Objectives Cultivation of compassion is a useful way to treat mental problems, but some individuals show resistance. Fears of compassion can be an obstacle for clinicians when providing psychotherapy, and for clients when engaging in interpersonal relationships. Despite its importance, a Japanese version of fears of compassion scales (for others, from others, and for self) has not yet been developed. This study developed a Japanese version of the Fears of Compassion Scales and tested its reliability and validity. Design This study used a cross-sectional design, and a self-report procedure for collecting data. Methods A total of 485 students (121 males and 364 females) answered self-report questionnaires, including the draft Fears of Compassion Scales—Japanese version. Results There were distinctive factor structures for fear of compassion from others, and for self. The fear of compassion from others scale consisted of concern about compassion from others and avoidance of compassion from others. All scales had good internal consistency, test-retest reliability, face validity, and construct validity. Discrimination and difficulty were also calculated. Conclusions These results indicate that the Fears of Compassion Scales—Japanese version is a well-constructed and useful measure to assess fears of compassion and the existence of cultural differences in fears of compassion. This study was supported by JSPS KAKENHI Grant Number15K17289 (https://kaken.nii.ac.jp/en/grant/KAKENHI-PROJECT-15K17289/)

Cost containment and quality of care in Japan: Is there a trade-off?

Japan\u27s health indices such as life expectancy at birth are among the best in the world. However, at 8•5% the proportion of gross domestic product spent on health is 20th among Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries in 2008 and half as much as that in the USA. Costs have been contained by the nationally uniform fee schedule, in which the global revision rate is set fi rst and item-by-item revisions are then made. Although the structural and process dimensions of quality seem to be poor, the characteristics of the health-care system are primarily attributable to how physicians and hospitals have developed in the country, and not to the cost-containment policy. However, outcomes such as postsurgical mortality rates are as good as those reported for other developed countries. Japan\u27s basic policy has been a combination of tight control of the conditions of payment, but a laissezfaire approach to how services are delivered; this combination has led to a scarcity of professional governance and accountability. In view of the structural problems facing the health-care system, the balance should be shifted towards increased freedom of payment conditions by simplifi cation of reimbursement rules, but tightened control of service delivery by strengthening of regional health planning, both of which should be supported through public monitoring of providers\u27 performance. Japan\u27s experience of good health and low cost suggests that the priority in health policy should initially be improvement of access and prevention of impoverishment from health care, after which effi ciency and quality of services should then be pursued. Synthesis, Radical-Scavenging Activity, and Redox Behavior of Planar Catechin Derivatives

The development of novel antioxidants showing a stronger radical-scavenging activity than natural antioxidants has attracted considerable interest to remove reactive oxygen species, which are known to induce oxidative stress and associated diseases. We herein report the synthesis, radical-scavenging activity, and redox behavior of planar catechin derivatives, in which catechol and chroman moieties in natural (+)-catechin are constrained to be planar. The spectroscopic and kinetic studies have demonstrated that the rate of the scavenging reaction of galvinoxyl radical by the planar catechin is about 5-fold faster than that by (+)-catechin in deaerated acetonitrile.International Society for Free Radical Research 13th Biennial Congres
