Magnetic resonance imaging differences between dementia with Lewy bodies and Alzheimer's disease; a pilot study
Evidence for a persistent, major excess in all cause admissions to hospital in children with type-1 diabetes: results from a large Welsh national matched community cohort study
OBJECTIVES: To estimate the excess in admissions associated with type1 diabetes in childhood. DESIGN: Matched-cohort study using anonymously linked hospital admission data. SETTING: Brecon Group Register of new cases of childhood diabetes in Wales linked to hospital admissions data within the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage Databank. POPULATION: 1577 Welsh children (aged between 0 and 15â
years) from the Brecon Group Register with newly-diagnosed type-1 diabetes between 1999â2009 and 7800 population controls matched on age, sex, county, and deprivation, randomly selected from the local population. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Difference in all-cause hospital admission rates, 30-days post-diagnosis until 31 May 2012, between participants and controls. RESULTS: Children with type-1 diabetes were followed up for a total of 12â
102 person years and were at 480% (incidence rate ratios, IRR 5.789, (95% CI 5.34 to 6.723), p<0.0001) increased risk of hospital admission in comparison to matched controls. The highest absolute excess of admission was in the age group of 0â5â
years, with a 15.4% (IRR 0.846, (95% CI 0.744 to 0.965), p=0.0061) reduction in hospital admissions for every 5-year increase in age at diagnosis. A trend of increasing admission rates in lower socioeconomic status groups was also observed, but there was no evidence of a differential rate of admissions between men and women when adjusted for background risk. Those receiving outpatient care at large centres had a 16.1% (IRR 0.839, (95% CI 0.709 to 0.990), p=0.0189) reduction in hospital admissions compared with those treated at small centres. CONCLUSIONS: There is a large excess of hospital admissions in paediatric patients with type-1 diabetes. Rates are highest in the youngest children with low socioeconomic status. Factors influencing higher admission rates in smaller centres (eg, âout of hours resourcesâ) need to be explored with the aim of targeting modifiable influences on admission rates
Cluster Monte Carlo study of multi-component fluids of the Stillinger-Helfand and Widom-Rowlinson type
Phase transitions of fluid mixtures of the type introduced by Stillinger and
Helfand are studied using a continuum version of the invaded cluster algorithm.
Particles of the same species do not interact, but particles of different types
interact with each other via a repulsive potential. Examples of interactions
include the Gaussian molecule potential and a repulsive step potential.
Accurate values of the critical density, fugacity and magnetic exponent are
found in two and three dimensions for the two-species model. The effect of
varying the number of species and of introducing quenched impurities is also
investigated. In all the cases studied, mixtures of -species are found to

Effect of BMI-discordant abdominal tissue thickness on fracture probability: a registry-based study
FRAX, which is used to assess fracture probability, considers body mass index (BMI), but BMI may not reflect individual variation in body composition and distribution. We examined the effect of BMI-discordant abdominal thickness on FRAX-derived fracture probability for major osteoporotic fracture (MOF) and hip fracture. We studied 73,105 individuals, mean age 64.2âyears. During mean 8.7âyears, 7048 (9.6%) individuals sustained incident MOF, including 2155 (3.0%) hip fractures. We defined abdominal thickness index (ATI) as the difference between abdominal thickness measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and thickness predicted by BMI using sex-stratified regression. ATI was categorized from lower (+2âcm) with referent around zero (â1 to +1âcm). Adjusted for FRAX probability, increasing ATI was associated with incident MOF and hip fracture (pâ<â0.001). For the highest ATI category, MOF risk was increased (hazard ratio [HR] =â1.23, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.12â1.35) independent of FRAX probability. Similar findings were noted for hip fracture probability (HRâ=â1.28, 95% CI 1.09â1.51). There was significant age-interaction with much larger effects before age 65âyears (HRâ=â1.44, 95% CI 1.23â1.69 for MOF; 2.29, 95% CI 1.65â3.18 for hip fracture). In contrast, for the subset of individuals with diabetes, there was also increased risk for those in the lowest ATI category (HRâ=â1.73, 95% CI 1.12â2.65 for MOF; 2.81, 95% CI 1.59â4.97 for hip fracture). Calibration plots across ATI categories demonstrated deviation from the line of identity in women (calibration slope 2.26 for MOF, 2.83 for hip fracture). An effect of ATI was not found in men, but this was inconclusive as the sex-interaction terms did not show significant effect modification. In conclusion, these data support the need to investigate increased abdominal thickness beyond that predicted by BMI and sex as a FRAX-independent risk factor for fracture. © 2023 The Authors. Challenges confronting road freight transport and the use of vehicle-pavement interaction analysis in addressing these challenges
Traditional arguments for maintaining riding quality of pavement are expanded in this paper
to examine the effects of deteriorating riding quality on vehicle operating costs, freight
damage and logistics. The objectives of this paper are to analyse the effects of different
levels of riding quality on a truck and its freight, and to discuss potential applications of the
analysis in terms of effectiveness of the freight transport system. The paper discusses needs
and drivers influencing freight transport costs, vehicle-pavement interaction concepts, and
the potential physical effects and costs from roads with deteriorating riding quality. A case
study is presented analysing vehicle-pavement interaction for selected roadways in California.
It is concluded that investments in pavement and freight transport industry improvements
can be investigated by applying vehicle-pavement interaction analysis to evaluate damage
to pavement, vehicle and freight that would result from alternative levels of pavement
riding quality. The paper recommends that existing concepts, tools and resources such as
dedicated truck lanes and vehicle-pavement interaction analysis can help to improve the
freight transport system. A framework is proposed to better understand the scale of potential
impacts of riding quality from localised effects to larger-scale influences, including costs to

The Biology Instrument for the Viking Mars Mission
Two Viking spacecraft have successfully soft landed on the surface of Mars. Each carries, along with other scientific instruments, one biology laboratory with three different experiments designed to search for evidence of living microorganisms in material sampled from the Martian surface. This 15.5-kg biology instrument which occupies a volume of almost 28.3 dm3 is the first to carry out an in situ search for extraterrestrial life on a planet. The three experiments are called the pyrolytic release, labeled release, and gas exchange. The pyrolytic release experiment has the capability to measure the fixation of carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide into organic matter. The labeled release experiment detects metabolic processes by monitoring the production of volatile carbon compounds from a radioactively labeled nutrient mixture. The gas exchange experiment monitors the gas changes in the head space above a soil sample which is either incubated in a humid environment or supplied with a rich organic nutrient solution. Each experiment can analyze a soil sample as it is received from the surface or, as a control, analyze a soil which has been heated to above 160C. Each instrument has the capability to receive four different soils dug from the Martian surface and perform a number of analysis cycles depending on the particular experiment. Triggering an eruptive flare by emerging flux in a solar active-region complex
A flare and fast coronal mass ejection originated between solar active
regions NOAA 11514 and 11515 on July 1, 2012 in response to flux emergence in
front of the leading sunspot of the trailing region 11515. Analyzing the
evolution of the photospheric magnetic flux and the coronal structure, we find
that the flux emergence triggered the eruption by interaction with overlying
flux in a non-standard way. The new flux neither had the opposite orientation
nor a location near the polarity inversion line, which are favorable for strong
reconnection with the arcade flux under which it emerged. Moreover, its flux
content remained significantly smaller than that of the arcade (approximately
40 %). However, a loop system rooted in the trailing active region ran in part
under the arcade between the active regions, passing over the site of flux
emergence. The reconnection with the emerging flux, leading to a series of jet
emissions into the loop system, caused a strong but confined rise of the loop
system. This lifted the arcade between the two active regions, weakening its
downward tension force and thus destabilizing the considerably sheared flux
under the arcade. The complex event was also associated with supporting
precursor activity in an enhanced network near the active regions, acting on
the large-scale overlying flux, and with two simultaneous confined flares

Dynamics of Coronal Bright Points as seen by Sun Watcher using Active Pixel System detector and Image Processing (SWAP), Atmospheric Imaging Assembly AIA), and Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI)
The \textit{Sun Watcher using Active Pixel system detector and Image
Processing}(SWAP) on board the \textit{PRoject for OnBoard Autonomy\todash 2}
(PROBA\todash 2) spacecraft provides images of the solar corona in EUV channel
centered at 174 \AA. These data, together with \textit{Atmospheric Imaging
Assembly} (AIA) and the \textit{Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager} (HMI) on
board \textit{Solar Dynamics Observatory} (SDO), are used to study the dynamics
of coronal bright points. The evolution of the magnetic polarities and
associated changes in morphology are studied using magnetograms and
multi-wavelength imaging. The morphology of the bright points seen in
low-resolution SWAP images and high-resolution AIA images show different
structures, whereas the intensity variations with time show similar trends in
both SWAP 174 and AIA 171 channels. We observe that bright points are seen in
EUV channels corresponding to a magnetic-flux of the order of Mx. We
find that there exists a good correlation between total emission from the
bright point in several UV\todash EUV channels and total unsigned photospheric
magnetic flux above certain thresholds. The bright points also show periodic
brightenings and we have attempted to find the oscillation periods in bright
points and their connection to magnetic flux changes. The observed periods are
generally long (10\todash 25 minutes) and there is an indication that the
intensity oscillations may be generated by repeated magnetic reconnection
Four Light Neutrinos in Singular Seesaw Mechanism with Abelian Flavor Symmetry
The four light neutrino scenario, which explains the atmosphere, solar and
LSND neutrino experiments, is studied in the framework of the seesaw mechanism.
By taking both the Dirac and Majorana mass matrix of neutrinos to be singular,
the four neutrino mass spectrum consisting of two almost degenerate pairs
separated by a mass gap eV is naturally generated. Moreover the
right-handed neutrino Majorana mass can be at GeV scale unlike
in the usual singular seesaw mechanism. Abelian flavor symmetry is used to
produce the required neutrino mass pattern. A specific example of the flavor
charge assignment is provided to show that maximal mixings between the
and are respectively attributed to the
atmosphere and solar neutrino anomalies while small mixing between two pairs to
the LSND results. The implication in the other fermion masses is also

Physics of Solar Prominences: II - Magnetic Structure and Dynamics
Observations and models of solar prominences are reviewed. We focus on
non-eruptive prominences, and describe recent progress in four areas of
prominence research: (1) magnetic structure deduced from observations and
models, (2) the dynamics of prominence plasmas (formation and flows), (3)
Magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) waves in prominences and (4) the formation and
large-scale patterns of the filament channels in which prominences are located.
Finally, several outstanding issues in prominence research are discussed, along
