    The purpose of this paper is to give oscillation criteria for the third order delay nonlinear differential equation \begin{equation*} \lbrack a_{2}(t)\{(a_{1}(t)(x^{\prime }(t))^{\alpha _{1}})^{\prime}\}^{\alpha _{2}}]^{\prime }+q(t)f(x(g(t)))=0, \end{equation*} via comparison with some first differential equations whose oscillatory characters are known. Our results generalize and improve some known results for oscillation of third order nonlinear differential equations. Some examples are given to illustrate the main results

    IMPACT OF SCHOOL TYPE, SCHOOL POPULATION AND SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS OF STUDENT'S ACADEMIC Abstract PERFORMANCE

    The study investigated the influence of school type, school population and socioeconomic status of parents on secondary students' academic performance. Three hypotheses were postulated and tested at .05 level of significance. Survey research design was adopted to conduct the study. Participants included 680 students of public and private secondary schools in Akinyele L.GA of Oyo State selected through a simple random technique. Their age range was between 14- 18 yrs with a mean age of 15.7 yrs. The instruments used for data collection was a self-designed questionnaire that contain information on the independent variables and WASCE 2003/2004 results of participants. Results of data analysis using zero- order correlation and t-test statistical procedure indicated that the parental SES, school type, school population and general school environment can make a significant contribution to students' academic performance.     A fragment of Foley catheter balloon as a cause of Bladder stone in woman

    Urinary bladder calculi are rarely seen in women and any history of previous pelvic surgery must, therefore, raise suspicion of an iatrogenic etiology. According to the literature, fewer than 2% of all bladder calculi occur in female subjects and, thus, their presence should provoke careful assessment of the etiology. We report one case of a fragment of Foley catheter balloon as a cause of Bladder stone in 28 years old woman. Weanalyzed the diagnosis, aspect and therapeutic management of this case which is the first described in literature to our knowledge

    Identification and Determination of concentrations of some Toxic alkaloids in Jimsonweed (Datura stramonium L.)

    Alkaloids are regarded as complex naturally occurring products of plants and fungi. They possess nitrogen-containing heterocyclic rings, basic and derived from amino acids. High physiological activity is also a characteristic of alkaloids. This study was aimed to determine the existence and concentrations of some toxic alkaloids in different parts of jimsonweed (Datura stramonium L.) of the family Solanaceae. Stems, leaves and fruits were dried, crushed and then underwent extraction. Solvents used in the extraction were chloroform and acetic acid. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) and GC-MS techniques were also adopted in analyzing the alkaloids. The results revealed the presence of atropine in stems, leaves and fruits of D. stramonium with concentrations of 0.03, 0.4 and 0.08 mg/g, respectively. Hyoscine was also found in stems, leaves and fruits with concentrations of 0.01, 0.02 and 0.2 mg/g, respectively. Nicotine was found in stems and fruits with concentrations of 0.001 and 0.02 mg/g, respectively. This study showed and provided the possibility of exploring new natural potential pesticides from Sudanese indigenous plants and provide important information to avoid toxicity, harmful and adverse effects of these plants to both humans and animals

    Periaxonal K+ regulation in the small squid Alloteuthis. Studies on isolated and in situ axons

    A novel giant axon preparation from the squid Alloteuthis is described. Properties of in situ and isolated axons are similar. Periaxonal K+ accumulation is a function of the physiological state of the animal and of the axon and its sheathing layers. Carefully dissected isolated axons, and axons in situ in a healthy mantle, show much less K+ accumulation than previously reported in squid. It is suggested that the Schwann cells are involved in the observed K+ regulation

    Artisans’ knowledge and perception on hand-dug well waterborne related diseases in Dutse mechanic village north-west, Nigeria

    This study was conducted to assess the knowledge and perception of artisans in Dutse mechanic village regarding hand-dug well waterborne related diseases with the aid of questionnaire. Data were collected from seventy (70) respondents on selected personal attributes and analyzed using descriptive statistics. All the respondents indicated that there are two (2) wells in the mechanic village. The study revealed that a high proportion (80%) of the respondents actively repair automobiles while 4.3% take part in various trading activities. Majority (70%) of the respondents indicated that microbial pollutants can cause waterborne diseases while minority (30%) of the respondent reported a contrary view. Respondents (7.1%) reported to have been diagnosed of waterborne diseases while majority (92.9%) of the respondents reported that they have not been diagnosed of any water borne disease. However, respondents diagnosed of waterborne diseases specified diarrhoea (1.4%), typhoid (1.4%) and urinary tract infection (4.3%). It can be concluded that the artisans are lackadaisical towards ensuring hygienic maintenance of the wells as clearly revealed in the results obtained in this study. It is recommended that the wells in the village should be covered when not in use coupled with drawing water with a well-kept fetcher devoid of microbial loads.Keywords: Hand-dug well, microbial pollutants, waterborne diseases, mechanic villag

    Synthesis and properties of polyelectrolyte multilayered microcapsules reinforced smart coatings

    The present research work focuses on the synthesis, characterization and properties of novel polyelectrolyte multilayered microcapsules used as smart additives in organic coatings for corrosion protection of steel parts. Urea formaldehyde microcapsules encapsulated with linalyl acetate (UFMCs), sensitive to mechanical stimulus, were synthesized by in situ emulsion polymerization technique. In the next step, dodecylamine, working as a pH stimulus corrosion inhibitor, was loaded into layers of polyelectrolyte molecules, polyethylenimine (PEI) and sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK). These were applied layer-by-layer over the microcapsules to form inhibitor containing multilayered urea formaldehyde microcapsules (MLUFMCs). In the next step, MLUFMCs (5.0 wt%) and UFMCs (5.0 wt%) were thoroughly dispersed into the epoxy resin and coated on cleaned steel. A comparison of the structural, thermal and anticorrosive properties indicates that coatings modified with multilayered capsules (PMLSCs) demonstrate good thermal stability, improved self-healing characteristics and higher corrosion resistance compared to the coating modified with urea formaldehyde microcapsules. The improved properties of PMLSCs can be attributed to efficient release of the encapsulated self-healing agent and corrosion inhibitor from the MLUFMCs. Therefore, epoxy coatings modified with the novel multilayered capsules may be attractive for corrosion protection of steel parts used in oil and gas and related industries. - 2019, The Author(s).Open Access funding provided by the Qatar National Library.     Pharmacokinetic–Pharmacodynamic Modelling in Hemophilia A:Relating Thrombin and Plasmin Generation to Factor VIII Activity After Administration of a VWF/FVIII Concentrate

    Background: Hemophilia A patients are treated with factor (F) VIII prophylactically to prevent bleeding. In general, dosage and frequency are based on pharmacokinetic measurements. Ideally, an alternative dose adjustment can be based on the hemostatic potential, measured with a thrombin generation assay (TGA), like the Nijmegen hemostasis assay. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the predicted performance of a previously developed pharmacokinetic–pharmacodynamic model for FVIII replacement therapy, relating FVIII dose and FVIII activity levels with thrombin and plasmin generation parameters. Methods: Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic measurements were obtained from 29 severe hemophilia A patients treated with pdVWF/FVIII concentrate (Haemate P®). The predictive performance of the previously developed pharmacokinetic–pharmacodynamic model was evaluated using nonlinear mixed-effects modeling (NONMEM). When predictions of FVIII activity or TGA parameters were inadequate [median prediction error (MPE) &gt; 20%], a new model was developed. Results: The original pharmacokinetic model underestimated clearance and was refined based on a two-compartment model. The pharmacodynamic model displays no bias in the observed normalized thrombin peak height and normalized thrombin potential (MPE of 6.83% and 7.46%). After re-estimating pharmacodynamic parameters, EC50 and Emax values were relatively comparable between the original model and this group. Prediction of normalized plasmin peak height was inaccurate (MPE 58.9%). Conclusion: Our predictive performance displayed adequate thrombin pharmacodynamic predictions of the original model, but a new pharmacokinetic model was required. The pharmacodynamic model is not factor specific and applicable to multiple factor concentrates. A prospective study is needed to validate the impact of the FVIII dosing pharmacodynamic model on bleeding reduction in patients.</p
