    Coach and athlete perceptions of ambiguous behaviors and sexual harassment

    The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of coaches and athletes of ambiguous behaviors (i.e. actions which may or may not be construed as sexual harassment) in order to inform curriculum development in coach education. This study replicates and extends a previous American study which examined perceptions and experiences of sexual harassment among 210 female college athletes in the USA (Volkwein, et al., 1997). The Americans’ research design was based on earlier work in education by Garlick (1994). The present study is the first, large-scale UK survey of sexual harassment among student athletes (n = 311) and coaches (n = 182). A sexual harassment questionnaire (Garlick, 1994) was adapted to a sport setting and UK context. The questionnaire contained statements regarding 19 ambiguous behaviors. Factor analysis identified four subcategories of the questionnaire: Invitations/1-to-1; Social enquiries; Invasion of personal space; Personal Enquiries. A 2 x 2 (Gender by Role) MANCOVA, with age as a covariate revealed no interaction effect (Wilk’s = .99, F (4, 481) = 1.46, p > .05), but both main effects were significant (gender Wilk’s = .93, F (4, 481) = 8.62, p < .001, role Wilk’s = .956, F (4, 481) = 5.56, p < .001). Further analysis confirmed that athletes rated each of the four sub-scales as significantly more appropriate than coaches. Females rated social enquiries and invasion of personal space as more appropriate than males

    Exclusive ρ0\rho^0 electroproduction on the proton at CLAS

    The ep→eâ€Čpρ0e p\to e^\prime p \rho^0 reaction has been measured, using the 5.754 GeV electron beam of Jefferson Lab and the CLAS detector. This represents the largest ever set of data for this reaction in the valence region. Integrated and differential cross sections are presented. The WW, Q2Q^2 and tt dependences of the cross section are compared to theoretical calculations based on tt-channel meson-exchange Regge theory on the one hand and on quark handbag diagrams related to Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) on the other hand. The Regge approach can describe at the ≈\approx 30% level most of the features of the present data while the two GPD calculations that are presented in this article which succesfully reproduce the high energy data strongly underestimate the present data. The question is then raised whether this discrepancy originates from an incomplete or inexact way of modelling the GPDs or the associated hard scattering amplitude or whether the GPD formalism is simply inapplicable in this region due to higher-twists contributions, incalculable at present.Comment: 29 pages, 29 figure

    Introgression and rapid species turnover in sympatric damselflies

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Studying contemporary hybridization increases our understanding of introgression, adaptation and, ultimately, speciation. The sister species <it>Ischnura elegans </it>and <it>I. graellsii </it>(Odonata: Coenagrionidae) are ecologically, morphologically and genetically similar and hybridize. Recently, <it>I. elegans </it>has colonized northern Spain, creating a broad sympatric region with <it>I. graellsii</it>. Here, we review the distribution of both species in Iberia and evaluate the degree of introgression of <it>I. graellsii </it>into <it>I. elegans </it>using six microsatellite markers (442 individuals from 26 populations) and five mitochondrial genes in sympatric and allopatric localities. Furthermore, we quantify the effect of hybridization on the frequencies of the genetically controlled colour polymorphism in females of both species.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In a principal component analysis of the microsatellite data, the first two principal components summarised almost half (41%) of the total genetic variation. The first axis revealed a clear separation of <it>I. graellsii </it>and <it>I</it>. <it>elegans </it>populations, while the second axis separated <it>I. elegans </it>populations. Admixture analyses showed extensive hybridization and introgression in <it>I. elegans </it>populations, consistent with <it>I. elegans </it>backcrosses and occasional F<sub>1</sub>-hybrids, suggesting hybridization is on-going. More specifically, approximately 58% of the 166 Spanish <it>I. elegans </it>individuals were assigned to the <it>I. elegans </it>backcross category, whereas not a single of those individuals was assigned to the backcross with <it>I. graellsii</it>. The mitochondrial genes held little genetic variation, and the most common haplotype was shared by the two species.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The results suggest rapid species turnover in sympatric regions in favour of <it>I. elegans</it>, corroborating previous findings that <it>I. graellsii </it>suffers a mating disadvantage in sympatry with <it>I. elegans</it>. Examination of morph frequency dynamics indicates that hybridization is likely to have important implications for the maintenance of multiple female morphs, in particular during the initial period of hybridization.</p

    Infant High-Grade Gliomas Comprise Multiple Subgroups Characterized by Novel Targetable Gene Fusions and Favorable Outcomes.

    Infant high-grade gliomas appear clinically distinct from their counterparts in older children, indicating that histopathologic grading may not accurately reflect the biology of these tumors. We have collected 241 cases under 4 years of age, and carried out histologic review, methylation profiling, and custom panel, genome, or exome sequencing. After excluding tumors representing other established entities or subgroups, we identified 130 cases to be part of an "intrinsic" spectrum of disease specific to the infant population. These included those with targetable MAPK alterations, and a large proportion of remaining cases harboring gene fusions targeting ALK (n = 31), NTRK1/2/3 (n = 21), ROS1 (n = 9), and MET (n = 4) as their driving alterations, with evidence of efficacy of targeted agents in the clinic. These data strongly support the concept that infant gliomas require a change in diagnostic practice and management. SIGNIFICANCE: Infant high-grade gliomas in the cerebral hemispheres comprise novel subgroups, with a prevalence of ALK, NTRK1/2/3, ROS1, or MET gene fusions. Kinase fusion-positive tumors have better outcome and respond to targeted therapy clinically. Other subgroups have poor outcome, with fusion-negative cases possibly representing an epigenetically driven pluripotent stem cell phenotype.See related commentary by Szulzewsky and Cimino, p. 904.This article is highlighted in the In This Issue feature, p. 890

    First measurement of target and double spin asymmetries for polarized e- polarized p --> e p pi0 in the nucleon resonance region above the Delta(1232)

    The exclusive channel polarized proton(polarized e,e prime p)pi0 was studied in the first and second nucleon resonance regions in the Q2 range from 0.187 to 0.770 GeV2 at Jefferson Lab using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). Longitudinal target and beam-target asymmetries were extracted over a large range of center-of-mass angles of the pi0 and compared to the unitary isobar model MAID, the dynamic model by Sato and Lee, and the dynamic model DMT. A strong sensitivity to individual models was observed, in particular for the target asymmetry and in the higher invariant mass region. This data set, once included in the global fits of the above models, is expected to place strong constraints on the electrocoupling amplitudes A_{1/2} and S_{1/2} for the Roper resonance N(1400)P11, and the N(1535)S11 and N(1520)D13 states.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figure

    Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is an archetypical genetic syndrome that is characterized by intellectual disability, well-defined facial features, upper limb anomalies and atypical growth, among numerous other signs and symptoms. It is caused by variants in any one of seven genes, all of which have a structural or regulatory function in the cohesin complex. Although recent advances in next-generation sequencing have improved molecular diagnostics, marked heterogeneity exists in clinical and molecular diagnostic approaches and care practices worldwide. Here, we outline a series of recommendations that document the consensus of a group of international experts on clinical diagnostic criteria, both for classic CdLS and non-classic CdLS phenotypes, molecular investigations, long-term management and care planning

    Differentiation in morphology and electrical signalling in four species of para- and sympatric Marcusenius (Teleostei: Mormyridae) from Cîte d’Ivoire, West Africa

    Marcusenius Gill, 1862 species were sampled from the Bandama River and the ComoĂ© River in CĂŽte d’Ivoire, West Africa. Marcusenius gracilis sp. nov. was differentiated from M. senegalensis (Steindachner, 1870), Marcusenius ussheri (GĂŒnther, 1867) and M. furcidens (Pellegrin, 1920) in electric organ discharges (EOD), and morphologically from all other West African congeners. Principal component analysis showed significant morphological differentiation among the four Ivorian species. Principal component 1 was loaded most strongly by characters affecting swimming power and manoeuvrability. The morphologically most similar pair, M. furcidens and M. gracilis sp. nov., are distinguished by their EOD waveforms and a sexual dimorphism in the anal fin base in the latter not present in the former. M. ussheri is distinguished by a sexual dimorphism in its EOD waveform not observed in the other three species. This system is an opportunity to study how far the fine-tuning of character displacement among syntopic species can go
