    The wisdom and apocalyptic layers of the Sayings Gospel Q: What is their significance?New Testament scholarship over the past three decades has shown a growing interest in the Sayings Gospel Q. Vielhauer’s thesis on the secondary nature of the future Son of man sayings led to the conclusion that the apocalyptic element within the Sayings Gospel Q was also secondary. This paper follows the work of Kloppenborg and examines the wisdom and apocalyptic layers of the Sayings Gospel Q. The examination argues that the proclamation of Jesus was directed first of all to the proclamation of a kingdom that was present. The apocalyptic understanding ofa future, immediate end o f the world was a later appropriation within a deuteronomistic framework that developed from sayings o f Jesus that were interpreted in this way by the early church

    An inquiry into the character of ethical statements and their verification and justification

    Meta-ethics aims at considering questions and problems of fundamental importance to ethics as a science. A central aspect of meta-ethics deals with the character of ethical statements. Are they capable of verification? This is the question examined by this paper. Many differing answers have been proposed to the question but where many answers falter is in their neglect to give attention to the truly scientific nature of ethics. It is proposed that the approach of W. Pannenberg is to be followed whereby ethics must be viewed in a scientific way. Christian ethical thinking must take the results in other branches of science and make use of them, applying them to Christianity and theology as the science of God. The views of Karl Popper on the notion of a hypothesis are seen to offer possibilities for attaining the scientific character of ethical statements

The definitive version was published in Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry 277 (2008): 253-259, doi:10.1007/s10967-008-0739-y.7Be is a cosmogenic isotope produced in the stratosphere and troposphere. 7Be has a half-life of 53.4 days and decays to 7Li emitting a 477 keV gamma line with a branching ratio of 0.104. It is predominantly washed out of the atmosphere through wet deposition. It is a tool for oceanographers to study air sea interaction and water mass mixing. Beryllium’s largely non-reactive nature in the open ocean makes it an excellent conservative tracer. Its conservative nature and extreme dilution in seawater also makes it difficult to concentrate and analyze. Early experiments at WHOI with Fe(OH)3 cartridges to directly collect 7Be by insitu underwater pumps proved ineffective. Collection efficiencies of the cartridges were too low to be consistently useful. At sea chemistry of whole water samples became the method of choice. The use of stable 9Be as a yield monitor further improved the accuracy of the procedure. The method was optimized at WHOI in 2005 using a seawater line that enters WHOI’s coastal research lab. The procedure was then used on an oceanographic cruise on the R/V Oceanus out of Bermuda in the oligotrophic Sargasso Sea.The authors would like to thank DOE, ONR and NSF for funding of this research

    DEVELOPMENT OF A FAST MICRON-RESOLUTION BEAM POSITION MONITOR SIGNAL PROCESSOR FOR LINEAR COLLIDER BEAMBASED FEEDBACK SYSTEMS

    We present the design of a prototype fast beam position monitor (BPM) signal processor for use in inter-bunch beam-based feedbacks for linear colliders and electron linacs. We describe the FONT4 intra-train beam-based digital position feedback system prototype deployed at the Accelerator test facility (ATF) extraction line at KEK, Japan. The system incorporates a fast analogue beam position monitor front-end signal processor, a digital feedback board, and a fast kicker-driver amplifier. The total feedback system latency is less than 150ns, of which less than 10ns is used for the BPM processor. We report preliminary results of beam tests using electron bunches separated by c. 150ns. Position resolution of order 1 micron was obtained

    The GigaBit Transceiver (GBT) architecture and transmission protocol has been proposed for data transmission in the physics experiments of the future upgrade of the LHC accelerator, the SLHC. Due to the high beam luminosity planned for the SLHC, the experiments will require high data rate links and electronic components capable of sustaining high radiation doses. The GBT ASICs address this issue implementing a radiation-hard bi-directional 4.8 Gb/s optical fibre link between the counting room and the experiments. The paper describes in detail the GBT-SERDES architecture and presents an overview of the various components that constitute the GBT chipset
