Evidence Based Complementary Intervention for Insomnia
Increasing scientific evidence point to a non-pharmacological
complementary treatment for insomnia: white noise. Its presentation
has been shown to induce sleep in human neonates and adults,
probably by reducing the signal-to-noise ratio of ambient sound.
White noise may be a simple, safe, cost-effective alternative to
hypnotic medication in many psychiatric disorders, especially acute
stress disorder and PTSD
Molecular Gas during the Post-Starburst Phase: Low Gas Fractions in Green Valley Seyfert Post-Starburst Galaxies
Post-starbursts (PSBs) are candidate for rapidly transitioning from
star-bursting to quiescent galaxies. We study the molecular gas evolution of
PSBs at z ~ 0.03 - 0.2. We undertook new CO (2-1) observations of 22 Seyfert
PSBs candidates using the ARO Submillimeter Telescope. This sample complements
previous samples of PSBs by including green valley PSBs with Seyfert-like
emission, allowing us to analyze for the first time the molecular gas
properties of 116 PSBs with a variety of AGN properties. The distribution of
molecular gas to stellar mass fractions in PSBs is significantly different than
normal star-forming galaxies in the COLD GASS survey. The combined samples of
PSBs with Seyfert-like emission line ratios have a gas fraction distribution
which is even more significantly different and is broader (~ 0.03-0.3). Most of
them have lower gas fractions than normal star-forming galaxies. We find a
highly significant correlation between the WISE 12 micron to 4.6 micron flux
ratios and molecular gas fractions in both PSBs and normal galaxies. We detect
molecular gas in 27% of our Seyfert PSBs. Taking into account the upper limits,
the mean and the dispersion of the distribution of the gas fraction in our
Seyfert PSB sample are much smaller (mean = 0.025, std dev. = 0.018) than
previous samples of Seyfert PSBs or PSBs in general (mean ~ 0.1 - 0.2, std dev.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is characterized by degeneration and atrophy of skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscles after a latent period of apparently normal development and function. The gastrointestinal manifestations start in the second decade of life and are mainly due to atrophy of smooth muscle layers. Refractory gastroparesis and chronic constipation can lead to severe gastric and small bowel dilatation, which can be life threatening. Small ruminant production in coffee-based mixed crop-livestock system of Western Ethiopian Highlands: Status and prospectus for improvement
The study was conducted in Goma district of Jimma Zone of Ethiopia with the objectives of documenting the reasons why farmers in coffee dominant mixed-farming systems of western Ethiopia keep small ruminants, and identifying the constraints and opportunities for improvement of this sector. Results are based on diagnostic survey of 160 sample households, group discussions and personal observation. The study district was stratified into three groups based on flock distribution as: sheep dominating, goat dominating and mixed flock sites. The average land holding per household was 1.93 ha. In Goma where coffee and chat are the major cash sources for farmers, small ruminant are also primarily kept for cash generation as reported by 94% of the sampled households. The second main reason for keeping small ruminant in the study area was for saving mainly in time of coffee failure. Keeping small ruminants as a source of manure was the third important reason. From the interviewed households, 59.4, 32.1, 23.5, and 19.4% of them utilize communal grazing, aftermath grazing, roadside grazing, and riverside grazing, respectively for their animal as a sources of feed. Most small ruminants are either tethered or herded all the seasons due to the cultivation of perennial crops and predators. All small ruminants are housed for protection from adverse weather conditions and predators. The major problems for small ruminant production and marketing were: feed and grazing land shortage, lack of input, predators, diseases and parasites and marketing problems. In order to exploit the current growing demand of small ruminant meat at local and international markets, research and development interventions are required with regard to the identification of alternative feed resources and strategic feeding management, identification of causes of diseases and their control methods and improving marketing efficiency through appropriate policy
Aspergillus species and aflatoxin contamination in pepper (Capsicum annuum l.) in West Gojjam, Ethiopia
Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is an important spice and source of income for smallholder producers in Ethiopia. Since the larger proportion is for the market, it takes a significant share of the national income from export commodity. However, often the product was rejected by some of the European Union markets due to the maximum aflatoxin level accumulations beyond their acceptable limits. So, the present study was carried out to highlight the importance of Aspergillus species invasion in pepper, and levels of aflatoxin contamination at maturity in the field (pod form), farmers' storage and local market (powder form) in West Gojjam, Ethiopia. A total of 135 pepper samples were collected from three districts of West Gojjam (Burie, Jabitehnan, and Fnoteselam), Ethiopia for fungal and aflatoxin analysis. The producers used a pre-validated structured questionnaire to obtain information on pepper production practices. Aspergillus species isolates were recovered using potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium and counting was through dilution method (cfu g-1). The pepper pods were ground to a fine powder for aflatoxin analysis using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). The prevalence of infected samples revealed that, pre-harvest samples (51%) were less infected by Aspergillus species, compared to local markets (65 %) and storage (79 %). Aspergillus flavus species were recovered in pre-harvest samples, whilst A. niger were found in local market samples. Aflatoxin contamination at pre-harvest, storage, and local market were 10, 47, and 42 % with levels which ranged from non-detected to 10.6, 0.3 - 17.1 and 3.1 - 19.2 ppb, respectively. The mean aflatoxin concentration detected from storage samples (10.6 ppb) and local market (12.6 ppb) were found to be above the tolerable limits set by EU (5 ppb) in pepper products. From the findings in this study, proper drying, physical separation of molded pods and use of clean storage structures should be implemented along the production chain in order to reduce aflatoxin contamination in pepper in Ethiopia
Shrinkage Estimation Using Ranked Set Samples
The purpose of this article is two-fold. First, we consider the ranked set sampling (RSS) estimation and testing hypothesis for the parameter of interest (population mean). Then, we suggest some alternative estimation strategies for the mean parameter based on shrinkage and pretest principles. Generally speaking, the shrinkage and pretest methods use the non-sample information (NSI) regarding that parameter of interest. In practice, NSI is readily available in the form of a realistic conjecture based on the experimenter\u27s knowledge and experience with the problem under consideration. It is advantageous to use NSI in the estimation process to construct improved estimation for the parameter of interest. In this contribution, the large sample properties of the suggested estimators will be assessed, both analytically and numerically. More importantly, a Monte Carlo simulation is conducted to investigate the relative performance of the estimators for moderate and large samples. For illustrative purposes, the proposed methodology is applied to a published data set. © 2011 King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals
From Starburst to Quiescence: Testing AGN feedback in Rapidly Quenching Post-Starburst Galaxies
Post-starbursts are galaxies in transition from the blue cloud to the red
sequence. Although they are rare today, integrated over time they may be an
important pathway to the red sequence. This work uses SDSS, GALEX, and WISE
observations to identify the evolutionary sequence from starbursts to fully
quenched post-starbursts in the narrow mass range , and identifies "transiting" post-starbursts which are intermediate
between these two populations. In this mass range, of galaxies are
starbursts, are quenched post-starbursts, and are the
transiting types in between. The transiting post-starbursts have stellar
properties that are predicted for fast-quenching starbursts and morphological
characteristics that are already typical of early-type galaxies. The AGN
fraction, as estimated from optical line ratios, of these post-starbursts is
about 3 times higher () than that of normal star-forming
galaxies of the same mass, but there is a significant delay between the
starburst phase and the peak of nuclear optical AGN activity (median age
difference of Myr), in agreement with previous studies.
The time delay is inferred by comparing the broad-band near NUV-to-optical
photometry with stellar population synthesis models. We also find that
starbursts and post-starbursts are significantly more dust-obscured than normal
star-forming galaxies in the same mass range. About of the starbursts
and of the transiting post-starbursts can be classified as the
"Dust-Obscured Galaxies" (DOGs), while only of normal galaxies are
DOGs.The time delay between the starburst phase and AGN activity suggests that
AGN do not play a primary role in the original quenching of starbursts but may
be responsible for quenching later low-level star formation during the
