A Chain of Dark Clouds in Projection Against the Galactic Center

In the J, H, and Ks bands survey of the the Galactic Center region over an area of 2deg x 5deg, we have found many dark clouds, among which a distinguished chain of dark clouds can be identified with a quiescent CO cloud. The distances of the clouds is estimated to be 3.2-4.2 kpc, corresponding to the Norma arm by our new method to determine distance to dark clouds using the cumulative number of stars against J-Ks colors. Adopting these estimated distances, the size is about 70 pc in length and the total mass of the cloud is 6x10^4 M_solar. Three compact HII regions harbor in the cloud, indicating that star forming activities are going on at the cores of the quiescent CO cloud on the spiral arm.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in PAS

A JWST/NIRSpec First Census of Broad-Line AGNs at z=4-7: Detection of 10 Faint AGNs with M_BH~10^6-10^8 M_sun and Their Host Galaxy Properties

We present a first statistical sample of faint type-1 AGNs at z>4z>4 identified by JWST/NIRSpec deep spectroscopy. Among the 185 galaxies at zspec=3.88.9z_\mathrm{spec}=3.8-8.9 confirmed with NIRSpec, our systematic search for broad-line emission reveals 10 type-1 AGNs at z=4.0156.936z=4.015-6.936 whose broad component is only seen in the permitted Hα\alpha line and not in the forbidden [OIII]λ\lambda5007 line that is detected with greater significance than Hα\alpha. The broad Hα\alpha line widths of $\mathrm{FWHM}\simeq1000-6000\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}suggestthattheAGNshavelowmassblackholeswith suggest that the AGNs have low-mass black holes with M_\mathrm{BH}\sim10^6-10^8\ M_\odot,remarkablylowerthanthoseoflowluminosityquasarspreviouslyidentifiedat, remarkably lower than those of low-luminosity quasars previously identified at z>4withgroundbasedtelescopes.JWSTandHSThighresolutionimagesrevealthatthemajorityofthemshowextendedmorphologiesindicatingsignificantcontributiontothetotallightsfromtheirhostgalaxies,exceptforthreecompactobjectstwoofwhichshowredSEDs,probablyinatransitionphasefromfaintAGNstolowluminosityquasars.CarefulAGNhostdecompositionanalysesshowthattheirhostsstellarmassesaresystematicallylowerthanthelocalrelationbetweentheblackholemassandthestellarmass,implyingafastblackholegrowthconsistentwithpredictionsfromtheoreticalsimulations.AhighfractionofthebroadlineAGNs( with ground-based telescopes. JWST and HST high-resolution images reveal that the majority of them show extended morphologies indicating significant contribution to the total lights from their host galaxies, except for three compact objects two of which show red SEDs, probably in a transition phase from faint AGNs to low luminosity quasars. Careful AGN-host decomposition analyses show that their host's stellar masses are systematically lower than the local relation between the black hole mass and the stellar mass, implying a fast black hole growth consistent with predictions from theoretical simulations. A high fraction of the broad-line AGNs (\sim5\%),higherthan), higher than z\sim0,indicatesthatanumberdensityofsuchfaintAGNsishigherthananextrapolationofthequasarluminosityfunction,implyingalargepopulationofAGNsincludingtype1andtype2intheearlyuniverse.SuchfaintAGNscontributetocosmicreionization,whilethetotalcontributionisnotlarge,upto, indicates that a number density of such faint AGNs is higher than an extrapolation of the quasar luminosity function, implying a large population of AGNs including type 1 and type 2 in the early universe. Such faint AGNs contribute to cosmic reionization, while the total contribution is not large, up to \sim50\%at at z\sim6$, because of their faint nature.Comment: 24 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

Bortezomib Reduces the Tumorigenicity of Multiple Myeloma via Downregulation of Upregulated Targets in Clonogenic Side Population Cells

Side population (SP) cells in cancers, including multiple myeloma, exhibit tumor-initiating characteristics. In the present study, we isolated SP cells from human myeloma cell lines and primary tumors to detect potential therapeutic targets specifically expressed in SP cells. We found that SP cells from myeloma cell lines (RPMI 8226, AMO1, KMS-12-BM, KMS-11) express CD138 and that non-SP cells include a CD138-negative population. Serial transplantation of SP and non-SP cells into NOD/Shi-scid IL-2 gamma nul mice revealed that clonogenic myeloma SP cells are highly tumorigenic and possess a capacity for self-renewal. Gene expression analysis showed that SP cells from five MM cell lines (RPMI 8226, AMO1, KMS-12-BM, KMS-11, JJN3) express genes involved in the cell cycle and mitosis (e. g., CCNB1, CDC25C, CDC2, BIRC5, CENPE, SKA1, AURKB, KIFs, TOP2A, ASPM), polycomb (e. g., EZH2, EPC1) and ubiquitin-proteasome (e. g., UBE2D3, UBE3C, PSMA5) more strongly than do non-SP cells. Moreover, CCNB1, AURKB, EZH2 and PSMA5 were also upregulated in the SPs from eight primary myeloma samples. On that basis, we used an aurora kinase inhibitor (VX-680) and a proteasome inhibitor (bortezomib) with RPMI 8226 and AMO1 cells to determine whether these agents could be used to selectively target the myeloma SP. We found that both these drugs reduced the SP fraction, though bortezomib did so more effectively than VX-680 due to its ability to reduce levels of both phospho-histone H3 (p-hist. H3) and EZH2; VX-680 reduced only p-hist. H3. This is the first report to show that certain oncogenes are specifically expressed in the myeloma SP, and that bortezomib effectively downregulates expression of their products. Our approach may be useful for screening new agents with which to target a cell population possessing strong tumor initiating potential in multiple myeloma

Structural Features and Biological Properties of Ellagitannins in Some Plant Families of the Order Myrtales

Plant tannins, including hydrolysable and condensed varieties, are well known antioxidants in medicinal plants, foods, and edible fruits. Their diverse biological properties and potential for disease prevention have been demonstrated by various in vitro and in vivo assays. A number of ellagitannins, the largest group of hydrolysable tannins, have been isolated from dicotyledoneous angiosperms and characterized. This diverse class of tannins is sub-grouped into simple ellagitannins, C-glycosidic ellagitannins, complex tannins (condensates of C-glycosidic tannins with flavan-3-ol), and oligomers up to pentamers. This review outlines and describes the chemotaxonomic significance of structural features in various types of ellagitannins found in plants belonging to the Myrtaceae, Onagraceae, and Melastomataceae families, which are all included in the order Myrtales. Any biological activities that have been reported, including antitumor and antibacterial effects as well as enzyme inhibition, are also reviewed

The first step we propose is to acquire the external research grants from public resources. The specific proposal is described in grant application to increase the probability of successful adoption of the grant from the Ministry of Education and Science of Japan

EMPRESS. IX. Extremely Metal-Poor Galaxies are Very Gas-Rich Dispersion-Dominated Systems: Will JWST Witness Gaseous Turbulent High-z Primordial Galaxies?

We present kinematics of 6 local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) with low metallicities (0.0160.098 Z0.016-0.098\ Z_{\odot}) and low stellar masses (104.7107.6M10^{4.7}-10^{7.6} M_{\odot}). Taking deep medium-high resolution (R7500R\sim7500) integral-field spectra with 8.2-m Subaru, we resolve the small inner velocity gradients and dispersions of the EMPGs with Hα\alpha emission. Carefully masking out sub-structures originated by inflow and/or outflow, we fit 3-dimensional disk models to the observed Hα\alpha flux, velocity, and velocity-dispersion maps. All the EMPGs show rotational velocities (vrotv_{\rm rot}) of 5--23 km s1^{-1} smaller than the velocity dispersions (σ0\sigma_{0}) of 17--31 km s1^{-1}, indicating dispersion-dominated (vrot/σ0=0.290.80<1v_{\rm rot}/\sigma_{0}=0.29-0.80<1) systems affected by inflow and/or outflow. Except for two EMPGs with large uncertainties, we find that the EMPGs have very large gas-mass fractions of fgas0.91.0f_{\rm gas}\simeq 0.9-1.0. Comparing our results with other Hα\alpha kinematics studies, we find that vrot/σ0v_{\rm rot}/\sigma_{0} decreases and fgasf_{\rm gas} increases with decreasing metallicity, decreasing stellar mass, and increasing specific star-formation rate. We also find that simulated high-zz (z7z\sim 7) forming galaxies have gas fractions and dynamics similar to the observed EMPGs. Our EMPG observations and the simulations suggest that primordial galaxies are gas-rich dispersion-dominated systems, which would be identified by the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations at z7z\sim 7.Comment: Submitted to ApJ; After revisio

A non-papillary and broad-based tumor was located in the trigone and bladder neck on cystoscopic examination. Pelvic magnetic resonance imaging in T2-weighted images revealed a mass invading into the muscular layer of the bladder wall. Histologic examination of bladder cup-biopsy specimens showed adenocarcinoma. She underwent total cystectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection. Histologically, the tumor was chiefly composed of cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm and partly of cells with clear cytoplasm or hobnail-shaped cells, arranged in tubular or papillary structures, and infiltrated peri-vesical fat tissues. She died of metastatic disease 22 months after surgery. To the best of our knowledge, the present case is the 19th reported in the literature
