    Measuring the Capital Energy Value in Historic Structures

    A credible model to account for the overall energy benefits with retention of historic buildings has been needed since preservation became national policy in 1966. The initial need to measure energy capital in buildings arose from the two energy crises in the 1970s, with a second need to address the sustainability goals of the 1990s/2000s. Both responses measure overall energy efficiency of historic buildings by attempting to account for the energy capital. The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation introduced the first model in 1979, focused on measuring embodied energy and it has remained embedded in preservation vocabulary and is a reflexive argument utilized to advocate for the retention of historic structures over new construction. The second model, the life cycle assessment/avoided impacts is a response to the evolving metrics and currency of sustainability. The Preservation Green Lab further matured the capabilities of the life cycle assessment/avoided impacts model in 2012 with their innovative report, The Greenest Building: Quantifying the Environmental Value of Building Reuse. This thesis evaluates the future of the preservation field to communicate with a common currency regarding retention of historic structures

    Ground Movement Characteristics above Mined Panels in Appalachia-an Empirical Approach

    The growing recognition of mining subsidence and its effects has provoked numerous investigations into the modeling and prediction of this phenomenon. Through an analysis of case histories and examination of the various modeling techniques, it has become apparent that empirical studies currently represent the most realistic approach to this problem. However, the collection, analysis and interpretation of subsidence and strain data acquired from case studies presents substantial difficulties, due to varying monitoring techniques and methods of analysis. In this paper it is suggested that a prescribed monitoring program could eliminate these problems and ensure quality data by standardizing the measurement process. Such an effort may also increase the number of case studies available for analysis, allowing more intense investigations of subsidence prediction methods. Finally, some basic subsidence relationships developed from the established subsidence data bank on longwall and room and pillar mines in Appalachia are discussed in detail. These relationships may provide important information on the characteristics of ground movements above mined areas and thus greatly facilitate engineering design under these conditions

    Histological and Biochemical Findings in Membranous Cataract

    Background: In this report we present a patient with unilateral membranous cataract and describe the histological and biochemical findings accompanying this rare condition. Methods: The patient underwent an uneventful cataract extraction. Aqueous humor (20 _ l) was aspirated from the anterior chamber intraoperatively and processed for fibroblast growth factor (FGF) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) using an immunoassay method (ELISA). The lens material was subjected to histological examination. Results: The patient had increased levels of FGF and EGF in the aqueous humor, as measured by ELISA. Histological examination of the lens material showed a marked fibrous metaplasia and thickening of the anterior lens capsule, while the lens epithelial cells were transformed to active myofibroblasts which generated a fibrous matrix of collagen lamellae. Unfortunately, visual function was not restored postoperatively due to underlying amblyopia. Conclusions: Our histolog- ical and biochemical findings suggest that FGF and EGF may play a key role in the formation of membranous cataract, and therefore their impact on lens physiology should be further investigated
