite temperatures we focus on the parameter regime
with a ferromagnetic ground-state. We calculate the Curie
temperature and derive an empirical formula describing the
influence of the frustration parameter and spin on . We find
that the Curie temperature monotonically decreases with increasing frustration
, where very close to the -curve exhibits a
fast decay which is well described by a logarithmic term
. To characterize the magnetic ordering
below and above , we calculate the spin-spin correlation functions
, the spontaneous
magnetization, the uniform static susceptibility as well as the
correlation length . Moreover, we discuss the specific heat and the
temperature dependence of the excitation spectrum. As approaching the
transition point some unusual features were found, such as negative
spin-spin correlations at temperatures above even though the ground state

THE USE OF MEAN-VARIANCE FOR COMMODITY FUTURES AND OPTIONS HEDGING DECISIONS
This study provides additional evidence of the usefulness of mean-variance procedures in the presence of options which can truncate and skew the returns distribution. Using a simulation analysis, price hedging decisions are examined for hog producers when options are available. Mean-variance results are contrasted with optimal decisions based on negative exponential and Cox-Rubinstein utility functions over 56 ending price scenarios and two levels of risk aversion. The findings from our simulation, which considers discrete contracts, basis risk, lognormality in prices, transactions costs, and alternative utility specifications, affirm the usefulness of mean-variance framework.Marketing,
Riccati parameter modes from Newtonian free damping motion by supersymmetry
We determine the class of damped modes \tilde{y} which are related to the
common free damping modes y by supersymmetry. They are obtained by employing
the factorization of Newton's differential equation of motion for the free
damped oscillator by means of the general solution of the corresponding Riccati
equation together with Witten's method of constructing the supersymmetric
partner operator. This procedure leads to one-parameter families of (transient)
modes for each of the three types of free damping, corresponding to a
particular type of %time-dependent angular frequency. %time-dependent,
antirestoring acceleration (adding up to the usual Hooke restoring
acceleration) of the form a(t)=\frac{2\gamma ^2}{(\gamma t+1)^{2}}\tilde{y},

Measurements of elastohydrodynamic film thickness, wear and tempering behavior of high pressure oxygen turbopump bearings
The reusable design of the Space Shuttle requires a target life of 7.5 hours for the turbopumps of the Space Shuttle main engine (SSME). This large increase from the few hundred seconds required in single-use rockets has caused various problems with the bearings of the turbopumps. The berings of the high pressure oxygen turbopump (HPOTP) were of particular concern because of wear, spalling, and cage failures at service time well below the required 7.5 hours. Lubrication and wear data were developed for the bearings. Since the HPOTP bearings operate in liquid oxygen, conventional liquid lubricants cannot be applied. Therefore, solid lubricant coatings and lubricant transfer from the polytetrafluorethylene (FTFE) cage were the primary lubrication approaches for the bearings. Measurements were made using liquid nitrogen in a rolling disk machine to determine whether usable elastohydrodynamic films could be generated to assist in the bearing lubrication
An Iterative Approach to Twisting and Diverging, Type N, Vacuum Einstein Equations: A (Third-Order) Resolution of Stephani's `Paradox'
In 1993, a proof was published, within ``Classical and Quantum Gravity,''
that there are no regular solutions to the {\it linearized} version of the
twisting, type-N, vacuum solutions of the Einstein field equations. While this
proof is certainly correct, we show that the conclusions drawn from that fact
were unwarranted, namely that this irregularity caused such solutions not to be
able to truly describe pure gravitational waves. In this article, we resolve
the paradox---since such first-order solutions must always have singular lines
in space for all sufficiently large values of ---by showing that if we
perturbatively iterate the solution up to the third order in small quantities,
there are acceptable regular solutions. That these solutions become flat before
they become non-twisting tells us something interesting concerning the general

1.0 Mm Maps and Radial Density Distributions of Southern Hii/molecular Cloud Complexes
Several 1.0 continuum mapping observations were made of seven southern hemisphere h12/molecular cloud complexes with 65 arcsec resolution. The radial density distribution of the clouds with central luminosity sources was determined observationally. Strong similarities in morphology and general physical conditions were found to exist among all of the southern clouds in the sample
Differentially rotating disks of dust: Arbitrary rotation law
In this paper, solutions to the Ernst equation are investigated that depend
on two real analytic functions defined on the interval [0,1]. These solutions
are introduced by a suitable limiting process of Backlund transformations
applied to seed solutions of the Weyl class. It turns out that this class of
solutions contains the general relativistic gravitational field of an arbitrary
differentially rotating disk of dust, for which a continuous transition to some
Newtonian disk exists. It will be shown how for given boundary conditions (i.
e. proper surface mass density or angular velocity of the disk) the
gravitational field can be approximated in terms of the above solutions.
Furthermore, particular examples will be discussed, including disks with a
realistic profile for the angular velocity and more exotic disks possessing two

Search for the decay D^0→K^0e^+e^-
A search for the decay of the charmed meson D^0→K^0e^+e^- is presented, based on data collected at the ψ(3770) resonance with the Mark III detector at the SLAC storage ring SPEAR. No evidence for this process is found, resulting in an upper limit on the decay branching ratio of 1.7×10^(-3) at the 90% confidence level
Comparison of the COBE FIRAS and DIRBE Calibrations
We compare the independent FIRAS and DIRBE observations from the COBE in the
wavelength range 100-300 microns. This cross calibration provides checks of
both data sets. The results show that the data sets are consistent within the
estimated gain and offset uncertainties of the two instruments. They show the
possibility of improving the gain and offset determination of DIRBE at 140 and
