Infertility in Muslim Refugees: A Review of the Literature
Many couples worldwide are affected by infertility, which is defined as an inability to conceive after at least one year of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. Many Muslim and Middle Eastern societies place a high societal value on having children and therefore, couples who are unable to conceive for various reasons often find themselves feeling stigmatized and socially isolated. Muslim refugees living in the United States face additional challenges and barriers to care due to their refugee status. This review is a synthesis of existing literature that 1) identifies Islamic viewpoints on infertility and assistive reproductive technology (ART), 2) explores the psychosocial impact of infertility for Muslim refugees, and 3) identifies barriers to care for this population. A PubMed search was conducted which yielded 592 records. After screening and removal of duplicates, 37 full-length texts were included for review. Key findings included different religious perspectives regarding various forms of ART between the two major sects of Islam (Sunni and Shia), significant social stigma and stress from infertility, and barriers to care such as high cost of treatment. Future research is needed in this area to better provide culturally competent care to Muslim couples experiencing infertility
Novel potential interacting partners of fibronectin in spontaneous animal model of interstitial cystitis
Feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) is the only spontaneous animal model for human interstitial cystitis (IC), as both possess a distinctive chronical and relapsing character. Underlying pathomechanisms of both diseases are not clearly established yet. We recently detected increased urine fibronectin levels in FIC cases. The purpose of this study was to gain further insight into the pathogenesis by assessing interacting partners of fibronectin in urine of FIC affected cats. Several candidate proteins were identified via immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry. Considerable changes in FIC conditions compared to physiological expression of co-purified proteins were detected by Western blot and immunohistochemistry. Compared to controls, complement C4a and thioredoxin were present in higher levels in urine of FIC patients whereas loss of signal intensity was detected in FIC affected tissue. Galectin-7 was exclusively detected in urine of FIC cats, pointing to an important role of this molecule in FIC pathogenesis. Moderate physiological signal intensity of galectin-7 in transitional epithelium shifted to distinct expression in transitional epithelium under pathophysiological conditions. I-FABP expression was reduced in urine and urinary bladder tissue of FIC cats. Additionally, transduction molecules of thioredoxin, NF-κB p65 and p38 MAPK, were examined. In FIC affected tissue, colocalization of thioredoxin and NF-κB p65 could be demonstrated compared to absent coexpression of thioredoxin and p38 MAPK. These considerable changes in expression level and pattern point to an important role for co-purified proteins of fibronectin and thioredoxin-regulated signal transduction pathways in FIC pathogenesis. These results could provide a promising starting point for novel therapeutic approaches in the future
Defining fishers in the South African context: subsistence, artisanal and small-scale commercial sectors
Evolution of a new policy for the management of marine fisheries in South Africa led to the Marine Living Resources Act of 1998 (MLRA). Among other innovations, this requires that management strategies be developed for subsistence fisheries. As a prerequisite, definitions and criteria are needed to identify and distinguish them. To achieve this, the Chief Director of Marine & Coastal Management (MCM), the authority responsible for
managing marine fisheries, appointed a Subsistence Fisheries Task Group (SFTG) to make recommendations about definitions and modes of management. The process involved successive surveys and consultations with fishing communities, communication with MCM, and a national workshop of all participants. This led to consensus about the following definition:
Subsistence fishers are poor people who personally harvest marine resources as a source of food or to sell them to meet the basic needs of food security; they operate on or near to the shore or in estuaries, live in close proximity to the resource, consume or sell the resources locally, use low-technology gear (often as part of a long-standing community-based or cultural practice), and the kinds of resources they harvest generate only sufficient returns to meet the basic needs of food security.
This definition builds on the facts that existing subsistence fisheries are usually: (1) local operations; (2) customary, traditional or cultural; (3) undertaken for personal or family use; (4) primarily for nutritional needs (though excess resources may be sold to ensure food security); (5) based on minimal technology; and (6) undertaken by people with low cash incomes. They are specifically non-commercial and non-recreational. The definition was designed to allow protection of the rights of these people and sustainability of the resources. While developing this definition, it became obvious that the definition of “commercial fishing” in the MLRA is also inadequate, and a new definition was developed. Commercial fisheries span a wide spectrum, and the SFTG defined “small-scale commercial fishers” as a distinct component that has not received adequate attention, and for whom specific management plans need to be developed. They are distinguished by living on or close to the coast, having a history of involvement with fishing, being personally involved in hands-on day-to-day running of their enterprises, operating with limited amounts of capital investment and low levels of technology, and employing small numbers of people.Keywords: defining subsistence, fisheries management, subsistence fishersAfrican Journal of Marine Science 2002, 24: 475–48
Ring-Pattern Dynamics in Smectic-C* and Smectic-C_A* Freely Suspended Liquid Crystal Films
Ring patterns of concentric 2pi-solitons in molecular orientation, form in
freely suspended chiral smectic-C films in response to an in-plane rotating
electric field. We present measurements of the zero-field relaxation of ring
patterns and of the driven dynamics of ring formation under conditions of
synchronous winding, and a simple model which enables their quantitative
description in low polarization DOBAMBC. In smectic C_A* TFMHPOBC we observe an
odd-even layer number effect, with odd number layer films exhibiting order of
magnitude slower relaxation rates than even layer films. We show that this rate
difference is due to much larger spontaneous polarization in odd number layer

A non-pharmacological intervention to manage behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia and reduce caregiver distress: Design and methods of project ACT3
Project ACT is a randomized controlled trial designed to test the effectiveness of a non-pharmacological home-based intervention to reduce behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and caregiver distress. The study targets 272 stressed racially diverse family caregivers providing in-home care to persons with moderate stage dementia with one or more behavioral disturbances. All participants are interviewed at baseline, 4-months (main trial endpoint), and 6-months (maintenance). The four-month intervention involves up to 13 visits from an occupational therapist who works with families to problem-solve potential triggers (communication style, environmental clutter) contributing to behaviors, and instruct in strategies to reduce caregiver stress and manage targeted behaviors. To rule out infection or other potential medical contributors to behaviors, a nurse obtains blood and urine samples from the dementia patient, and conducts a medication review. Participants in the no-treatment control group are offered the nurse arm and one in-home session following trial completion at 6-months. This paper describes the research methods, theoretical and clinical aspects of this multi-component, targeted psycho-social treatment approach, and the measures used to evaluate quality of life improvements for persons with dementia and their families
Comprehensive assessment of a peer mentor program for first-year students
College students who engage in first-year programs such as peer mentorship are correlated with higher achievement. Peer mentorship can also have a significant impact on students\u27 feelings of belonging to their campus community. This mixed-methods study will provide a comprehensive assessment of a Class Leader (CL) program. Data will include first-semester outcomes (i.e., first-term GPA; retention) for all students (N ~ 1850) and first-generation students as compared to non-participants, survey responses (n ~ 471) about students\u27 experiences with CLs and perceptions related to the program, and focus group data from students, CLs, and instructors at the end of the semester
Src phosphorylation converts Mdm2 from a ubiquitinating to a neddylating E3 ligase
Murine double minute-2 protein (Mdm2) is a multifaceted phosphorylated protein that plays a role in regulating numerous proteins including the tumor suppressor protein p53. Mdm2 binds to and is involved in conjugating either ubiquitin or Nedd8 (Neural precursor cell expressed, developmentally down-regulated 8) to p53. Although regulation of the E3 ubiquitin activity of Mdm2 has been investigated, regulation of the neddylating activity of Mdm2 remains to be defined. Here we show that activated c-Src kinase phosphorylates Y281 and Y302 of Mdm2, resulting in an increase in Mdm2 stability and its association with Ubc12, the E2 enzyme of the neddylating complex. Mdm2-dependent Nedd8 conjugation of p53 results in transcriptionally inactive p53, a process that is reversed with a small molecule inhibitor to either Src or Ubc12. Thus, our studies reveal how Mdm2 may neutralize and elevate p53 in actively proliferating cells and also provides a rationale for using therapies that target the Nedd8 pathway in wild-type p53 tumors
The Infrared Behavior of Gluon and Ghost Propagators in Landau Gauge QCD
A solvable systematic truncation scheme for the Dyson-Schwinger equations of
Euclidean QCD in Landau gauge is presented. It implements the Slavnov-Taylor
identities for the three-gluon and ghost-gluon vertices, whereas irreducible
four-gluon couplings as well as the gluon-ghost and ghost-ghost scattering
kernels are neglected. The infrared behavior of gluon and ghost propagators is
obtained analytically: The gluon propagator vanishes for small spacelike
momenta whereas the ghost propagator diverges stronger than a massless particle
pole. The numerical solutions are compared with recent lattice data for these
propagators. The running coupling of the renormalization scheme approaches a
