Selective deposition of silver and copper films by condensation coefficient modulation
Whilst copper and silver are the conductors of choice for myriad current and emerging applications, patterning these metals is a slow and costly process. We report the remarkable finding that an extremely thin (∼10 nm) printed layer of specific organofluorine compounds enables selective deposition of copper and silver vapour, with metal condensing only where the organofluorine layer is not. This unconventional approach is fast, inexpensive, avoids metal waste and the use of harmful chemical etchants, and leaves the metal surface uncontaminated. We have used this approach to fabricate thin films of these metals with 6 million apertures cm−2 and grids of ∼1 μm lines, through to 10 cm diameter apertures. We have also fabricated semi-transparent organic solar cells in which the top silver electrode is patterned with a dense array of 2 μm diameter apertures, which cannot be achieved by any other scalable means directly on an organic electronic device

Advanced Feature Extraction and Dimensionality Reduction for Unmanned Underwater Vehicle Fault Diagnosis
This paper presents a novel approach to the diagnosis of blade faults in an electric thruster motor of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) under stationary operating conditions. The diagnostic approach is based on the use of discrete wavelet transforms (DWT) as a feature extraction tool and a dynamic neural network (DNN) for fault classification. The DNN classifies between healthy and faulty conditions of the trolling motor by analyzing the stator current and vibration signals. To overcome feature redundancy, which affects diagnosis reliability, the Orthogonal Fuzzy Neighbourhood Discriminant Analysis (OFNDA) approach is found to be the most effective. Four faulty conditions were analyzed under laboratory conditions, and the results obtained from experiment demonstrate the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed methodology in classifying the different faults faster and more accurately
Determinants of intraregional migration in Sub-Saharan Africa 1980-2000
Despite great accomplishments in the migration literature, the determinants of South-South migration remain poorly understood. In an attempt to fill this gap, this paper formulates and tests an empirical model for intraregional migration in sub-Saharan Africa within an extended human capital framework, taking into account spatial interaction. Using bilateral panel data between 1980 and 2000, we find that intraregional migration on the subcontinent is predominantly driven by economic opportunities and sociopolitics in the host country, facilitated by geographical proximity. The role played by network effects and environmental conditions is also apparent. Finally, origin and destination spatial dependence should definitely not be ignored
Retarding oxidation of copper nanoparticles without electrical isolation and the size dependence of work function
Copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) are attractive as a low-cost alternative to their gold and silver analogues for numerous applications, although their potential has hardly been explored due to their higher susceptibility to oxidation in air. Here we show the unexpected findings of an investigation into the correlation between the air-stability of CuNPs and the structure of the thiolate capping ligand: Of the 8 different ligands screened, those with the shortest alkyl chain, -(CH2)2- , and a hydrophilic carboxylic acid end group are found to be the most effective at retarding oxidation in air. We also show that CuNPs are not etched by thiol solutions as previously reported, and address the important fundamental question of how the work function of small supported metal particles scales with particle size. Together these findings set the stage for greater utility of CuNPs for emerging electronic applications
Measuring Metacognition in Cancer: Validation of the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30 (MCQ-30)
Objective
The Metacognitions Questionnaire 30 assesses metacognitive beliefs and processes which are central to the metacognitive model of emotional disorder. As recent studies have begun to explore the utility of this model for understanding emotional distress after cancer diagnosis, it is important also to assess the validity of the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30 for use in cancer populations.
Methods
229 patients with primary breast or prostate cancer completed the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30 and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale pre-treatment and again 12 months later. The structure and validity of the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30 were assessed using factor analyses and structural equation modelling.
Results
Confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses provided evidence supporting the validity of the previously published 5-factor structure of the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30. Specifically, both pre-treatment and 12 months later, this solution provided the best fit to the data and all items loaded on their expected factors. Structural equation modelling indicated that two dimensions of metacognition (positive and negative beliefs about worry) were significantly associated with anxiety and depression as predicted, providing further evidence of validity.
Conclusions
These findings provide initial evidence that the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30 is a valid measure for use in cancer populations

Utilizing multimedia tools for LRAM project documentation and marketing
Land Rehabilitation and Maintenance program managers at U.S. Army Training Installations must present technical material relating to LRAM projects to a variety of audiences, ranging from installation commanders to installation visitors and environmental interest groups. These audiences may play a role in approving and/or funding LRAM projects. Effective communication to these audiences can facilitate the achievement of LRAM program objectives. The rapid development of computer-based multimedia technology provides LRAM managers with powerful tools for creating highly effective project presentations that can be presented from notebook computers for use in briefings or distributed on CD-ROM for use on desktop computers. This paper presents an example of use of multimedia to document and present an LRAM revegetation project conducted at the Freiholser Forst Local Training Area in Germany. This CD-ROM presentation makes extensive use of digitized photos, video, maps, and text to present a detailed summary of the project, including project justification, background, methods, costs, and results. The application design allows the viewer to select topics of particular interest for detailed examination and to omit other topics or examine them in less detail. Virtually every important revegetation procedure is presented in photographs supplemented by brief video clips and text. Interactive charts allow easy comparison of alternative revegetation procedures that use different combinations of soil amendments, seedbed preparation, and seed mixes. Slide sequences and video clips clearly illustrate differences between conditions before and after the LRAM project was conducted. The presentation will be used to brief commanding officers, installation visitors, and host country officials about this highly successful LRAM project
