Women's secure hospital services: national bed numbers and distribution.
A mapping exercise as part of a pathway study of women in secure psychiatric services in the England and Wales was conducted. It aimed to (i) establish the extent and range of secure service provision for women nationally and (ii) establish the present and future care needs and pathways of care of women mentally disordered offenders (MDO) currently in low, medium and enhanced medium secure care. The study identified 589 medium secure beds, 46 enhanced medium secure beds (WEMSS) and 990 low secure beds for women nationally. Of the 589 medium secure beds, the majority (309, 52%) are in the NHS and under half (280, 48%) are in the independent sector (IS). The distribution of low secure beds is in the opposite direction, the majority (745, 75%) being in the IS and 254 (25%) in the NHS. Medium secure provision for women has grown over the past decade, but comparative data for low secure provision are not available. Most women are now in single sex facilities although a small number of mixed sex units remain. The findings have implications for the future commissioning of secure services for women
Diffusion of digital innovation in construction: a case study of a UK engineering firm
The UK government is mandating the use of building information modelling (BIM) in large public projects by 2016. As a result, engineering firms are faced with challenges related to embedding new technologies and associated working practices for the digital delivery of major infrastructure projects. Diffusion of innovations theory is used to investigate how digital innovations diffuse across complex firms. A contextualist approach is employed through an in-depth case study of a large, international engineering project-based firm. The analysis of the empirical data, which was collected over a four-year period of close interaction with the firm, reveals parallel paths of diffusion occurring across the firm, where both the innovation and the firm context were continually changing. The diffusion process is traced over three phases: centralization of technology management, standardization of digital working practices, and globalization of digital resources. The findings describe the diffusion of a digital innovation as multiple and partial within a complex social system during times of change and organizational uncertainty, thereby contributing to diffusion of innovations studies in construction by showing a range of activities and dynamics of a non-linear diffusion process

Insider and outsider collaboration: questioning realities and revealing mirages - the case of the National Training Programme in Oman.
This paper has been co-constructed by an insider and an outsider and utilises material from a larger study conducted by the first named author, the insider. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the work of Human Resource Development (HRD) academics who have highlighted the importance of ‘talk’ with HRD; illuminating how a focus on discourse can ‘reveal’ aspects of HRD which often remain hidden (for example: Evans 2014; Lawless et al. 2011; Stewart et al. 2014). The paper also contributes to practitioner knowledge by illustrating how insiders and outsiders can work together, enabling the insider to question some taken-for-granted assumptions (Milano et al. 2015). We illustrate how an insider-outsider relationship enabled the insider to question the perceived ‘reality’ which emerged from initial template analysis. We discuss how further data generation and analysis, informed by a discourse approach, enabled the insider to question initial interpretations and in doing so reveal a more a complex ‘mirage’ emerging from the insider research. A ‘mirage’ which reflected the complexity within this particular research context while revealing possibilities for emancipatory change

The objective of this study was to compare fecal near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) and the nutrition balance analyzer (NUTBAL) results with diet samples and cattle performance to determine if fecal NIRS and NUTBAL can accurately predict forage quality and cattle performance in South Dakota
High-fidelity quantum logic gates using trapped-ion hyperfine qubits
We demonstrate laser-driven two-qubit and single-qubit logic gates with
fidelities 99.9(1)% and 99.9934(3)% respectively, significantly above the
approximately 99% minimum threshold level required for fault-tolerant quantum
computation, using qubits stored in hyperfine ground states of calcium-43 ions
held in a room-temperature trap. We study the speed/fidelity trade-off for the
two-qubit gate, for gate times between 3.8s and 520s, and develop a
theoretical error model which is consistent with the data and which allows us

03. Population Demographics of the Loggerhead Shrike: Insights into the Species Decline from a Long-Term Study in the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie
We monitored a breeding population of loggerhead shrikes (Lanius ludovicianus) in the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie from 2005 to 2016. Demographic data were compiled annually, including information on population size, age structure, and reproductive success. We banded adult shrikes, with some additional effort focused on nestlings (2005–2007) and independent hatch-year birds (2014–2016). We measured return rate as the number of birds that were previously banded. Site reuse rates were quantified as the use of a breeding territory in multiple years. Site fidelity, the use of a site by the same male or female in consecutive years, and dispersal distance of banded birds from their natal or previous breeding territory were assessed in 2015 and 2016, after inception of a color-banding program in 2014. Population size ranged from 4 to 14 breeding pairs, with additional single nonbreeding birds noted in most years. The percentage of the population that successfully fledged at least one young each year ranged from 50 to 100%. First nests were more often unsuccessful than later nests. Site reuse was high, and appears related to nesting success in the preceding year, suggesting that shrikes use postbreeding information when selecting nest sites. The ratio of second-year (SY, first year breeder) to after-second-year (ASY) birds varied by year and among sex, with largerthan- expected numbers of SY female birds. Average natal dispersal distance within Midewin was 0.97 km, and average adult dispersal distance was 1.6 km. Female dispersal distance was slightly greater than that of males (2.1 km vs. 1.3 km). By the end of each breeding season, the majority of the known adult population was banded, but approximately only one-third of the banded population returns at the start of the subsequent breeding season. Population size and trend appear correlated with number of ASY birds, and immigration rates of unbanded birds include first-year breeders and those that have bred at least once before, likely from outside of Midewin
High-fidelity trapped-ion quantum logic using near-field microwaves
We demonstrate a two-qubit logic gate driven by near-field microwaves in a
room-temperature microfabricated ion trap. We measure a gate fidelity of
99.7(1)\%, which is above the minimum threshold required for fault-tolerant
quantum computing. The gate is applied directly to Ca "atomic clock"
qubits (coherence time ) using the microwave
magnetic field gradient produced by a trap electrode. We introduce a
dynamically-decoupled gate method, which stabilizes the qubits against
fluctuating a.c.\ Zeeman shifts and avoids the need to null the microwave
field
Interweaving in hybrid methodologies
The paper will consider instances of the interweaving of theory and practice within drawing research, in order to suggest potential approaches to the development of hybrid methodologies in fine art practice-led research. The paper is written from the position of two current supervisors and creative research collaborators: Deborah Harty and Phil Sawdon (aka humhyphenhum from 2007), who historically were supervisee/supervisor. The paper will make reference to Harty's experience as a Ph.D. researcher undertaking practice-led research within a fine art context (completed 2010) and supervised by Sawdon. A discussion of Harty's hybrid methodology: action theoria, will provide an instance of the interweaving of theory and practice. Action theoria incorporates the cyclical and iterative process of action research – intention; action; review – with a process of theoria – the dialogue of both practice and theory's relationship to a given subject matter. Following this, the paper will discuss the interweaving of action theoria into humhyphenhum's collaborative research methodology: meaningful play. This interwoven methodology evolved during collaborative practice-led research projects from 2005 to the present. The paper will make reference to several of humhyphenhum's projects as a means to identify the interweaving of theory and practice within collaborative research. As current supervisors (2015), the paper will conclude with a discussion of how reflection on these experiences has informed our position as supervisors. We will consider, for example, how this has impacted on our ability, as individual supervisors, to offer insights into the interweaving of theory and practice, without defaulting to the position of compelling our supervisees to adopt our methodology
