Assessment Systems and Data Management in Colleges of Education: An Examination of Systems and Infrastructure

    Get PDF
The College of Education Assessment Infrastructure Survey was developed and administered to 1011 institutions over a twelve-month period ending April 2007. The survey examined the capacity of university-based teacher preparation programs to respond to the growing and increasingly complex data management requirements that accompanies assessment and accountability edicts. The summarized responses of 266 institutions (26%) confirmed that education units have responded to accreditation and accountability mandates though none have relied solely on the institutional-level infrastructure. This has resulted in the implementation of a variety of assessment systems that vary widely in sophistication and cost. Also, the management of these systems is largely a part-time endeavor. Additional and more contextually based studies must be conducted to determine the actual level and type of institutional support, other hidden costs, and the level of return on investment in terms of the effectiveness of these systems and their impact on unit quality outcomes

Enhanced recovery after surgery: the future of elective arthroplasty?

    Get PDF
Summary: Enhanced recovery after surgery is a method of streamlining the patient journey pre-, intra- and post-operatively in order to account for foreseeable and unforeseeable barriers to recovery. Originally pioneered in general surgery, the technique has been adopted in other specialities, given its potential to minimise the duration of hospitalisation, hasten recovery and improve patient experience. Enhanced recovery programmes are of particular interest in orthopaedic surgery, where patients who often have multiple comorbidities could gain substantial benefits from more efficient management. This is particularly pertinent given the rising prevalence of age-related joint disease requiring arthroplasty: Enhanced Recovery is more economically and clinically efficient. Relevance: Enhanced recovery is a relatively novel - heterogeneously implemented – method of managing the surgical patient journey. Intrinsic to the success of such programmes is a thorough understanding of its components and close communication within the multidisciplinary team. Medical students’ understanding of what these protocols involve will significantly affect their management of foreseeable – and unforeseeable – barriers to success in elective surgical patients during clinical years and in their future practice. It is therefore essential that all medical students – whether they have an interest in a surgical career or not – have a grounding in the components of enhanced recovery, because such programmes will form part of their practice at some point in their careers. Take-home message: Enhanced recovery is a proactive intervention, which has been shown to be extremely effective across a number of surgical disciplines in reducing length of stay, whilst maximising postoperative outcomes. Trainees would benefit from a detailed knowledge of enhanced recovery programmes in order to provide a higher standard of care during their encounters with patients at every stage of the surgical pathway

A Pragmatic Approach to Preparing Novice Doctoral Qualitative Researchers

    Get PDF
Fifty percent of social science and education doctoral students in the United States fail to complete their programs. Within this context, studies addressing research methods pedagogy and qualitative methods in particular, continue to be limited. This mixed-methods case study addresses these issues by: 1) using the Ready Develop Integrate Perform (RDIP) model to frame the competency-based design and implementation of an introductory doctoral qualitative core course and its supporting learning management system; and, 2) examining effectiveness using a framework of direct and indirect assessment evidence from online and face-to-face learners. The current design scaffolds students through qualitative research methodology and methods learning and culminates with the implementation of an individually-chosen authentic research project. A sample of online and face-to-face students, representing 37% of eligible participants (n=23), reported a stronger sense of readiness for independent research and dissertation work. In addition to expanding the qualitative methods pedagogical literature and supporting the improvement of doctoral research education, this paper a competency-based design that may be implemented in any disciplinary setting. The detailed blueprint and implementation advice for university teachers makes this work relevant to a broad multidisciplinary and international audience.

The Informal Sector In Francophone Africa: Firm Size, Productivity, And Institutions

This book is a major step towards improving the understanding of the complex reality of informal sector firms in francophone West Africa. It innovates by concentrating on informal firms rather than informal employment (as other studies do), and identifying \u27large informal\u27 sector firms whose sales rival those of large formal-sector firms but operate in ways that are similar to small informal operators. Not only is the regulatory environment facing these two types of informal firms distinct, but policies aimed at improving their productivity need to be differentiated. This study focuses on the urban informal sector in three capital cities: Dakar (Senegal), Cotonou (Benin), and Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso). The study also breaks new ground with an eclectic methodology and primary data collection. Quantitative and qualitative firm-level data were collected involving a unique and fruitful collaboration among academic researchers, government officials, the West African economic and monetary union commission, informal and formal sector business associations, and labor unions. This volume represents the culmination of a long collaboration between the Centre de Recherches Economiques Appliquees (CREA) at the University Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar and the World Bank

Exploring break-points and interaction effects among predictors of the international digital divide

Cataloged from PDF version of article. The deepening of the digital divide between countries has prompted international organizations and governments to work together toward reducing the problem over the next 15 years. However, such efforts will likely succeed only if they are based on a firm grasp of the divide's underlying causes. In this paper we report the results of a comprehensive analysis of the determinants of the international digital divide. Our results confirm many findings of past research, but also extend existing knowledge in important ways. By employing Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS), we discover non-linearities and interaction effects among the predictors. We then articulate significant policy implications based upon these findings

Barrier potential for laser written graphitic wires in diamond

    Get PDF
Diamond substrates supporting an internal array of conductive graphitic wires inscribed by a femtosecond pulse laser, are useful for the detection of ionising radiation in a range of applications. Various parameters involved in the laser fabrication process were investigated in this paper to understand their impact on the electrical properties of the wires. The study revealed an effect, whereby the wires exhibit insulating behaviour until a barrier potential is overcome. When high enough voltages are applied, the wires display ohmic behaviour. The magnitude of the barrier potential, which in some cases exceeds 300 V, is shown to be strongly dependent on the laser fabrication parameters. Through process optimisation, the potential barrier may be minimised and effectively removed, coinciding with reduced values of the wire resistance
