Gravitational waves from rapidly rotating neutron stars
Rapidly rotating neutron stars in Low Mass X-ray Binaries have been proposed
as an interesting source of gravitational waves. In this chapter we present
estimates of the gravitational wave emission for various scenarios, given the
(electromagnetically) observed characteristics of these systems. First of all
we focus on the r-mode instability and show that a 'minimal' neutron star model
(which does not incorporate exotica in the core, dynamically important magnetic
fields or superfluid degrees of freedom), is not consistent with observations.
We then present estimates of both thermally induced and magnetically sustained
mountains in the crust. In general magnetic mountains are likely to be
detectable only if the buried magnetic field of the star is of the order of
G. In the thermal mountain case we find that gravitational
wave emission from persistent systems may be detected by ground based
interferometers. Finally we re-asses the idea that gravitational wave emission
may be balancing the accretion torque in these systems, and show that in most
cases the disc/magnetosphere interaction can account for the observed spin

Hemodynamic and ADH responses to central blood volume shifts in cardiac-denervated humans
Hemodynamic responses and antidiuretic hormone (ADH) were measured during body position changes designed to induce blood volume shifts in ten cardiac transplant recipients to assess the contribution of cardiac and vascular volume receptors in the control of ADH secretion. Each subject underwent 15 min of a control period in the seated posture, then assumed a lying posture for 30 min at 6 deg head down tilt (HDT) followed by 20 min of seated recovery. Venous blood samples and cardiac dimensions (echocardiography) were taken at 0 and 15 min before HDT, 5, 15, and 30 min of HDT, and 5, 15, and 30 min of seated recovery. Blood samples were analyzed for hematocrit, plasma osmolality, plasma renin activity (PRA), and ADH. Resting plasma volume (PV) was measured by Evans blue dye and percent changes in PV during posture changes were calculated from changes in hematocrit. Heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) were recorded every 2 min. Generalized Rate-Code Model for Neuron Ensembles with Finite Populations
We have proposed a generalized Langevin-type rate-code model subjected to
multiplicative noise, in order to study stationary and dynamical properties of
an ensemble containing {\it finite} neurons. Calculations using the
Fokker-Planck equation (FPE) have shown that owing to the multiplicative noise,
our rate model yields various kinds of stationary non-Gaussian distributions
such as gamma, inverse-Gaussian-like and log-normal-like distributions, which
have been experimentally observed. Dynamical properties of the rate model have
been studied with the use of the augmented moment method (AMM), which was
previously proposed by the author with a macroscopic point of view for
finite-unit stochastic systems. In the AMM, original -dimensional stochastic
differential equations (DEs) are transformed into three-dimensional
deterministic DEs for means and fluctuations of local and global variables.
Dynamical responses of the neuron ensemble to pulse and sinusoidal inputs
calculated by the AMM are in good agreement with those obtained by direct
simulation. The synchronization in the neuronal ensemble is discussed.
Variabilities of the firing rate and of the interspike interval (ISI) are shown
to increase with increasing the magnitude of multiplicative noise, which may be

Helping education undergraduates to use appropriate criteria for evaluating accounts of motivation
The aim of the study was to compare students in a control group with those in a treatment group with respect to evaluative comments on psychological accounts of motivation. The treatment group systematically scrutinized the nature and interpretation of evidence that supported different accounts, and the assumptions, logic, coherence and clarity of accounts. Content analysis of 74 scripts (using three categories) showed that the control group students made more assertions than either evidential or evaluative points, whereas the treatment group used evaluative statements as often as they used assertion. The findings provide support for privileging activities that develop understanding of how knowledge might be contested, and suggest a need for further research on pedagogies to serve this end. The idea is considered that such understanding has a pivotal role in the development of critical thinking
Does Weight Loss Cause the Exercise-induced Increase in Plasma High Density Lipoproteins?
Studies showing an increase in plasma concentration of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) with moderate exercise have usually rejected the role of body weight change in the HDL-C raising process, ostensibly because the amount of weight lost has been negligible. To investigate HDL-C changes more thoroughly, we followed initially sedentary middle-aged men randomly assigned to either a moderate running (N=36) or a sedentary control (N=28) group for one year. Among runners, one-year changes in plasma HDL-C concentrations correlated strongly with their body weight changes (r = -0.53, P \u3c 0.001). Curve-fitting procedures and regression analysis suggested that processes associated with weight change produce much of the plasma HDL-C changes induced by moderate exercise and that changes in HDL-C concentration predominantly reflect changes in the reputedly anti-atherogenic HDL2 sub-component. Associations between daily sitting time and the combinations of lifestyle risk factors in men
Background: Understanding the reciprocal role that multiple problematic behaviours play in men's health is important for intervention delivery and for reducing the healthcare burden. Data regarding the concurrence of problematic health behaviours is currently limited but offers insights into risk profiles, and should now include total time spent sitting/day. Methods: Self-reported data on lifestyle health behaviours was collected from 232 men aged ≥18 years who engaged in a men's health promotion programme delivered by 16 English Premier League Clubs. Results: Men at risk due to high sitting display multiple concurrent lifestyle risk factors, 88.6% displayed at least two ancillary risk factors and were three times more likely to report ≥2 lifestyle risk factors (OR. =3.13, 95% confidence interval (CI). =1.52-6.42) than those with low sitting risk. Significant differences in the mean number of risk factors reported between those participants in the higher risk (2.43. ±. 0.90) and lower risk (2.13. ±. 0.96) sitting categories were also found (P=0.015). Conclusions: Hard-to-reach men displayed multiple problematic concurrent behaviours, strongly linked to total sitting time. © 2012 WPMH GmbH

The Breathe Easier through Weight Loss Lifestyle (BE WELL) Intervention: A randomized controlled trial
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Obesity and asthma have reached epidemic proportions in the US. Their concurrent rise over the last 30 years suggests that they may be connected. Numerous observational studies support a temporally-correct, dose-response relationship between body mass index (BMI) and incident asthma. Weight loss, either induced by surgery or caloric restriction, has been reported to improve asthma symptoms and lung function. Due to methodological shortcomings of previous studies, however, well-controlled trials are needed to investigate the efficacy of weight loss strategies to improve asthma control in obese individuals.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>BE WELL is a 2-arm parallel randomized clinical trial (RCT) of the efficacy of an evidence-based, comprehensive, behavioral weight loss intervention, focusing on diet, physical activity, and behavioral therapy, as adjunct therapy to usual care in the management of asthma in obese adults. Trial participants (n = 324) are patients aged 18 to 70 years who have suboptimally controlled, persistent asthma, BMI between 30.0 and 44.9 kg/m<sup>2</sup>, and who do not have serious comorbidities (e.g., diabetes, heart disease, stroke). The 12-month weight loss intervention to be studied is based on the principles of the highly successful Diabetes Prevention Program lifestyle intervention. Intervention participants will attend 13 weekly group sessions over a four-month period, followed by two monthly individual sessions, and will then receive individualized counseling primarily by phone, at least bi-monthly, for the remainder of the intervention. Follow-up assessment will occur at six and 12 months. The primary outcome variable is the overall score on the Juniper Asthma Control Questionnaire measured at 12 months. Secondary outcomes include lung function, asthma-specific and general quality of life, asthma medication use, asthma-related and total health care utilization. Potential mediators (e.g., weight loss and change in physical activity level and nutrient intake) and moderators (e.g., socio-demographic characteristics and comorbidities) of the intervention effects also will be examined.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>This RCT holds considerable potential for illuminating the nature of the obesity-asthma relationship and advancing current guidelines for treating obese adults with asthma, which may lead to reduced morbidity and mortality related to the comorbidity of the two disorders.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>NCT00901095</p

Acceptability of novel lifelogging technology to determine context of sedentary behaviour in older adults
<strong>Objective:</strong> Lifelogging, using body worn sensors (activity monitors and time lapse photography) has the potential to shed light on the context of sedentary behaviour. The objectives of this study were to examine the acceptability, to older adults, of using lifelogging technology and indicate its usefulness for understanding behaviour.<strong> </strong><strong>Method:</strong> 6 older adults (4 males, mean age: 68yrs) wore the equipment (ActivPAL<sup>TM</sup> and Vicon Revue<sup>TM</sup>/SenseCam<sup>TM</sup>) for 7 consecutive days during free-living activity. The older adults’ perception of the lifelogging technology was assessed through semi-structured interviews, including a brief questionnaire (Likert scale), and reference to the researcher's diary. <strong>Results:</strong> Older adults in this study found the equipment acceptable to wear and it did not interfere with privacy, safety or create reactivity, but they reported problems with the actual technical functioning of the camera. <strong>Conclusion:</strong> This combination of sensors has good potential to provide lifelogging information on the context of sedentary behaviour
