A CASS Occasional Paper on comparative analysis of Eco-Tourism in Zimbabwe, Kenya & South Africa.Tourism is a US3.4trillionayearglobalindustryand,accordingtotheWorldTourismOrganisation,theindustryisexpandingat4percenteveryyear,thefastestgrowingindustryintheworld.In1994,AfricaasawholeaccountedforonlyUS3.4 trillion a year global industry and, according to the World Tourism Organisation, the industry is expanding at 4 percent every year, the fastest growing industry in the world. In 1994, Africa as a whole accounted for only US6.3 billion worth of tourist receipts, most of which was spent in North Africa. Southern Africa is currently attempting to gain a greater share of these tourist receipts and is trying to foster inter-regional tourism through such newly formed organisations as the Regional Tourism Organisation of Southern Africa (RETOSA). A key aim of this organisation is to encourage inter-regional marketing packages to increase the volume of tourist receipts in the region. Such marketing networks are the first step towards creating packaged mass tourism

Induced mass in N=2 super Yang-Mills theories

The masses of the matter fields of N=2 Super-Yang-Mills theories can be defined as parameters of deformed supersymmetry transformations. The formulation used involves central charges for the matter fields. The explicit form of the deformed supersymmetry transformations and of the invariant Lagrangian in presence of the gauge supermultiplet are constructed. This works generalizes a former one, due to the same authors, which presented the free matter case.Comment: 15 pages, Late

Peer Reviewe

N=2 central charge superspace and a minimal supergravity multiplet

    Get PDF
We extend the notion of central charge superspace to the case of local supersymmetry. Gauged central charge transformations are identified as diffeomorphisms at the same footing as space-time diffeomorphisms and local supersymmetry transformations. Given the general structure we then proceed to the description of a particular vector-tensor supergravity multiplet of 24+24 components, identified by means of rather radical constraints

WNT10B: A locus increasing risk of brachygnathia inferior in Brown Swiss cattle.

Shortening of the mandible (brachygnathia inferior) is a congenital, often inherited and variably expressed craniofacial anomaly in domestic animals including cattle. Brachygnathia inferior can lead to poorer animal health and welfare and reduced growth, which ultimately affects productivity. Within the course of the systematic conformation scoring, cases with a frequency of about 0.1% were observed in the Brown Swiss cattle population of Switzerland. In contrast, this anomaly is almost unknown in the Original Braunvieh population, representing the breed of origin. Because none of the individually examined 46 living offspring of our study cohort of 145 affected cows showed the trait, we can most likely exclude a monogenic-dominant mode of inheritance. We hypothesized that either a monogenic recessive or a complex mode of inheritance was underlying. Through a genome-wide association study of 145 cases and 509 controls with imputed 624k SNP data, we identified a 4.5 Mb genomic region on bovine chromosome 5 significantly associated with this anomaly. This locus was fine-mapped using whole-genome sequencing data. A run of homozygosity analysis revealed a critical interval of 430 kb. A breed specific frameshift duplication in WNT10B (rs525007739; c.910dupC; p.Arg304ProfsTer14) located in this genomic region was found to be associated with a 21.5-fold increased risk of brachygnathia inferior in homozygous carriers. Consequently, we present for the first time a genetic locus associated with this well-known anomaly in cattle, which allows DNA-based selection of Brown Swiss animals at decreased risk for mandibular shortening. In addition, this study represents the first large animal model of a WNT10B-related inherited developmental disorder in a mammalian species

In vitro production of bovine embryos derived from individual donors in the Corral® dish

Background: Since the identity of the embryo is of outmost importance during commercial in vitro embryo production, bovine oocytes and embryos have to be cultured strictly per donor. Due to the rather low yield of oocytes collected after ovum pick-up (OPU) per individual cow, oocyte maturation and embryo culture take place in small groups, which is often associated with inferior embryo development. The objective of this study was to improve embryonic development in small donor groups by using the Corral (R) dish. This commercial dish is designed for human embryo production. It contains two central wells that are divided into quadrants by a semi-permeable wall. In human embryo culture, one embryo is placed per quadrant, allowing individual follow-up while embryos are exposed to a common medium. In our study, small groups of oocytes and subsequently embryos of different bovine donors were placed in the Corral (R) dish, each donor group in a separate quadrant. Results: In two experiments, the Corral (R) dish was evaluated during in vitro maturation (IVM) and/or in vitro culture (IVC) by grouping oocytes and embryos of individual bovine donors per quadrant. At day 7, a significantly higher blastocyst rate was noted in the Corral (R) dish used during IVM and IVC than when only used during IVM (12.9% +/- 2.10 versus 22.8% +/- 2.67) (P < 0.05). However, no significant differences in blastocyst yield were observed anymore between treatment groups at day 8 post insemination. Conclusions: In the present study, the Corral (R) dish was used for in vitro embryo production (IVP) in cattle; allowing to allocate oocytes and/or embryos per donor. As fresh embryo transfers on day 7 have higher pregnancy outcomes, the Corral (R) dish offers an added value for commercial OPU/IVP, since a higher blastocyst development at day 7 is obtained when the Corral (R) dish is used during IVM and IVC

On the AC spectrum of one-dimensional random Schroedinger operators with matrix-valued potentials

We consider discrete one-dimensional random Schroedinger operators with decaying matrix-valued, independent potentials. We show that if the l^2-norm of this potential has finite expectation value with respect to the product measure then almost surely the Schroedinger operator has an interval of purely absolutely continuous (ac) spectrum. We apply this result to Schroedinger operators on a strip. This work provides a new proof and generalizes a result obtained by Delyon, Simon, and Souillard.Comment: (1 figure

Predicting users' first impressions of website aesthetics with a quantification of perceived visual complexity and colorfulness

    Get PDF
Users make lasting judgments about a website's appeal within a split second of seeing it for the first time. This first impression is influential enough to later affect their opinions of a site's usability and trustworthiness. In this paper, we demonstrate a means to predict the initial impression of aesthetics based on perceptual models of a website's colorfulness and visual complexity. In an online study, we collected ratings of colorfulness, visual complexity, and visual appeal of a set of 450 websites from 548 volunteers. Based on these data, we developed computational models that accurately measure the perceived visual complexity and colorfulness of website screenshots. In combination with demographic variables such as a user's education level and age, these models explain approximately half of the variance in the ratings of aesthetic appeal given after viewing a website for 500ms only.Engineering and Applied Science
