Kohti kansainvälistymistä : CLIL, vieraskielinen opetussisältö, koulun käytännöissä

Perinteisen kielenopetuksen rinnalla tarvitaan uusia ratkaisuja, koska se ei välttämättä tarjoa oppilaille tarpeeksi aikaa kielen käyttämiseen tunneilla. Perinteinen kielenopetus ei useinkaan tuo opittavaa asiaa autenttiseen kontekstiin. Autenttisuus auttaisi oppilaita muistamaan uudet sanat helpommin ja yhdistämään kielen oikeaan kontekstiin puhuttaessa. CLIL vastaa näihin haasteisiin ja oppilaiden rohkeus kommunikoida vieraalla kielellä kasvaa. Tutkimuksemme tarkoitus on selvittää, miten CLIL -metodia toteutetaan käytännössä. Teoreettisessa viitekehyksessä käsittelemme CLILn periaatteita, joita ovat sosiokonstruktivismi ja 4C:tä (Content, Communication, Cognition ja Culture). Tutkimuksemme on luonteeltaan etnografinen tutkimus. Etnografiselle tutkimukselle on ominaista aineiston monipuolisuus ja kenttätyö. Havainnoimme yhteensä neljäkymmentäneljä CLIL -opetustuokiota kolmessa eri koulussa. Nimesimme koulut Tapaus Espanjaksi, Tapaus Rovaniemeksi ja Tapaus Australiaksi. Etnografiassa aineiston analyysi alkaa jo kentällä ja jatkuu läpi litteroinnin ja kirjoittamisen. Tällainen prosessinomainen aineiston analysointi näkyy myös meidän tutkimuksessamme. Tarkastelemme tutkimustuloksia neljän otsikon valossa: kieli, opetusmenetelmät, scaffolding ja motivaatio. Näiden termien kautta tarkastelemme CLILn periaatteiden toteutumista kaikissa tapauksissa sekä vertailemme koulukohtaisia toteutuksia keskenään. Pohdinta-osioon laadimme koosteen siitä, miten CLILn periaatteet toteutuivat tutkituissa kouluissa. Kaikissa kouluissa periaatteet toteutuivat ainakin osittain. Tapaus Espanjassa kaikki periaatteet toteutuivat täysin. Pidämmekin tätä malliesimerkkinä CLILstä. Kysymme myös, voiko CLILiä olla sellaiset toteutustavat, joissa sen periaatteet toteutuvat vain osittain tai eivät toteudu lainkaan? Tutkimuksemme esittelee kolme erilaista toteutustapaa CLILlle. Se tuo käsitettä itsessään tunnetummaksi ja tekee metodista kansantajuisemman. Nämä mallit ja selkeät periaatteet tarjoavat vieraan kielen vaihtoehtoisesta opettamisesta kiinnostuneille suuntaviivat CLILn toteuttamiselle omassa opetustyössään

Eight lessons on fostering learning in large research and development programmes

Learning-driven, adaptive approaches to designing research and implementing programmes are increasingly popular in fields such as international development. Among funding agencies there is also a growing trend towards “multi-project programmes”, the grouping together of many projects under a single umbrella programme, the aim being to enhance how projects, organisations and individuals exchange knowledge and learn from one another. Tiina Pasanen and Blane Harvey here outline eight emerging lessons on fostering learning in large research and development programmes; from a warning never to make assumptions about a collaborative mindset, through the importance of investing in facilitated face-to-face engagement, to the need to regularly review and adapt learning mechanisms

Escaping a migrant metropolis: Post-Soviet urbanization through the art project Nasreddin in Russia

This article narrates the politics of escape from borders and labour discipline in a post-Soviet migrant metropolis drawing on the art-activism project Nasreddin in Russia. It explores the relation between control and autonomy in urban migrations through a trans-aesthetics: a set of visual and verbal stories weaving together experiences and outcomes of the art project with academic debates on late capitalist urbanization. The encounter of artistic practices and migrants’ embodied, everyday struggles to inhabit the city, it is suggested, has potential for disrupting the disciplinary and exclusionary effects of capitalist transformations and migration enforcement. This is made visible through transient spaces of escape in which the everyday lives and social worlds of migrants, constrained by the precarization of labour and by the multiplication and diversification of bordering practices, are reclaimed through laughter, mobility and care. This point is illustrated by focusing on three such spaces and practices: trickster politics in the housing market, acts of disidentification and care work on the city ‘as a body.’ The article offers a methodologically innovative contribution to ongoing debates on aesthetic political economy, cities and borders and artistic and activist interventions in global cities.Peer reviewe

Combined fit to the spectrum and composition data measured by the Pierre Auger Observatory including magnetic horizon effects

The measurements by the Pierre Auger Observatory of the energy spectrum and mass composition of cosmic rays can be interpreted assuming the presence of two extragalactic source populations, one dominating the flux at energies above a few EeV and the other below. To fit the data ignoring magnetic field effects, the high-energy population needs to accelerate a mixture of nuclei with very hard spectra, at odds with the approximate E$^{-2}$ shape expected from diffusive shock acceleration. The presence of turbulent extragalactic magnetic fields in the region between the closest sources and the Earth can significantly modify the observed CR spectrum with respect to that emitted by the sources, reducing the flux of low-rigidity particles that reach the Earth. We here take into account this magnetic horizon effect in the combined fit of the spectrum and shower depth distributions, exploring the possibility that a spectrum for the high-energy population sources with a shape closer to E$^{-2}$ be able to explain the observations
